Weekly Bulletin - Issue 15 - Friday 17 December 2021

Issue 15 - Friday 17 December 2021

Dear Families

Seasons Greetings for our last bulletin of 2021!

As the year draws to an end, I would like to spend a moment reflecting on all the positives that have taken place this term:

  1. We have moved into our new school building.

  2. Pupils who were new to Meadow have done fantastically well at settling into their new school and coping with a major move.

  3. Pupils have been able to complete a term with only one week in bubbles and without large groups of pupils being required to isolate.

  4. Pupils have accessed their lessons in specialist rooms with subject specialist staff.

  5. Pupils have been able to play freely with their friends at break and lunchtimes.

  6. Pupils have been able to socialise over lunch in the dining room and hall.

  7. Some after school clubs were able to restart.

  8. The school was able to come together to celebrate our traditional Christmas lunches together.

  9. Pupils have accessed and benefited from trips to the community

Arrangements for the Start of Spring Term 2022

We return to school on Tuesday 4th January 2022. We ask that all families undertake a Lateral Flow Test with their child before they return to school and continue to complete twice weekly testing after that.

At this present time we expect schools to be fully open and operational in January,  but should the guidance change we already have contingency plans in place for:

  1. A return to onsite testing.

  2. Off-site / remote education.

  3. On-site education for:
    *  those who previously didn't engage remotely;
    * children where parents / carers are still required to attend work;
    * exam groups;
    * pupils on Child Protection or at risk Child in Need Plans;
    * any pupil who struggled emotionally during previous lock-downs;
    * Children who are Looked After.

  4. The provision of vouchers to pupils entitled to Free School Meals.

  5. The provision of laptops and Internet dongles.

  6. The monitoring of attendance and follow-up welfare checks

Thank you to all families for your support, feedback and good wishes.

On behalf of the whole staff team, may I wish you a happy and healthy break and a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Mrs J Rigby
Headteacher

ALL PLANS TO TRAVEL ABROAD
OVER THE CHRISTMAS PERIOD

If you are planning to travel abroad over the Christmas period, please can you email the dates of travel, destination and your child's name to meadow@meadowhighschool.org.

This will allow school to prepare for January 2022 in light of any changes to travel restrictions.

Medical & Welfare

  1. Please could parents check the dates of any emergency medication in school just in case it needs to be replaced.  If it runs out over Christmas then it will need to be ordered and replaced.

  2. Please can parents call in before 8.30am with a brief message as to why their child is absent from school.

  3. If students are attending medical appointments, then please send a copy of the appointment card to authorise their absence.

  4. Please can all school uniforms be clearly labelled with the pupil name.   It is much quicker and easier to reunite lost property with the child if it is labelled.

Household Support Fund

Households with children aged 0 to 19-year-old

As school holidays can be a particularly challenging time for families, anyone with children eligible for benefits-related free school meals will receive food vouchers of £15 per week per eligible child.

To be eligible for a grant, you must live in a household with children aged under 19 who attend a school within Hillingdon and be in receipt of at least 1 of these benefits:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • The guaranteed element of Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit - as long as you're not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and your annual gross income is no more than £16,190
  • Working Tax Credit run-on (paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit)
  • Universal Credit - your household income must be less than £7,400 a year after tax and not including any benefits you get
  • You must be in receipt of or eligible for benefit-related free school meals (not universal free school meals)

We will be contacting households eligible for benefit-related free school meals using the data from schools. These households will be given a unique reference number, which must be used when making a claim for utility payments.

If your children receive benefit-related free school meals and you have not been contacted by us for a free school meal voucher, you must contact your child's school to check your eligibility - they will then notify Hillingdon Council.

If you think you may be entitled to a payment based on the criteria outlined above and you have children under 5-years-old who are not attending school, you will be required to fill in a form via this website.

Apply for a winter grant payment (households with children aged 0 to 19-year-old)

If you require help and support in completing an application, please call          0203 949 5786.

How much will I get?

  • Food
You will receive £15 per child per week for a total period of 4 weeks (covering the 4 weeks of school holidays during the period of the scheme). This will be split into 3 separate payments, subject to eligibility.
    • 1st payment will cover the October 2021 half-term break.
    • 2nd payment will cover the 2-week Christmas break.
    • 3rd payment will be for February 2022 half-term (1 week). This payment will be made in February.
  • Utility costs
If you are eligible for food assistance, and you are a resident in Hillingdon, you will be entitled to a one-off payment of £100 per household for help towards your utility costs.

Winter Showcase 2021

This year for the Winter showcase students have been taking part in catch up curriculum projects within their Art and Performing art lessons as a way of incorporating missed work from last year.  Within their lessons students have learnt Jazz dance with some characterisation, Christmas songs signed along, decorated Christmas pinecone ornaments and graffiti designed t-shirts.  The whole school has also been involved in many of the activities and competitions around school. Like last year the class Grotto door competition has been a real hit and students have been very creative in their designs! Each class has decorated a  bauble to go up in the hall window onto a giant Christmas tree as part of the hall's decoration for this festive season. There has also been a key stage Christmas card competition with so many amazing entries- the winners from each key stage presented below!

Winners
Pathway 1- Liam H,

KS5- Paige H,

KS4- Luke M,

KS3- Brooke B.

Classes have had the opportunity to create their own performances within their form which has been great fun. Students have sung along to songs, re-enacted stories and been filmed making Christmas crafts. They have been able to showcase their work within Key stage assemblies and some staff members also made some guest appearances from the Masked singer entertainment during Christmas lunches.

