Issue 23 - Friday 10 March 2023

Dear Families

This week we have explored International Women's Day in assemblies. This provided a great opportunity to talk about protected characteristics again, especially gender.  We looked at equality: what it means, what it looks like and what inequality looks like. Pupils took part in a hands up quiz which helped them learn about where gender inequality still exists. I think we were all shocked to learn that there are 18 countries in the world where husbands can legally stop their wife from working and, worryingly, statistics still show that girls across the world are still far less likely to attend school than boys which impacts on their life and employment choices.  I was very pleased that some pupils in my assembly were able to tell me about the UN Convention for the Rights of the Child number 28 'I have the right to an education'.

I think the words of Malala Yousafzai are inspiring and capture what we are teaching to pupils perfectly, "we cannot all succeed when half of us are held back"

We feel that our focus on children's rights is having a positive impact with pupils and staff. If you would like to learn more about this please see the poster below or visit https://www.unicef.org.uk/what-we-do/un-convention-child-rights/  or  https://www.unicef.org.uk/rights-respecting-schools/

Once again, we are preparing for planned strike action by the NEU teachers union on Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th March. Our arrangements have not changed, except for those pupils who are attending our residential trip to Devon next week. You will receive a questionnaire on Monday where you can identify if you are able to make safe alternative arrangements for your child or whether you need a place for them in school on these days. Should the Government and Unions come to an agreement prior to next Wednesday we will send out communications to let you know if school is open as normal.

I wish you all a warm and dry weekend!

Headteacher

PRIME DRINKS

Please can we request that pupils do not bring Prime drinks to school.   They are a fashionable drink, but are not allowed in school for a number of reasons.

Thank you.
