“You’ve Got A Friend In Me” Toy Story

Aims:  These tasks are designed to be done with your child. Purple coloured tasks are aimed at pupils who would enjoy more of a challenge .  These are tasks where pupils should be working with greater independence, however  please take time to support pupils in starting the tasks and build communication skills.

Thinking

Literacy Focus

Planning a structured narrative; using descriptive language.

Key Terms to have a go at  learning:  Focus on this section first.

noun = naming words eg chair, cat, dog

verb = doing word eg the boy crept along the corridor

adjective = describing word eg the corridor was dark and spooky.

adverb = tells you more about the verb eg the boy crept quietly.

Punctuation = .   ,   ?   !   ‘

. = full stop used at the end of a sentence

, = comma used for listing in a sentence eg She bought jam, butter and bread.

? = question mark  eg How much?

! = exclamation mark when you are saying something more loudly eg excited, shocked

isn’t  = apostrophe used when we shorten a word eg isn’t - is not or I am - I’m

tense = when something happened, past - ran, present - run(s) or will happen in the future - will run.

Higher Challenge:  Top Tip: Learn by linking them to the BBC Bitesize Karate Cat work – repeat trickier levels several times.

REMEMBER: Don’t try to learn them all this week, this work is over a long time!

Jane’s bag = possessive apostrophe shows something belongs to a person/thing.

tense = [see above] past progressive or future progressive = shows an action in progress eg. was running or  will be running

And finally...  Types of sentence

[See the final slide on this week’s powerpoint.]

Speaking & Communication/Reading & Writing:

Resources:  You will need to dust off your Toy Story film knowledge.  This week is a chance to rewatch and enjoy these fabulous characters from your childhood.

[If you don’t have these films then you can still complete most of the tasks by thinking about favourite stories from books, films or games that are about toys / friendship.]

Fiction: Re-watch the first Toy Story film.

First:  If you can find your favourite toys from now or in the past to put beside you while you watch, get really comfortable and enjoy, you are genuinely doing your English work if anyone asks!

Next: Put the Hero’s Journey into the correct order [see W2 Toy Story purple as powerpoint]. This activity relates to the first Toy Story film, the hero is Woody. Answer the questions about Woody’s journey.

[You can either print this sheet out or use your workbook to make notes in.]

ThenFollow the film-guide-toy-story-4.pptx  powerpoint

Discuss and then write answers to questions relating to the trailer clip in your workbook.

FinallyWatch the short non-fiction [news] video clips about children who lost their favourite toy. Question:  Look at your toys, why were these so important to you? Did you have a special soft toy when you were younger? News Report True-Life Story The Lost Bear …

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ugRt1Z1jLk

New Report - Lost Toy Giraffe - happy tears!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5D5MAbAEQE8

Ready to get working again?
Good!  Time to get creative!

First:   Get creative, make a toy to use as the hero in the new story you are going to write.  You can use anything you find at home [see W2 Toy Story purple as powerpoint to get some ideas to start you off.]

NextCreate a quick character profile for your new toy.  Focus on his/her/its backstory ie who made them when and personality ie kind hearted, energetic, gullible...

Then: Use the blank story map [on the same powerpoint] to plan your story.

Finally: Write a short adventure story with your new toy as the hero.

Focus:  Use your planning and the skills you’ve built using the link below.

Core Skills Work:  Grammar, Spelling & Punctuation Practise. The first few karate belts are good practise, then they get harder.  Only go as far as you feel comfortable. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zd63xyc/articles/zdp4pg8
