Weekly Bulletin - Issue 23 - Friday 4 March 2022

Issue 23 - Friday 4 March 2022

Dear Families

It has been a week of contrasts at Meadow.  Some of the points to celebrate were:

  • The school football team took part in a fantastic tournament and acquitted themselves with excellent dexterity, team spirit and fairness.

  • We had a brilliant World Book Day with many pupils and staff dressing up as book characters.

  • Our 'Crunchy Munchy' 6th form vocational group produced a delicious meal of bangers, mash, peas and homemade gravy.

  • We had a visiting ecologist who talked to us about the birds and bats we might find on the site.

  • Many 6th form pupils successfully attended college interviews and were offered places.

  • As well as the excellent work that has been going on across the curriculum around the school. Well done everyone!
Some of the challenges we faced were:
  • A pupil being knocked down outside school (thankfully, they are OK)

  • Having to involve the Police with a small group of pupils due to their disruptive behaviour and/or bullying of others.

  • Supporting many pupils who are anxious about the conflict in the Ukraine
Assembly

In this week's assembly we talked about bullying again. Bullying of individuals, groups or even countries as it is currently being seen in the Ukraine.

We used a lot of visuals, alongside a version of the explanation below, to try and help our pupils understand what is happening.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After the last big playground fight (World War 2) lots of popular kids (World Leaders) got together and made a big group (NATO).  All the kids in the group made a pinky promise (Treaty) to be nice and respectful and not fight each other anymore.

They agreed not to go into each other's part of the playground (Countries) without permission. They also promised not to fight or throw sticks or stones (Heavy artillery) at each other.

The UK is part of the group (NATO).

Then a new kid (Ukraine) came out on the playground but a big bully (Russia) started picking on the new kid. Russia was greedy and bossy and wanted the new kids playground space for himself [even though he has one of the biggest spaces in the playground].

Sadly, the new kid hadn't joined the group (NATO) because the big bad bully didn't want them to.

All the people in the group (NATO) would be breaking their pinky promise if any of them helped the new kid (Ukraine) fight the bully (Russia).

But, we have all told the bully off and stuck up for the new kid by hiding the bully's pocket money until the bully stops hurting the new kid (Sanctions) and this will hopefully stop the bully from buying more sticks and stones.

We have also supported the new kid to fight the bully, because this is not breaking the pinky promise!

Even though it is really, really sad, all we can do now is stand on the edge of the playground and watch and give moral support to the new kid, because we are not allowed to fight the bully for them, not without breaking the pinky promise.

BUT... if the bully breaks the pinky promise and comes into our part of the playground (UK) without permission and throws a stick or stone at us, then the whole of the group (NATO) will come and help us.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cake Sale

One of our Year 10 pupils was so concerned about the conflict, he has positively distracted himself by organising the whole school to have a cake sale to raise funds for charities supporting the Ukrainian refugees.  We have advised all pupils not to obsess over the news, reports and the Internet, as this is a proven way of increasing anxiety.  Instead, we have suggested some of the following distraction techniques:

If you are concerned about your child's anxiety in relation to the current conflict or any other matter, please make contact with their Form Team for support.

Very best wishes to you all for a good weekend.

World Book Day
Thursday 3rd March 2022

Pupils and Staff took part in World Book Day yesterday by dressing up as a character from a story.

There have been lots of activities to support literacy across the curriculum all week, with the theme  ‘The Future – What’s Next?’

We hope to bring you more photos in future bulletins and on the website.  Here is Teddy, one of our Therapy Dogs, in his Mickey Mouse outfit !

Therapy Reports For Annual Reviews

It has been agreed by the Local Authority SEND Team that we will not be providing Therapy reports for annual reviews as standard practice. Reports will be provided if it is to be suggested that the therapy provision be changed in any way (ie increased, decreased or ceased). Otherwise, there will be one annual report attached to the child's annual school report.

These measures are being put in place whilst we still have some vacant permanent posts that are currently being filled by Locum Therapists. This is to ensure that we maximise the time that Therapists can be working with pupils or setting up and monitoring programs.

Litter Picking: Pathway 1 Pupils

Some Pathway 1 Key Stage 4 pupils have been out litter picking in the local area as part of working towards their Duke of Edinburgh award.  The team worked incredibly hard and left the streets close to school much tidier.

Mothers' Day Sale

The students in the charity shop have worked hard on a special table dedicated to items for sale for Mothers Day. We have had some masses of donations for the shop and have picked out some lovely items that the students think are suitable for gifts for Mothers Day. These items range from face masks to candles and even handbags. Items are priced between 20p and £2 if your child would like to come and purchase anything. We are open every lunchtime and Wednesday & Thursday as part of our work experience for the 6th form students.

Also if you would like to donate anything to the shop please contact Miss Wilson at swilson@meadowhighschool.org to discuss if you have items suitable for our charity shop.

Thank you

Miss Wilson

FREE WEBINARS ABOUT EHCPs FROM
HILLINGDON PARENT / CARER FORUM

Dear Parents/Carers,

Hillingdon PCF is once again delighted to offer forum members that are resident in Hillingdon borough, an invitation to join the next free series of 3 webinars around the EHCP. Taking account the feedback received from those that were unable to make last year's evening sessions, we are able to offer daytime webinars as follows:

All 3 webinars are noon to 2pm.
  • Thurs 10th March: The EHCP Needs Assessment
  • Thurs 17th March: The EHCP
  • Thurs 24th March: The EHCP Annual Review
These are webinars for parents/carers, whether you are applying for an EHCP or whether you already have one, for your child/young person.  The first webinar (EHCP Needs Assessment), will explore the assessment process, time limits, who should contribute, and criteria for an assessment and issuing of an EHCP. There will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the webinar.

Tanya Williams is our guest presenter, and is a parent of 2 young people with SEN, who understands the importance of parent empowerment and this is why she began running workshops, advice clinics and webinars for support groups and other PCFs. After over 20 years working as a litigator, Tanya set up her own business advising families across the UK. Here is Tanya's website: Home | Tanya Williams SEN Advice

Some feedback from previous audiences:
" Real in depth understanding of annual reviews. It helped me to understand how to prepare for my next annual review.. Thought I knew the overall process- but now more confident"
" Clarity of information. Real world experience of what works, actual clauses useful to cite and the range and format of evidence that can be brought to an Annual Review"
"Tanya's talks are always full of very practical, detailed information on what parents can do to get the best support they can for their child. She has so much experience of helping parents with EHCPs, Annual Reviews, Tribunals etc and her real life examples really help to make everything clear. Highly recommended." ( Chair of  large support group)
"The best Annual Review my son ever had. Tanya was knowledgeable, patient and professional in her service. Very invaluable support offered"
