Issue 18 - Friday 26 January 2024

Dear Families

As we are in the new year, I thought this would be a good time to update you on the progress of our development projects.

Royal Lane Replacement Block

We are currently on track for this to open during the Autumn term next year. This block will house additional Science and Food Technology rooms as well as a bespoke Intervention space (no more log cabins!). The replacement block will mostly house tutor groups from Years 10 and 11 with some 6th form spaces as well.  Our fitness room will move into the replacement block, as will the 6th Form common room, giving us more vocational space in the 6th Form block.

Northwood Road

Planning permission for the updated design has been granted by Hillingdon Council and the plans have now gone to The Mayor of London's Office for final approval.  As soon as this is received, the demolition of the old boarding block at Harefield Academy will commence. We are currently projected to take possession of Northwood Road in Autumn 2025.

Community Cafe

Work to remodel our 6th Form hall and a classroom into a community cafe and kitchen will start this year.  This facility will enable pupils to gain more employability and independence skills. We look forward to welcoming the local community, local elderly care residents and families to the Cafe once it is opened.

We are very proud of how well the pupils have adapted to the changes on site, including the different arrangements for our fire and evacuation muster.

Assembly

This week we learned about Holocaust Memorial Day, which is held every year on the 27th of January. This is a very important but challenging topic for pupils to learn about, and I was very impressed at how all pupils conducted themselves.  A large number of pupils remained behind at the end of assembly to ask further questions or to express their views in an extremely mature manner.  Some pupils also wanted to share and explore their families' personal experience of genocide, and they will be able to explore this further and be supported by their class teams.

Very best wishes for the weekend.

Mrs J Rigby
Headteacher

WORLD BOOK DAY Week
4th – 8th March 2024

Celebrating Reading and National Careers Week
Exploring the World of Work

We are always plotting and planning ways to make learning engaging and fun. We just wanted to give you a quick ‘heads-up’ about World Book Day this year to help you with your planning!

This year we are teaming up with the Vocational Faculty to celebrate National Careers Week, focusing on the World of Work. We also have a lovely cross-curricular learning opportunity for students to enjoy, organised by the Humanities and Science Faculties – this will stay a surprise for now!  We will be letting you know more nearer the time.  However, we wanted you to know about three important things in advance:

  1. World Book Day Book Tokens. Thanks to our fabulous librarian, Miss Gaafar, we have got this all in hand. Finding bookshops these days is not as easy as it was. Therefore, we shared the World Book Day choices with our students before Christmas and have already got their orders placed with one of our helpful suppliers. We will be giving the books out in our special assembly on World Book Day.

  2. World Book Day – we are celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 7th March 2024. The theme this year is the World of Work. If they would like to, students can come dressed as a job they would love to do or come as a character from a book, thinking about what job they do. Staff will be dressing up too. We are going to have fun thinking about the job we dreamed of doing when we were younger (for some of us this was a while ago!) or the job we would have done if we didn’t work in education. We hope as many students as possible join in, it always makes the day even more fun!

  3. Scholastic Book Fair – we are very excited to announce our first ever Scholastic Book Fair in the week before World Book Week (25th February – 1st March 2024).  We will be inviting students to help choose some books for their new class reading corner; we will also be inviting parents/carers into school to come and shop with their child (further details to follow). Scholastic offers a wide range of books at very competitive prices. Even better news is that we will receive a percentage of the price paid in Scholastic rewards which we can then use towards future investment in reading in our school.

by Rachel Bright & Jim Field

read and signed by Mrs. Sugden.

Ever felt that you are a bit invisible?  That you are not being listened to because of your age or your size?

In that case, you might enjoy this story about a little mouse who is on a journey to find his voice... after all, the size of your courage is not linked to your size or age is it?!

My Hero Academia
by Anri Yoshi

read by Miss Gaafar.

The U.A. High School hero course teaches young hopefuls everything they need to become heroes. From events like the sports festival and internships that challenge and build their skills to parent’s day where they get to show what they are made of!

Midoriya inherits the superpower of the world’s greatest hero, but greatness won’t come easy.

Salary information: L12 - L16; £65,629 - £72,144 per annum (dependent upon experience)

To support the Local Authority we are expanding further with two new development projects. The first is a replacement block where our remaining temporary classrooms are situated. Once this is opened in September 2024 we will gradually expand to have around 300 pupils on the 'Royal Lane' site. The next project is a Satellite Unit based in Harefield village, called 'Northwood Road'. This will house up to 90 Pathway 1 pupils and should be ready for us to occupy in Autumn 2025.

Other in house developments include: the construction of a Community Cafe and its supporting kitchen; the expansion and refurbishment of our Life and Living Skills house and garden; the development of a forest school area, expanded horticulture area, outdoor classroom and outdoor gym. As you can see, things rarely stand still here.

The Governing Body is looking to appoint an inspirational and energetic Assistant Headteacher to work alongside our Deputy Headteacher and Headteacher, leading the school through its new developments.

What we want from our candidate:

  • An outstanding existing middle leader seeking progression, or an existing Assistant Headteacher seeking a new challenge.
  • A talented and influential leader, committed to maintaining a culture dedicated to continuous improvement, and to our values and aims.
