Issue 4 - Friday 30 September 2022

Dear Families,

Ark Farm Visit

We had a lovely visit from Ark Farm this week. Pupils learnt about animal care, as well as being able to stroke and hold some very cute animals.  I was very impressed that even those pupils who are nervous around animals participated.

National Schools Breakfast Programme

A little reminder that we participate in the National Schools Breakfast Programme, which provides a free bowl of cereal or half a bagel every day to every pupil.  Even if pupils have had breakfast, they are very welcome to have this little top up as they come into school!

Uniform

If you have any good quality uniform that your child no longer needs, please consider donating it to school. We will pass it on to the Salvation Army where families in need will be able to access it.

Pupil Panel

Thank you to our Pupil Panel who took part in interviewing for an Assistant Headteacher this week. Elijah, Harwinder and Rafia were praised by the candidates for being welcoming and for asking such interesting questions. Our Chair of Governors, who observed the panel, was impressed at how insightful the feedback was from the pupils.

School Council / Sports Council and 6th Form Committee

Pupils have been nominating and voting for their class representatives this week. Some of last year's School Council members spoke in assembly about the qualities needed to make a good Council or Committee member. Thank you to all our new Council or Committee members.

Meet the Tutor Evening

We are looking forward to seeing you at Meet the Tutor Evening next week. You are now able to join in person or virtually.  If you haven't already, please sign up for an appointment time.

Very best wishes for your weekend.

Kind regards,

Mrs J Rigby
Headteacher

What Have They Been
Learning All Day?

You may be one of the lucky parents or carers whose child spends over six hours a day at Meadow, comes home and tells you exactly what they've been learning.  Or you maybe amongst the 99.9% whose child comes home and is less keen to give you all the details!

Our website may be able to help.

To see a summary of what we're teaching your child, go to the school website and search for "learning matrix" and select the first match.  Or if you're reading this and can click a link, it's here:  CURRICULUM / LEARNING MATXRIX

We hope that's useful to you, and if it is, why not throw some of the curriculum topics into conversation with your child? - they may surprise you with what they know!

Extended Learning at Home:
Useful Literacy Activities

We are all aware that Home Learning can sometimes become challenging as your child becomes a teenager - I remember these years well...  We therefore want to ensure that Home Learning is something that is meaningful and a good use of time at home for all - parents and pupils!  At Meadow High School, our vision is to help our pupils become confident young adults, maximising their abilities and developing their skills to allow them to be happy and contribute to society in their ‘life beyond Meadow’.   To this end, we aim to encourage independence, development of life skills, confidence and positive self-esteem.

The list of literacy tasks has been carefully curated to support this vision; they are designed to be completed at home and include practical tasks to develop independent life skills as well as address all three areas of English with a focus on social communication skills. The tasks relate to your child’s programme of study and examination skills required.

We all know that the best learning is achieved through the quality of the experience with engagement at the heart of this process.  The most beneficial way to achieve this is through involving your child in the learning process, focusing on developing their metacognitive skills i.e. critical thinking skills. These are the skills that will best support your child to be successful in education but also in life-long learning.

Please use this link on the school website PARENTS / EXTENDED LEARNING AT HOME to find out more and access the Literacy Skills list.

If you need help with how approach any of the tasks, your child's class team will be very happy to help.

Attendance News

CLASS ATTENDANCE WINNER!
W/C 19/09/2022
SM, 9LD, GM & VL ………100%

{alt_tag}

Dear Parents/Carers

ATTENDANCE

I would like to draw your attention once again to the attendance monitoring that is in place at Meadow High School

There will be 3 stages of attendance monitoring:

Stage 1 – A letter of concern will be sent to parents whose childs
attendance is under 97%. Internal monitoring will commence

If no significant improvement, it moves to –

Stage 2 – Attendance of under 95%. Internal monitoring will continue.
Parents will be invited in for a meeting to discuss the matter further.

If no significant improvement, monitoring then moves to –

Stage 3 – Attendance under 90%. Referral to the Local Authority
Participation team will be made. This leads to a panel meeting with the
Local Authority and a possible fine.

At the beginning of a new school year it is very easy for percentages to fall.
By highlighting to parents if their child’s attendance is below expected, we hope to ensure every effort is made for pupils to attend if they are well enough.

Many pupils can cope with milder illnesses in school and the dedicated welfare staff will always ensure if a pupil is not well enough to be in school, that they are sent home.

Medial evidence is required for all appointments; these absences are authorised but will affect attendance percentages. Parents will still be notified of their child’s percentage attendance but will not be moved on to the next attendance stage if evidence is provided.

For good attendance recognition/awards, every pupil’s attendance will be looked at individually and appointment with medical evidence will be discounted.

PUNCTUALITY

Lateness can also have an effect on attendance percentages. If pupils are significantly late, and arrive after registration has closed, they are given a code that effects the attendance percentage.

When students come to class late, it can disrupt the flow of the class, distract other students, impede learning, and generally erode class morale. Moreover, if left unchecked, lateness can become chronic and spread throughout the class. Because there are a number of possible reasons students arrive to class late, considering which causes are at the root of the problem can help guide teachers to appropriate responses and strategies. Understanding the reasons, however, does not require tolerating the behaviour.

If you are having problems getting your child into school on time, please contact the welfare team, so we can support you and offer strategies to help you.

HILLINGDON PARENT CARER FORUM

MESSAGE REGARDING A THERAPIES PROJECT

Dear Parents/Carers,

The Designated Clinical Officer (DCO) for SEND in Hillingdon, is looking at delivering early intervention therapies (particularly Speech and Language and OT) in an innovative way, with the aim of preventing the need for more intensive therapy later in the child's life.

It would be a great benefit to the project group, to include a Hillingdon parent/carer who has a young child with additional needs, using CITS therapies eg. SaLT and OT etc., to be part of this group in order to get your perspective. Do you wish to be part of this project?

If so, the following dates have been suggested. Please reply with any of the dates you can attend, and we can put you in touch with the DCO, so that the meeting date can be agreed.

06.10.22 09.30-10.30hrs
10.10.22 10.00-11.00hrs
12.10.22 10.00-11.00hrs

01.11.22 10.30-11.30hrs
03.11.22 10.00-11.00hrs

Best wishes,
Hillingdon PCF
