REMINDER FOR NEXT WEEK

SCHOOL FINISHES ON

FRIDAY 16 DECEMBER 2022 AT 2PM

Dear Families,

I hope that those of you whose children took part in our Christmas shopping event this week enjoy your presents when they are given to you! Thank you to our Friends of Meadow for organising this fun event where pupils can plan, choose and use money in a friendly, supported environment. If you would like to volunteer and get involved with supporting the school, please contact the Secretary of the Friends of Meadow via our meadow@meadowhighschool.org email address.

Our older School Council members had a trip to see 'Wicked' the musical in London this week. Ms Taylor, Ms Newman and Ms Carter were impressed at how responsible the pupils were and said that they were all a real credit to themselves and the school.  You may have seen some photos on Twitter of the group enjoying the show and interval ice cream!

Pupils in Years 7 and 8 were treated to a visiting theatre company's production of A Christmas Carol. The Booster Cushion Theatre Company puts on child friendly versions of classics and, judging from the applause, laughter and atmosphere in the hall, I would say that pupils enjoyed this treat very much.

We were delighted to have the Reverend Alan Bradford join us from St. John's Hillingdon to take our whole school assembly this week. Pupils learned a new Christmas song and volunteers acted out the Christmas story.  This is the first time Reverend Alan has come to Meadow, and he was so impressed at the enthusiasm, politeness and willingness to participate of our pupils. We look forward to having more visits from him in the new year.

As we reach out to our local community, we are seeking to build good relationships with representatives from all faiths.  We look forward to having them speak with our pupils about their faith and to spread the message of tolerance and respect for all.

Threatening and abusive behaviour
Recently, we have seen an increase in some threatening and abusive behaviour from a very small group of pupils.  We are working with these pupils to educate them to develop more appropriate behaviours. However, I thought it would be an appropriate time to reshare our position on this kind of behaviour:

'Everyone at Meadow High School has the right to a safe, respectful and inclusive environment.'

At Meadow High School we have a zero tolerance policy for threatening behaviour or comments. These might be threats made directly to a person(s) or to others about a person(s). These also include threats to harm made over other forms of communication, including social media. It is not an excuse for a pupil to say they were “just joking”.  It is not an excuse to say they ‘don’t like’ that person.  It is not an excuse to say they ‘didn’t mean to do anything’. It is not an excuse to say they didn’t really understand the consequences of what they were saying. We also have a zero tolerance policy for pupils who say they have a weapon in school (this applies whether or not a weapon is found).

Making any threat to harm or intimidate is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Pupils need to learn that the comments they make have consequences. It is not acceptable for any pupils or member of staff to be threatened, either directly or indirectly.

It is important for pupils to learn that threatening behaviour will result in consequences in school, just as they would if made in the community. Serious incidents will be reported to our Safer School Police Officer. Parents/Carers and pupils should be aware that any member of the school community may also wish to make their own report to the police.'

We ask that families reinforce this message at home, and we thank you in advance for your support and cooperation.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

On a more positive note

I would like to thank the vast majority of our pupils for their kind, tolerant and respectful behaviour towards everyone in our community. You make our school the wonderful place that it is, and you should be proud of yourselves for being such excellent citizens and role models.

May I wish you all a very safe and happy weekend.

Library Update

Exciting News and Next Step Plans!

Staff have been working very hard to help get our library ready to reopen after a few challenges created during Phase 2 of the build. There was a great deal to do, but many hands certainly lightened the load – a huge thank you to all for their help!

We are delighted to report that the library was organised and tidied, the carpet and furnishings professionally cleaned and the Christmas tree hung with lights and decorations so that we were ready, not for Santa (though we hope he pops by as we have been very good), but for our new librarian, Miss Gaafar!

We are delighted to welcome Miss Gaafar to the team.  She has previously worked for the London Borough of Hillingdon Library Service and therefore brings a great deal of experience and huge amounts of enthusiasm to her new role. Miss Gaafar has been meeting the students this week, familiarising herself with the library and formulating a plan to ensure the library opens as soon as possible.

Our students are an important part of this process as it is their library after all. They will be helping us to sort the books, give them a final clean and then re-stock the shelves.  We will also be asking for their help in choosing new books to replace those that didn’t quite make it through the move process.

Can you help?  We really want to ensure our library is an exciting and inspiring place for our students to learn more about themselves and the world around them.  If you have time to help by going with your child to your local library or book shop to get ideas for books or can support them to look online, that would be amazing! [All suggestions to Form Tutors who will share these with Miss Gaafar.]

Future Plans:

The library will form an important learning zone right in the heart of the school.  As well as buying new books to ensure our library reflects and respects our diverse school community, we will be replacing existing shelving to for accessibility and commissioning bespoke, built-in cupboards to maximise storage capacity and create space for a study zone. Finally, there will be new seating and our reading corner will be returning, providing a lovely space for sharing stories and exploring ‘new reads’. We will also look forward to welcoming back Work Experience students as a library provides fabulous opportunities for learning transferrable skills to support our students’ future aspirations.

Thank you so much for your patience, we will keep you updated as we go.

Strep A  & Scarlet Fever Advice

Extracted from Government Guidance

Information to share with parents if child is displaying signs or symptoms of a sore throat. “As a parent, if you feel that your child seems seriously unwell, you should trust your own judgement. Contact NHS 111 or your GP if:

  • your child is getting worse
  • your child is feeding or eating much less than normal
  • your child has had a dry nappy for 12 hours or more or shows other signs of dehydration
  • your baby is under 3 months and has a temperature of 38°C, or is older
  • than 3 months and has a temperature of 39°C or higher
  • your baby feels hotter than usual when you touch their back or chest, or
  • feels sweaty
  • your child is very tired or irritable

Call 999 or go to A&E if:

  • your child is having difficulty breathing – you may notice grunting noises or
  • their tummy sucking under their ribs
  • there are pauses when your child breathes
  • your child’s skin, tongue or lips are blue
  • your child is floppy and will not wake up or stay awake

Good hand and respiratory hygiene are important for stopping the spread of many bugs. By teaching your child how to wash their hands properly with soap for 20 seconds, using a tissue to catch coughs and sneezes, and keeping away from others when feeling unwell, they will be able to reduce the risk of picking up or spreading infections.”

If there are any signs of symptoms of a skin rash the advice is to see a GP especially if it is sandpapery to touch.

Scarlet fever is usually a mild illness, but it is highly infectious. Therefore,
look out for symptoms in your child, which include a sore throat, headache,
and fever, along with a fine, pinkish or red body rash with a sandpapery feel.
On darker skin, the rash can be more difficult to detect visually but will have a
sandpapery feel. Contact NHS 111 or your GP if you suspect your child has
scarlet fever, because early treatment of scarlet fever with antibiotics is
important to reduce the risk of complications such as pneumonia or a
bloodstream infection. If your child has scarlet fever, keep them at home until
at least 24 hours after the start of antibiotic treatment to avoid spreading the
infection to others.

Scarlet fever is caused by bacteria called group A streptococci. These
bacteria also cause other respiratory and skin infections such as strep throat
and impetigo.   In very rare occasions, the bacteria can get into the bloodstream and cause an illness called invasive Group A strep (iGAS). “

Please note

“Currently, there is no evidence that a new strain is circulating. The increase
is most likely related to high amounts of circulating bacteria and social
mixing.”
Both Strep A and Scarlet fever are usually effectively treated with antibiotics
