Issue 33 - Friday 9 June 2023

Dear Families

I hope this finds you well and enjoying the beautiful weather! As always at this time of year, we encourage you to apply sunscreen to your child in the morning, or supply them with sunscreen for them to apply during the day. Additionally, we recommend a hat and sunglasses for pupils when they are outside, particularly hay fever sufferers, as this can help reduce pollen entering the eyes and nose. Finally, please ensure your child has a water bottle which they can top up here during the day to stay well hydrated.

It has been wonderful to see our pupils participating in their sports days this week. If you were able to make it along to the school, I hope you enjoyed cheering on all the children!

Royal Lane and Northwood Road update

We have now been informed that both projects are running behind schedule.

At present, we know that the Royal Lane development will start on the first day of the summer holidays, and we believe that it should be handed over to us by Christmas 2024.

Northwood Road has experienced various complications and the updated timeline now looks at the site being ready around March 2025. Northwood Road is also likely to undergo a significant redesign due to technical issues that have been encountered. Obviously, once we have some new visuals for this we will share them with you.

Very best wishes to you all for a lovely weekend in the 28 degree heat!

Pupil Safeguarding

Dear Parent / Carer

We would like to advise you that should a child make any disclosure to our trained staff we would always seek to investigate and resolve this at the lowest possible level, but that advice may need to be sought from the London Borough of Hillingdon Social Services Department. We hope that this would only be necessary on very rare occasions. However, this would always be in the best interest of the child, under our duty of care and in line with our safeguarding guidelines. For more information please refer to our Child Protection/Safeguarding Policy on our Statutory Policies page.

We would like to reassure all parents and carers that the school will always deal with any child protection issue as a matter of the utmost priority. We also hope that any parents or carers with child protection concerns would feel able to contact the school to seek advice from our designated child protection officers.

Vapes

Meadow High School, like many other schools, has seen a recent spike in young people vaping.

E-cigarettes, or ‘apes’, are not safe for young people. They come in many shapes and sizes and can be hard to spot, as they can look like everyday items including highlighters, pens or USB memory sticks. In order to protect the health of our students I need you to be aware of what these vape pens look like. If you find your child with a vape, first get them help to stop using them, but also make sure they are not bringing them to school!

Here are some common examples of what they look like (but there are many other types available!)

{alt_tag}

Key Vaping Facts

  • Many vapes contain nicotine. Nicotine can cause long-lasting negative effects on a young person's brain development (including impaired learning ability and altered mood), and can increase the risk of depression and anxiety.  Some vapes that claim to be nicotine free have been found to contain as much nicotine as 240 cigarettes.

  • Vapes can contain the same harmful chemicals which can lead to serious lung diseases. They can also contain high levels of lead.

  • Young people who vape may be more likely to take up smoking cigarettes.

The laws around selling vapes

It is illegal to sell vapes to anyone under the age of 18 years. Young people often purchase vapes online, from retail stores, or from friends and contacts on social media. You can report suspected illegal selling of vapes to:

https://www.londontradingstandards.org.uk/projects/underage-sales/

Talk to your child about vaping

It’s important to take the time to talk to your child about the risks of vaping. Try to start the conversation in a relaxed, easy-going way, and remember your goal is to have a conversation, not deliver a lecture. Importantly, get the facts at:

https://www.healthforteens.co.uk/lifestyle/e-cigarettes/e-cigarettes-just-the-facts/

What are our rules about vaping?

Pupils are not allowed to have vapes on site.

If we suspect or find a vape, it will be removed and a parent or carer will need to collect it from school. We will not hand it back to your child at the end of the day.

If a pupil is seen vaping anywhere on the school grounds, they will be externally suspended for a minimum of one day (this will be more for repeat offences). A parent or carer will need to come into school for a reintegration meeting before their child can return to school.

Assistant Head, Year 9, 10 & 11

Diversity Week
Chances To Get Involved!

We'd love carers and parents to help and share their culture and identity during Diversity Week at Meadow in June.  If you can contribute in any of the following areas please drop an email to Miss Kepinska  ckepinska@meadowhighschool.org

Clothing:  Do you have any clothes related to your culture which we could borrow?  Maybe a sari, a kebaya or a kilt.  Nothing too precious as we can't guarantee items won't get damaged in school.

Chilling with Mindfulness and Mandala Colouring:  On Tuesday, probably at lunchtime, there will be a relaxing session where you can help with students and staff.  Colouring, reading, mindfulness will all be taking place.

Stall Activities:  Are you a henna artist?  Do you play the sitar or bagpipes or  do Irish dancing?  We're looking for carers and parents who can display their culture and diversity in some form on a stall on the Friday afternoon.  It doesn't have to be one of the suggestions above, let us know what you can offer.

Thanks to everyone who's able to add to the fun of our celebration of diversity!

Mr J Goodbody                                            Miss C Kepinska
Parent / Governor                                      Faculty Leader, Arts

Friends of Meadow
Annual General Meeting (AGM)

We would like to invite you to our Annual General Meeting, which will be held on Monday 26th June 2023 at 09.50am, at school.

The PTA plays a vital part in the school community and all parents/carers are invited to support the AGM.  This is your chance to hear how the funds you have helped to raise have been used for the benefit of the pupils at our school.  The Treasurer will give a financial report and we will be electing officers for our 2023/24 Committee.

We look forward to welcoming any new faces to the committee who can help us with the ongoing success of this committee. It is also an opportunity for you to find out about what goes on behind the scenes to organise and raise money to support the school and chat about ideas for the upcoming year.

Please let reception know if you are planning on coming, so we have an idea of numbers 01895 443310.  Thank you.
