Issue 19 - Friday 3 February 2023

Dear Families

Thank you for your support on Wednesday.  We sincerely hope that the teachers unions and the Government are able to come to an agreement prior to any further industrial action.  However, if this does not appear to be the case we will be reviewing our strike day arrangements and sending out another form after half-term to find out which pupils require a space in school.

I hope you have been able to access the new stories on our YouTube channel, meadow high school hello. Our wonderful librarian, Miss Gaarfar, and our brilliant Faculty Leader for English, Mrs Sugden, have recorded some lovely book readings. 'Breakfast Club Adventures' and 'The Very Cranky Bear' are two new additions to the stories already available for your child to enjoy. Please look out for new stories which we will let you know about via our Twitter @MeadowHighSch

The last piece of equipment was installed around the school field this week!  We now have a trim trail, an accessible adventure mound and slide, a shelter with seating, outdoor gym equipment, a street workout set (like you see in local parks), a log stack, a sit up bench and an aerial runway.  We are delighted to see pupils being able to enjoy this equipment at unstructured times, as part of their PE lessons and to help them self regulate.  We are assessing the remaining space and liaising with pupils to identify some more potential installations that will encourage activity and social communication for every pupil.  If your child will eventually be moving to Northwood Road, we have allocated money to ensure we can supplement the outdoor provision being provided by the Local Authority, making the facilities just as good, if not better than at Royal Lane!

Very best wishes to you all.

Mrs J Rigby
Headteacher

Library Update
We’re open again!

Thanks to the hard work of our librarian, Miss Gaafar, and our amazing team of staff, students and parents, we are ready to reopen the library, as planned, on Monday 6th February.

A huge thank you is due to one of our governors, Mr. Goodbody, and his team of parents for giving up their time last Friday to help.  We are all very grateful and hope that you enjoyed having a look at some of the lovely new books we have purchased. We would also like to give a special mention to our Work Experience students - we couldn’t have done it without you!

Your child will now have a regular weekly time slot to visit the library with their form group.  They will have the opportunity to borrow two books which they read during individual reading time in registration each morning, and can take home to continue to practise their skills. We recommend they take one book within their reading ability to reinforce key skills developed during their Reading Intervention lessons and one book in their interest range to share with someone else to support engagement, build comprehension skills and develop language.  The library will also be open during break and lunchtimes, and they are welcome to visit at any time.  Many of our students have started to do this already as it provides an enriching and calm space in a busy school day.

We are still adding new books, however, if you would like to see the books we have available so far and talk to your child about books they might like to borrow, please click on this link https://meadowhighschool.oliverasp.co.uk/library/junior.do.   Please note, we will be using a simple ‘film rating’ based system to ensure your child is only able to borrow books that are suitable for them. Miss Gaafar will be working closely with the Form Tutors, please address any concerns to them in the usual way.
