Issue 16 - Friday 13 January 2023

Dear Families

I hope this finds you well on these wet and windy days!

We are very pleased to be launching our anti-racism survey for staff and pupils from Monday 16th January.  This survey is created and administered by Flair, an organisation that has developed an advanced system to gather and interpret data that helps schools and businesses identify areas for development and drive forward racial equity.

The survey will be open for two weeks to give our pupils more time to complete the survey.  Many pupils will be able to do this completely independently and some will need support. For those that require support we have organised a day where trained staff will be available to assist them, without changing the nature of the survey questions or the pupils answers. The survey is anonymous and the assisting staff will not be recording the pupils they support or passing on any information to the school.

In February, our two Anti Racism champions will be looking at the information from the survey and creating an action plan for the following 12 months.  We will share this with you so you know about the important work that is going on within school.

Ms Caddell and our Faculty Leaders are currently undertaking the important job of 'decolonising the curriculum'. This means they are identifying, acknowledging and challenging the ways in which colonialism has impacted upon perceived knowledge and learning. Additionally, they are working to diversify our resources to ensure our curriculum is inclusive and supportive of all our pupils.

Across the school, staff and pupils are continuing to work together to learn about and understand the Rights of the Child. The week beginning the 30th of January we have a Rights Respecting School focus and tutor groups will be creating their 'class charter'. We look forward to sharing these with you once they are completed.

Race In The School Community Survey

Dear Parents/carers,

In the coming days, all students and staff will receive an email invite to take part in an anonymous ‘Race In The School Community’ survey, run by an external company called FLAIR.

The questions will provide an opportunity for students and staff to reflect on their views and experiences related to race while at school. The responses will give us a better idea of student and staff experiences and help us to understand in which areas we can improve. The findings from this research will also help guide our policy decisions.

The survey is anonymous and names are not attached to the responses, so we have no way of knowing who completed it. To guarantee that participants remain anonymous, a confidentiality threshold of 5 has been set. It is very important to us that our students and staff are completely honest.

The survey only takes 10 minutes to complete.

What happens next?

On Monday 16th January, students and staff will receive an email link to complete the survey. The survey is best filled in on a laptop/PC. The survey will remain open for 2 weeks.

Once results are in, we will share key findings so you can see how we are doing. Action planning will then begin shortly after. At each stage, we will share our progress with you.

Thank you for playing your part in our efforts to continually improve our culture. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Many thanks

Ms Newman and Miss Sojka
