Weekly Bulletin - Issue 7 - Friday 15 October 2021

Issue 7 - Friday 15 October 2021

Dear Families

Covid

We have had no positive cases in our community since the last bulletin.

You should have received a box of 7 more LFT tests this week to allow you to complete twice weekly testing at home with your child.  Please continue to do this, especially as we are entering the darker - colder months when Covid and other viruses flourish.

Assembly

This week we learned about the school's chosen charity for the year 'Steel Bones'. This is a small charity that works with amputees.  Each year there are around 5,000 amputations in the UK.  Going through an amputation is obviously a difficult thing to do and people can feel lonely and struggle with their new reality. The charity works to support amputees and to connect them to other amputees to help them motivate and inspire each other.

One of our own staff, Ms Lennon, went through just such an experience 8 months ago and returned to school to continue her amazing work in Horticulture, Hairdressing and many other areas of the curriculum.  Yesterday, Ms Lennon spoke to pupils about the charity and her own experience and invited them to ask questions to better enable them to understand what being an amputee means and what a prosthetic is.

We also looked at many examples of amputees to see what they had gone on to achieve. These inspirational stories were an amazing example of Aspire! Work! Achieve!

To find out more about the work of Steel Bones please visit https://steelbone.co.uk/

Black History Month

As we continue to learn about Black history in our lessons, pupils were also treated to two dance workshops this week. One was a Jerusalema dance workshop and the other a traditional dance workshop specifically for KS3 pupils.

Evidence for Learning - call for pilot group volunteers

We would still like to invite 2 or 3 more parents / carers to join our pilot group.  If your child is in the following classes, please consider volunteering:

7CH / 7FM / 8LB / 8NC / 8CB / 9KK / 9CL / 10RE / 10MC / 10ZK / 11JT / 11BA / AP / KM / AM / VL / MS / GM / DL / MR

If you sign up for the group you will be asked to:

  1. Sign up to the Evidence for Learning parent app
  2. Undertake training
  3. Provide feedback as requested

This is to enable us to smooth out any issues before rolling out the app to all families.  Please be aware that we are not expecting to present you with the finished article and system, but are rather working with you to get to that point.

Early Bird Club

We have had such a low uptake for this provision that we are not currently able to offer it.  If you didn't express an interest in the club but would now like to do so, please phone and request a form to complete.  My apologies to those families who did express an interest.  I will keep you details on file, so that should we have enough pupils to make this club viable I can contact you.

Sports and Trips

It has been wonderful to see that our visits to the community and sporting events have been able to restart with earnest this half-term.  Pupils benefit hugely from being able to go out and learn in 'real' situations. Transferring the skills and knowledge they learn in school and generalising this in the community is a vital part of their development.

For our sporting enthusiasts it has been great to get back to events where they can play with or compete against other individuals and teams.  We very much believe that sport is about participation and enjoyment not winning!

If you would like any advice and guidance about how to support your child in the community and to access local provisions, please arrange a chat with your child's form tutor. They would be happy to help and to provide prompt / sequence visuals to support you and your child.

Support

On the subject of support, please don't hesitate to contact your child's form tutor should you need support with any challenges you are facing regarding your child in the home or community. They will be able to support you with many issues or can signpost you to other staff or organisations that can support.

Halloween Event

I am excited to be hosting our yearly Halloween Event again. This event will take place over two days on Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st October.

There will be games and a spooky sweet sale at the cost of 20p. Cakes will be 50p each.  We will be providing ‘free from’ snacks for those with allergies.   Students can bring money in to spend if they wish.

We have had to spread this Halloween event over two days, so each class can have a class photo with props.  This also allows for a ten-minute slot ensuring the correct cleaning between classes.

Face painting will take place this year at the cost of 50p.  This is optional.  Please fill out the form in the letter sent home if you would prefer your child to opt out of face painting.

Thank you to Leon P (Class 6KM) for creating the amazing poster below, advertising the Halloween Event.

Pupils have continued to participate in activities related to Black History Month this week. At lunchtimes staff have led dance workshops, pupils have been cooking and visited our new interactive display.

Thank you to all staff and pupils for their engagement and support this week!

Look out for more next week !

EXAMS UPDATE

WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH EXAMS THIS YEAR ?

Dear Parents/Carers

You may be aware that some students in Year 11 and Sixth Form take external exams such as GCSEs, Functional Skills and Entry Level Certificates.

You may also be aware that the Government has been consulting on the process for awarding grades in summer 2022 and published its decisions at the end of last week.  There has been a lot of speculation in the Media about exams.  We would like to share the following information with you and hope that this may allay any concerns you may have about your son or daughter taking exams in Summer 2022.

The Government remains committed to all GCSE, and vocational exams (Functional Skills and Entry Levels)  going ahead as planned. The DfE have advised that we deliver the full curriculum for each subject and prepare students for exams as we would do in any normal year. For some subjects, adjustments will be made to final assessments and for others, awarding bodies will provide advance information on the focus of the content. This information will be made available in early February 2022.

In the event that final exams cannot go ahead, as is currently planned, a system based on Teacher Assessed Grades will be put in place. This means that all formal assessments planned for this academic year may be used in the formulation of such a grade should it prove necessary. Teachers will remind students ahead of formal assessments of their potential importance but we would urge students to be mindful of this when preparing for all formal assessments this year.

We will continue to do all that we can to support students in their preparation for exams in summer 2022.

Kind regards
Mrs Norris - Exams Officer

CCTV and the Law
Court ruling – Media coverage today

Dear Watch Member,

Many residents have contacted us following articles in the press and on TV today regarding damages awarded against the owner of a video doorbell for invasion of privacy following a court ruling.

Residents are reminded that the rules relating to the use of all types of domestic CCTV installation are available here from the ICO website:

https://ico.org.uk/your-data-matters/domestic-cctv-systems-guidance-for-people-using-cctv/

It is very clear from the ICO page linked above that it is perfectly legal to film beyond your boundary, however the homeowner is responsible for ensuring that they are doing it in ways that comply with the data protection laws (which are all listed or linked from the above page for you to explore and read for yourself).

As a very minimum, if your system films beyond your boundary then you must display a sign that shows that you are operating CCTV.

In the particular case in question, the breach was reportedly related to the fact that (a) devices that captured audio were able to capture conversations beyond the boundary and (b) that parts of the complainants private property (e.g. front garden) were also captured within the imagery without their permission.

For (a) each case will be different and will depend on the distance from the bell to the nearest public space – so do some tests of yourself speaking and retain that clip to demonstrate that you’ve tested that aspect.  For (b) HNW is aware of many situations where groups of neighbours cover the frontage of each others’ property by mutual agreement, however it is up to each camera owner to make sure that what is being filmed is covered by such an agreement.

In summary, please read the page linked above and make sure that you fully understand and comply with the rules.  In many cases if you are challenged by a neighbour over the use of your CCTV, a sensible and early discussion will very often allow everyone to reach a mutual understanding, and a way forward.
