Issue 19 - Friday 2 February 2024

Dear Families

Emergency Contact Details

We have had a few health emergencies recently, where we have either not been able to contact anyone on the pupil's contact list, or the numbers are out of date.

Please ensure you let us know if your contact details change. This would include your home address, email addresses and mobile phone numbers. It might also include the priority order you would want us to contact you in the event of an emergency. We always hold at least two numbers on our system, but are happy to take more if you can provide them.  Please let us know the order we should contact people, the relationship to the pupil and their phone number.

Attendance

Thank you to all the families who are engaging with us to improve their child's attendance.  Should you need further support, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Assembly

We learnt about Chinese New Year slightly early this year, as the actual celebration date is February 11th!  We combined this with National Reading Week and read an interesting story about the origins of the Chinese New Year.  Pupils were also able to see the exciting range of books we hold in our library, where they could read more stories or learn more about Chinese culture and traditions.

Themed Days

To facilitate some staff training for our new phonics program, the pupils in Pathway 2/3 are having three themed days next week. Class teams are preparing and supporting their pupils for this change.  The focus of these days is to develop social communication skills through topic-based learning and activities.

The themes are:

  • Tuesday - Shrove Tuesday / Lent;
  • Wednesday - Mental Health / Wellbeing
  • Thursday - Valentines Day / Relationships

Pupils studying for accredited courses will still attend those lessons, but will participate in the themed learning the rest of the time.  Pupils who attend therapeutic or other interventions will still access these provisions.  Pathway 1 staff have been accessing their training in twilight sessions and Pathway 1 pupils integrate their social communication learning into their regular themed learning lessons.

May I wish you all a wonderful weekend and I hope you have the opportunity to enjoy some books with your child as part of National Reading Week.

Mrs J Rigby
Headteacher

Reminder

Monday 12 February 2024 - Friday 16 February 2024
HALF TERM

Monday 19 February 2024
Annual Review Day
School is CLOSED to pupils

Mobile Phones on Site (Pupils)

Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils

A reminder, pupils in Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 are not allowed to use mobile phones anywhere on the school site. This includes morning arrival when waiting to go to form, and dismissal at the end of the day.

At Meadow High School there is a clear expectation that all pupils in Year 7 - 11 who choose to bring a mobile phone to school hand these to their form tutor during morning registration. These are kept securely in the class safe until afternoon dismissal. Parents/carers will be informed if their young person is not complying with this, or is seen using their phone on site.

Key Stage 5

Pupils in 6th form are encouraged to hand their devices to the form tutor. They can collect them for use during morning and lunch breaks ONLY to listen to music/ play a game, etc.

Year 12 groups are not allowed to use their phones until the end of the first half term.

Please note that access to mobile phones is a 6th form privilege and can be revoked at any time if pupils are not staying within the agreed use of their devices.

All Pupils

Students are NOT allowed to access ANY social media while they are in school.  Any student not following this rule must hand their devices over and parents/carers will be notified.

Photos videos: Pupils are NOT ALLOWED to take photographs in school and no images/videos can be shared with other pupils.

New guidance from the Department for Education backs headteachers in banning mobile phone use throughout the school day, (including at break times), to tackle disruptive behaviour and online bullying, while boosting attention during lessons. It aims to support the wider work the government is doing to raise standards in schools by increasing students’ focus and reducing distractions.

Year 10 Dance Options Performance

Miss Kalia's Year 10 Dance Options performed their rendition of the Nutcracker Remixed in the Pathway 1 assembly to showcase their learning from this term. They demonstrated some brilliant Ballet movement and all took the role of a character from the story.  The group then transitioned into a street dance which had some tricky but effective moves which led them into a freestyle circle. Students were brave to come into the centre and select their favourite dance move to the audience. They all did exceptionally well for the Dance performance in the new hall and used the wings correctly.      Well Done!

Sixth Form Drama Group Performance

Miss Kalia's 6th form Drama group performed their work to Mrs Rigby and staff before the Christmas break showcasing their hard work on voice work and monologues. The group had created their own story based around the characters from Stardust.  They wrote short monologues to perform with emotion and taking time with their breathing. At the end they performed and signed to Rudolf. More photos on the website here.