This year Pathway 1 and Year 11 Music held a busking event to showcase their work to students. Classes had time slots to come down to the hall and watch a set of songs performed by the group whilst keeping to covid guidelines. Pathway 1 performed carols and played songs on the ocarina. Instead of money the group had stars given from each class at the end of the set and received 33 stars altogether! Students were very well behaved sitting in the audience and gave kind comments about their performances. In year 11 Music a band was formed to perform a pop song, a minimalism piece written within their lesson and a Christmas number to get the audience involved. Staff were also part of the band which meant Miss Zara joined in with singing as well as Mr Ellis on guitar which the students loved to see. They managed to collect 47 stars and did brilliantly considering they unfortunately missed a band mate.

The year 11 Drama group went around to present a news report promoting the busking event and staged a professional performance to classes. This got the classes excited for their events and prepared them with the health and safety rules within the hall.

We hope that next year we will be able to resume back to our usual Winter concert and facilitate using the new hall.

Thank you for all your support,

Ms Kalia and Arts Team

Help for the Holidays
               – Zones of Regulation

REMINDER:  Understanding and use of the Zones of Regulation is something we are continuing to develop across the school this year and is a key element of the SCERTS programme [Social Communication, Emotional Regulation and Transactional Supports] that has been running as a borough-wide initiative. The Zones of Regulation is a programme geared towards helping students gain skills in consciously regulating their actions, which in turn leads to increased control and problem solving abilities. Students are supported to gain skills recognising when they are in different states called ‘zones’ and also learn how to use strategies or tools to stay in a zone or move from one to another.

The aim is for students to gain skills recognising and managing their emotions more effectively as well as develop a wider perspective about how others see and react to their behaviour.  We will be running some workshops for parents in the Spring term however if you would like to find out more please go to  https://zonesofregulation.com/index.html

Our students are now becoming very good at identifying the zone they are in. The holiday period can be a very exciting with a lot of change in routine, you might find that the zones chart below is a very helpful strategy to use.  I have included some ideas for ‘tools’ that your child can discuss with you.  It is better if you talk about what ‘tools’ work well in the different zones in advance, this will allow you to calmly prompt your child towards the right strategy if needed.

Remember:

NO zone is linked to bad behaviour, the zones are how a person is feeling.  It is normal for us all to move between the zones as part of our day. The Green Zone is the most comfortable to be in, Red Zone does not feel good.   It is important to be able to acknowledge that we are in this zone without blame and then take positive steps to calm.  When your child is in the Red Zone language should be kept to a minimum; giving a child space to process and implement strategies is what we are looking to do.  Tell your child you are proud of them for using the zones so well before beginning to discuss what caused the upset.  It is worth remembering that the clearest thinking and communication happens in the Green Zone and so it makes sense to wait until this is achieved.

DO prompt your child to express the zone they feel they are in either by saying the name of the zone or pointing to the chart.

DO NOT tell your child what zone they are in – instead make an observation, ‘I think you are in ... what do you think? THEN prompt with the agreed ‘tool’.

Trickier but a good skills to build:  Encourage your family and friends to use the ‘zones’ to explain how they are feeling to your child. If you are in ‘yellow zone’ your child can understand that they will need to wait 5 minutes until you are in the ‘green zone’ when you will be able to listen properly to what they want to say.  Some families find using a timer helpful for this if your child struggles with the concept of time.

Watch and talk about: I have made a short video about the zones (see Meadow High School Hello Youtube channel), you might find it helpful to watch with your child as a way of starting this conversation at home.

I hope that this helps and wish you all a wonderful end to the year and start to 2022!

Covid Information

HILLINGDON HOSPITAL
NEW PUBLIC COVID-19 VACCINATION HUB OPEN

The Hillingdon Hospitals Trust has opened a new public Covid-19 vaccination hub, at Hillingdon Hospital, and there are plenty of appointments available – either book online or walk in.

About the hub:

The hub is located on Pinewood Ward at Hillingdon Hospital, and can be accessed via a dedicated external entrance through the car park just off Royal Lane, so that visitors do not need to go through the main hospital building.

We are offering the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine, and can provide first and second doses to anyone 16 or over, as well as boosters for adults over the age of 18.

The hub is open between 8.30am and 7.30pm, seven days a week. Walk-in appointments are available.

Appointments can also be made through the National Booking system. Pre-bookable booster appointments are currently being offered to anyone over the age of 30, and the system will be updated on Wednesday 15 December to allow those over the age of 18 to book for their booster.

In the meantime, over 18s are welcome to access booster vaccines through walk-in appointments, provided it has been at least 3 months (91 days) since their second dose.

Please note that we still require anyone attending our sites to wear a clean surgical mask, maintain social distancing, and wash/sanitise hands regularly. This helps us to keep everyone safe.

Current vaccine eligibility:

  • Anyone over the aged 16 or over can have a vaccine.
  • People aged 18 or over should have their second dose from 8 weeks after their first dose.
  • Most people aged 16 or 17 should have their second dose from 12 weeks after their first dose.
  • Anyone aged 18 or over can get a booster vaccine from 3 months (91 days) after their second dose.

Vaccines are an effective way for us to combat the virus - they save lives.  If you have any questions or concerns about the vaccine, there is a wealth of information available on the NHS Coronavirus Vaccination webpage and the Government’s website.
