Dear Parents and Carers
A busy first half term has drawn to a close this week and there has still been so much going on. It was wonderful to see how many students and staff took their entitlement to a day off on Monday to celebrate Diwali. It is important as an inclusive, multi cultural school that we acknowledge and share in the important festivals of our peers.
Another important aspect of community is working to support those less fortunate than ourselves. We will be doing this when we return after the break. We are supporting a charity, Wrap up London, who provide warm winter coats for people across London. We will be collecting coats in school between the 3rd and 7th November so if you have any old coats you no longer need please bring them to reception between these dates.
I would like to share with you some excellent news about our school that I received this week. The national attendance figure for State Special Schools is 87.5%. At Meadow the attendance of our young people is currently sitting at 92%. This is excellent and is down to the hard work of the staff as well as your support as parents in sending your children in school. It is also down to the young people themselves who must clearly want to be here everyday. Excellent attendance has a direct link to academic success and having control and choice over your future. By attending regularly our young people are putting themselves in a great position to maximise their future.
This week we have also had the opportunity to visit the new site at Northwood Road where work is progressing at pace. The steel frames are now going up and these will hopefully be completed by the middle of November, ready for the concrete to be poured and the concrete roof slab to be fitted. We will continue to engage with all the relevant parties on a fortnightly basis as the project unfolds.

It has also been a pleasure to meet many of you this week in my final two coffee mornings. It has been great to hear all of your positive experiences and views of Meadow as well as reflecting on how we can continue to work closely with you to improve the education provision we offer to your child. The main message I have heard is about how we communicate with you around your child’s education and keep you informed about their educational journey. A second point is about the importance of independent learning away from the classroom and this is something we will continue to look at as we evolve our curriculum over the course of this year.
Finally for this edition of the newsletter I would like to extend my thanks to you for making me feel so welcome in my first half term at Meadow High School. I feel I have developed a really good understanding of the school in these first few weeks and you have been an important part of this.
I wish you all an enjoyable half term break and I look forward to continuing to work with you when we return in November.
Kind regards
Mr Cunningham

Kaity Piper & Variety Club Visit Meadow High School
To Make a Film
On Tuesday 14th October Katie Piper, alongside Laurence Guinness CEO of the Variety Club, visited Meadow High School to speak to some of our students about the impact the Variety Club sponsored minibuses have on our curriculum and the day to day life at Meadow High School. The students had the opportunity to take part in the filming of a promotional video to encourage the sponsorship of further coaches for special educational needs schools. The final video was shown at the Variety Club Show Business Awards on Sunday evening, which Katie Piper hosted. She spoke very warmly about her day with the students and the video was reported to be a highlight of the evening.
|
|
|
The students represented themselves and Meadow High School extremely well and the link below is the final product of the video. Well done to Amiya, Vinaay, Sam, Diego, Kaniz, Sanjana, Raanya and Raheem who all took a starring role in the recording of the video.
It was a pleasure to host Katie and Laurence to the school and we look forward to working with The Variety Club again in the future.

Meadow High School Hello Youtube Channel
– Lots of Stories to enjoy!
|

Extended Learning: Engaging with a range of stories provides lots of learning opportunities. Please remember that we have our own youtube channel where you’ll find a wide of stories to enjoy. Listening to stories can help boost reading and language skills;
- spark your imagination and stimulate curiosity
- help your brain, social skills and communication skills develop
- help learn new words as you read. Subconsciously, you will absorb information on how to structure sentences and how to use words and other language features effectively
- help with develop understanding of how to read, modelling pacing, proper intonation (using voice for expression) and correct pronunciation whilst immersing children in stories
- help develop comprehension skills – a crucial part of reading
- help inspire a love of books and reading – a life-long learning tool
We will be posting two new stories on Saturday 1st November. The stories this month are

The House At Pooh Corner
by A. A. Milne
read by Mr. Cunningham
Books hold special memories. We enjoy reading them again and again. This is one of Mr. Cunningham’s favourite books. It is the story of Winnie-the-Pooh, a special teddy bear given to Christopher Robin on his birthday. Along with his other animal toys, they go on many adventures. This one is on a very snowy day...

History Corner:
Remembrance Day
by Kay Barnham
read by Mr. Goodbody
Have you ever wondered what Remembrance Day is all about or why we hold a 2 minute silence in November? Or maybe you just enjoy history, exploring information about the past. If that sounds like you, I think Mr. Goodbody has found the perfect book in our school library. Watch and listen as he explains all you need to know.

Boomerang Club Meet Up
Wednesday 22 October
Yesterday we held our Halloween Boomerang meet.
Once again it was lovely to see some of our ex students return and share their life experiences with us.

The ex students shared that they are enjoying a variety of different college courses, some have formed new friendships and one ex student has passed his driving test !
They also shared that college is very different to Meadow High School , they miss Meadow and they enjoy our Boomerang meetups.
We look forward to our next Boomerang meet up in February.

Wrap Up London
Let’s spread some Meadow High school warmth around London this Winter
Getting your winter wardrobe ready? Does your warm coat need a new home? Have your kids grown out of their winter coat?
After half-term, I will be collecting warm coats to donate to Wrap up London.
If you would like to donate, please drop your coat to School Reception
Between Monday 3rd - Friday 7th November
WrapUp London is our annual winter coat campaign. Every November, thousands of Londoners give their time to donate, sort and distribute coats to help people in need keep warm over the winter.
In 2024, WrapUp London saw over 15,000 warm coats collected. Among their beneficiaries were over 90 front line charities, including homelessness organisations, women’s refuges, and family centres. Now entering its 15th year, WrapUp London has become one of the largest winter volunteering events in the city: a celebration of what can be achieved when people combine their collective efforts to do good.
The number of those living in crisis in the city is rising, and the winter months are often the most challenging for people already enduring homelessness and poverty.
A person’s spare coat and another’s spare time can not only help keep a person warm, it can keep them alive.
Thank you in advance for your support !
Keri
