Issue 24 - Friday 15 March 2024

Dear Families

It was lovely to see many of you at this week's Parent / Teacher meeting. Just over half the pupils were represented at the evening with an overall total of 50.6%. Thank you for your understanding where we had teacher absences. If you were not able to speak to a particular teacher you can:

  • Call Reception and leave a message for the teacher you would like to speak to, and they will get back to you
  • Write a message in your child's link book
  • Email the staff member directly

Assembly

This week we learned about Comic Relief and Red Nose Day. How it started and what the donations are used for. Pupils showed a huge amount of empathy and understanding of why some individuals, families and regions might face challenges that required more support and were excited to participate in our own Red Nose Day.

Thank you to everyone who made or donated cakes for our bake sale today. Not only did the treats brighten up everyone's Friday, the money raised will all be donated to Comic Relief.

In case you needed a boost this weekend, here is a joke shared by one of our Year 14 pupils:

Why did the chicken cross the playground?

To get to the other slide!

Happy weekend!

Headteacher

Today is Comic Relief Red Nose Day !

Pupils and staff had a non uniform day today and dressed in red.  We had a cake sale and some pupils sold red noses around school.   We raised some money for Red Nose Day.

If you would like to make a voluntary donation to Red Nose Day / Comic Relief you can do this directly on their website or via your Parent Pay account.

Update From Your School Governors

In School Visit

We would like to thank staff and pupils for welcoming us to the latest "Governors In School Day".  These are days when governors visit school to discuss initiatives, observe the operation of Meadow and meet teachers, TAs and students.

Activities included looking around the school site, learning about our diversity and inclusion initiative, our new safeguarding incident recording system, signalong, vocational pathways and our Year 14 and other leavers, curriculum development, evidence for learning and initiatives to improve attendance.  There was also a fantastic pupil forum, where we discussed what was good at school and what can be improved, with a group of our students.

Parent Governor Vacancy

If you would like to be involved with our next visit, support and challenge the school, now's your chance!  We have a vacancy for a governor who is a parent or carer of a Meadow pupil.  Applications close at noon on Monday 25th March 2024.

Emails with details or what being a parent governor involves and how to apply have been sent out, but if you haven't received one please contact the school office.  If you're thinking of taking the opportunity but aren't sure, let the office know, and they can arrange a chat with a current governor to answer any questions.

Kind regards
School Governors

Dear parents / carers,

I hope that you find the booklet informative.

Classlist - Our Online Community for Parents and Carers

Friends of Meadow, our parent/carer and teacher association uses Classlist to run an online community for the carers and parents of Meadow pupils.

It's a "closed" community, not publicly visible, where parents and carers can ask questions and share information related to their children and the school with other parents and carers - it's not a way of communicating with school.

If you'd like to sign up and join us, you can do so at classlist.com, click on "Find Your School" and you should be able to track us down.

See you there!

Secretary, Friends of Meadow

WORLD BOOK DAY Week
4th – 8th March 2024

Celebrating Reading and National Careers Week

Exploring the World of Work

Across the school last week we celebrated World Book Day and, working with the Vocational Faculty and our Careers Team, explored ideas for life beyond Meadow.  Key providers kindly gave up time to come and meet our students, running talks and workshops to explain the skills and knowledge needed for different career paths.  The students had a great deal of fun and staff enjoyed seeing them so engaged in the different work-related activities, enthusiastically sharing thoughts about their future goals.

Green Corridor
https://www.greencorridor.org.uk/

Green Corridor run a range of Horticulture, Catering and Personal Employability programmes; the level of the learner will determine their core aim and their group. Courses are offered at Entry Level,  Level 1 and 2; the curriculum is individualised and depending on the learner they teach skills needed for either Horticulture or Catering.  Our Year 9s and Year 10s had the opportunity to meet the team and practise some horticulture skills.

ISG took a break from the hard work of constructing our new building to come and talk to all students in the school. They saw each Key Stage over four sessions, explaining the stages of the build and all the skills and trades that are needed to get the job done – FYI the list was huge!  Our students had lots of questions as you can imagine; they also had the opportunity to examine some of the materials the build team are using.

BUILD - https://www.buildtraining.co.uk/

BUILD is an independent training centre based in Hayes that offers learners of all ages courses and employment opportunities in construction.  We were so lucky to have a team of four skilled trainers run taster sessions in plumbing, electrical, brick laying and woodwork & tiling for our Year 8s, 9s, 10s, 11s and 12s. Students showed a really good aptitude for these trades, if ISG get stuck, we can definitely offer support!

Marriott Hotel Project Search https://www.meadowhighschool.org/_site/data/files/pupils/E318A14417B3661DB7A2459884EE0160.pdf

Ex-students Brian and Michael returned to school to talk about the jobs they do at the Marriott in the Hospitality and Maintenance Departments.  They have both worked hard and shown a great deal of resilience to build very successful careers through this project. The students in Years 11 and 12 were interested in finding out the transferrable skills and knowledge they could gain through this project. A huge thank you to Brian and Michael for passing on such valuable advice.

Please take a moment to watch this video – you will meet Brian and Michael but also gain a clear insight into how this programme supports students into the world of work.

Planetarium Domes  - thanks to a collaboration with the Humanities and Technology Faculties, we were able to offer a fabulous opportunity to explore our world and travel into space.  The students really enjoyed this method of learning because they had full permission to lie on the floor and let the learning quite literally wash over them

Pathway 1 - Class IM

In Theme, Class IM has been learning about looking after animals. On Wednesday the 13th of March, Miss Weldon brought her bearded dragon in. The pupils had the opportunity to ask questions as well as touch and feed him. Everyone enjoyed the animal visit and became a little bit braver!
