Weekly Bulletin - Issue 13 - Friday 3 December 2021

Issue 13 - Friday 3 December 2021

Dear Families

Covid

We have had three cases in our community since the last bulletin.

I have re-ordered more Lateral Flow Tests and expect them next week.  We will send more kits home with you to continue with the twice weekly testing for your child.

We currently have had no confirmed Omicron variant cases or persons who have had close contacts with a person with this variant.

To reduce the risk that individuals might have to isolate over the Christmas period we have taken / decided on the following actions:

  • asked staff who are able to, to wear masks in communal areas or when they are not able to socially distance from a pupil.

  • advised pupils to wear masks in communal areas and whilst on transport

  • had another push on pupils hand hygiene, especially effective hand washing

  • altered our arrangements for the last week of term, when pupils will return to either a full or partial bubble model, reducing contacts across the school. To facilitate this we have brought forward our Christmas lunches to next week

  • altered our Big Breakfast arrangements for the last day of term to a 'Meadow-roo' delivery service including bacon baps, veggie or meat sausage in a bun or a fried egg roll. There will also be hot chocolate or an alternative drink delivered direct to the classroom for any pupils who order.

PLIMS, Personalised Learning Intention Maps

Staff are currently reviewing evidence captured about the progress pupils have made towards their PLIM targets.  These targets are based on the outcomes in the pupils EHC plan.

In the Spring we will be launching subject frameworks for English, Maths and PSHCE.

Pupils' small step progress is monitored and recorded in their books or folders, but with the launch of the EfL subject frameworks, we will be able to monitor larger step progress and compare data on different cohorts.

Cold weather

As you know, we have experienced some extremely cold weather this week and are likely to have more over the coming months. If you haven't already done so, please consider purchasing your child a warm coat, gloves and a hat as well as good winter shoes or black trainers.

If your child is in receipt of Free School Meals, please make contact with our Home Liaison Officer dgleedyoung@meadowhighschool.org  should you need financial support in purchasing these items.

Best wishes to you all for a cosy weekend!

Rapid Readers

At Meadow, we have always given additional curriculum time for the development of pupils reading, writing and comprehension skills.  These skills are needed across all curriculum areas and throughout a person's life making them core to the work we do here to prepare pupils for Life After Meadow.

As part of our commitment and drive to find better ways of teaching and supporting pupils we introduced a new supported reading program this term. The Rapid Readers program is designed specifically for pupils who struggle with reading, but includes a huge range of both fiction and non-fiction texts with age appropriate material to engage learners. All pupils spend the first part of every day 'waking up their brain' to get it ready to engage in education. This is through: guided whole group reading, individual reading, responding to texts in writing, discussion and regular phonics practice.

In the Spring term I will be offering parent drop in sessions where the RAPID program can be further explained and examples of what students are doing in lessons can be seen.

Pupil Showcase:
Fantastic Descriptive Story Writing

In Sixth Form we have been looking at the power of good descriptive writing and I gave the students the start of the story (the first two paragraphs) – they could then take it in whatever direction their imagination led them.  The challenge was to incorporate descriptive language techniques and vary their sentence starters to engage and entertain their audience.

They have all produced some superb work that, with their permission, we will be posting in a brand-new section of the website in the New Year.  For now, I would like to share a truly outstanding piece of writing by an amazing young man, Paul O in Sixth Form.

Mrs A. Sugden – English & Communication Faculty Leader]

Running for my life, my feet pounding on the forest floor as I slipped and stumbled through the darkness that threatened to swallow me alive.  Twigs snapped around me as I crashed through the foliage, desperately sprinting, never looking back.

Air. I needed air.  In, out, in, out.  My lungs burned like fire and my legs shook like leaves in a storm.  How much longer could I run for?  Probably not long enough.  The moon emerged briefly from behind the cloak of clouds and I took the opportunity to stop and look around me, my breath misting into the cold night air.

Continue the story..........what happens next?

As I calmed my breaths, I knew running away from it was no longer an option anymore.  I’ve been running from it for so long that ... I don’t even remember why anymore, but in the back of my mind knew what, like an old clock chiming every few hours.

I then heard it coming from both the snapping of twigs and decaying leaves as well as the clouds, once again locking me in the dark once more.  But I did not run, did not scream. I stood still, waiting for it to arrive.

I mean I wanted to run but despite my body wanting to take the flight option ... I chose fight.

Chill.  A chill ran down my spine.  I knew it was behind me, so I turned to face it.  Despite how pitch black it was, I knew it was there from its presence but mostly from its bright glowing eyes that felt like staring at the sun.

I took a deep breath and opened my mouth but of course I could not say a word.  Of course, it never wanted me to talk, but I managed to find my voice.

“I’m tired of this.  I’m done letting you take control of my life.  You always kept me from being myself, and I’m done!” I yelled at it, not even noticing that the grass beneath me that was once decaying, was now how it was meant to be, and even a light surrounding me was growing brighter.

As for the thing ... my anxiety, my depression, was stepping back like it was afraid of me now. Even though it never had a mouth, it can talk to me in my head.  Normally it said negative things like, “unless”, “no one wants you”.  It was now saying, “Please don’t do it, you and I both know you can’t live without me.”

“No, I can, you’re no longer in control of my decisions and actions so begone!” I yelled and everything was engulfed with a bright light.

I had to shut my eyes because it was so hard to see, but a few seconds later I opened them and found myself in a grassy plain instead of the pitch black darkness.  But not only that, I felt more confident and even happy which I’ve not felt in a long time.  I also realised that I could no longer hear those voices in my head any more, it was ... my own thoughts. I started to feel tears welling up in my eyes.  I finally feel alive, happy, and I no longer felt afraid.

I rubbed my eyes with my arm and took a deep breath.  Normally breathing felt painful, but now it was soothing and warm.  I could finally be myself (and stop thinking on what others thought) as well as the new bright future that I’m going to go to instead of being afraid.
