Issue 22 - Friday 3 March 2023

Dear Families

It has been an eventful week in school!

Firstly, thank you to all families who were able to provide alternative arrangements for their child on the NEUs strike day. Please make a note that there are two further days planned on 15th / 16th March, but we are very hopeful that the Union and Government will reach an agreement prior to this.

Mrs Sugden and Miss Gafaar, in liaison with our Technology Department, have run a fantastic Book Week this week. I will let Mrs Sugden give you more details about it below, but I would like to tell you about some fantastic group reading I saw this week during tutor time.  Pupils were working together to read a book and were having a very mature discussion about how the characters were feeling, what they might be thinking and how this made them act.  A really insightful lesson and some important learning inspired by a book. Additionally, I was delighted to see that all the pupils in the class were actively reading and more importantly comprehending the text.

We were delighted to welcome two visitors on Wednesday from the Diversity Role Models charity.  Robert and Darius spent the day running workshops, seminars, drop in sessions and an assembly for pupils across the school.  One of the important messages to all our pupils was 'you don't have to understand someone else's gender and sexuality, but you do have to be respectful' and also 'don't tolerate unkindness and bullying in any form to any person'.

Finally, we visited Northwood Road this week with the build team and are delighted that work is now commencing on the extension and major interior refurbishment. Additionally, we met with the Royal Lane build team to discuss the dates for work on site.  We will be sharing information with families over the course of the summer term and showing you the finalised plans.

Very best wishes for a good weekend.

World Book Day Week

Back To The Future Transport

This week we have been very busy building our reading and STEM skills. As well as enjoying the films being shown in the library and reading our new transport-themed library books, we also

  • chose a FREE World Day Book
  • came up with cool designs to enter the Future Transport competition.
  • thought about how we use our reading skills in all our lessons
  • announced Class Reading Champions (to help our librarian and promote a love of reading)
  • got dressed up for World Book Day and
  • shared our week in a special assembly!

THANK YOU !

We need to say a very big ‘thank you’ to our Team Enterprise crew for making such amazing sensory bookmarks – enough for the whole school was a big order to fill!

In Science and Technology lessons, we had lots of fun completing experiments which explored different forces and carefully followed instructions to make a range of cars, all using Newton’s 3 rd Law of motion.

We tested how well we’d followed the instructions by racing the cars to find the fastest car in each class and then had whole school races on Friday afternoon.

Celebrating Our Diverse Community:
One World
– The LEX the Dragon Project

Dear Parents/Carers,

At Meadow High School we have a rich and diverse community of staff and students. As you know, we have recently invested in a wide range of new books for our library to ensure this is fully represented. One World – The LEX Project is an update on a project we ran a few years ago. Our aim is build a school community based on respect and appreciation of the opportunity to learn from each other, enabling our students to ‘achieve together’ and become productive and positive members of society.

So, the story of LEX* the dragon…

Lex the Dragon has flown into the grounds of Meadow High School and needs our help.  LEX loves to travel and has flown all around the world, learning about how people live in different countries, trying different food, listening to different sounds and languages.  LEX has enjoyed travelling so much it has changed their ideas about the world and the markings on their scales.  LEX is now covered in flags from all around the world but needs our MHS students to add the correct colours to the flags.

[*LEX – short for Lexicon – means the vocabulary of language, ours at MHS is made up of many languages, about 21 at the moment, and of course signing too!]

If you would like your child to have the opportunity to help paint Lex, complete the attached slip or email asugden@meadowhighschool.org. Please let us know if you have someone in your family who has a connection with another country.  It might be they

  • moved to live in another country
  • lived in another country for a while,
  • go on holiday to this country regularly/or a special holiday
  • moved from another country to live here.

It will be lovely to gain a picture of just what a global community we are. Last time we had connections with 44 countries – let’s see if we can beat that this time! We’re going to log all the places on a  map of the world and display it in school. We will make sure  all students who reply have the opportunity to help paint Lex,  where possible, the flag of the country they have a link to.

Finally, LEX will take their place at the front of our school.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact us.

Yours faithfully,
Mrs. Sugden,                                Ms Sojka

Keeping Pupils Safe Online

Livestreaming

Staying safe online when
broadcasting to an audience

Livestreaming is when an individual or a group of people broadcast themselves or others to an audience online in real-time. Many social media platforms offer a livestreaming feature that is available to anyone but often used by gamers, celebrities or influencers to communicate with a chosen audience. Livestreaming can be an enjoyable way to share content with followers but can also present risks around privacy and coercion as well as potential harm towards those watching.
