Issue 8 - Friday 4 November 2022
|
|
|
Dear Families,
Welcome back to school in a wet and windy November! Thankfully the days are still quite mild.
We had a spooky bunch that came back from half-term last Monday with lots of pupils choosing to participate in our Halloween events. There were some amazing costumes on display, and it was lovely to see so many pupils enjoying socialising with each other at the disco. The Halloween House and activities that Miss Barham set up with pupils from the intervention group were extremely popular, you can see some photos from this on our Twitter and below.
We had our first termly fire drill on Monday. Prior to this Form Teams had been walking through escape routes and muster points with their pupils which made the actual fire drill run very smoothly. I was extremely impressed at how well pupils adapted to the new muster location and how mature and sensible our new pupils were.
In assembly this week we used tongue twisters (or finger fumbles for signers!) to look at the benefits of happiness and laughter. A big thank-you to Sameer and Jasmine who volunteered to read a really tricky one out loud in front of the whole school. This was one of the most raucous assemblies ever, but it was an absolute pleasure to see pupils and staff interacting and laughing with each other. We definitely all felt the positive benefits!
Here's wishing you an equally happy weekend.
Kind regards,
|

Jack Petchey
Outstanding Achiever Award
Sherice won the Jack Petchey award for September.
Sherice was nominated for this award, as she independently signed up to be a School buddy. Sherice supports pupils on the blue playground during her own break, several times a week. There was a small incident with a pupil. Sherice used her own initiative and infomed the class Teacher. Sherice has been a huge help at break times.
Sherice has £300 to spend from our wish list that will benefit our School, which she is still deciding on.
Well done Sherice !

TRANSITION COFFEE MORNING
ALL YEAR 12, 13 AND 14 PARENTS
We would like to invite parents and carers to a transition coffee morning on Wednesday 9th November from 9.30am - 11.00am. This will be hosted in the main hall. You can drop in and out of the session depending on your availability.
When young people leave Meadow High School in Year 13 or 14, they often continue education elsewhere. This will generally be a mainstream provision or a specialist provision. We have organised for the local provisions to represent their setting at a coffee morning, so that you can have the opportunity to ask questions, read perspectives, and have a deeper understanding of the opportunities available for your child.
Uzma Houston and Asmah Hussain, SEND officers for Hillingdon borough will also be in attendance. Uzma will be taking over Asmah’s caseload and will be the main point of contact for all transitions. The confirmed provisions in attendance are:
- Orchard Hill College
- Green Corridor
- Uxbridge College
- BCA (Berkshire College of Agriculture)
- Great Oaks will not be attending on this occasion due to staffing commitments.
A representative from Project Search will be available to talk to. Project Search is an internship based at the Marriott Hotel in Heathrow where students with SEND undertake several rotations of work experience and are supported by job coaches with the overall aim to gain employment. Many of our students have gone on to gain paid employment after this programme.
Our independent transitions and careers advisor Sue Stock will also be in attendance. Sue works with each student at Meadow to plan future steps and will be able to support families with applications so it is important that you do meet with her.
Please note that car parking is extremely limited due to our new build, so we would advise using public transportation where possible.
Yours sincerely
Miss M Taylor Miss A Willis
Assistant Head, Sixth Form Assistant Head, Pathway 1

VOLUNTARY WORK EXPERIENCE PLACEMENTS NEEDED !
Dear Parents/Carers,
We are looking for voluntary work experience opportunities for Year 13/14 students - 1 day a week, minimum of 4 hours/day (currently Tuesday only due to our school timetable and hours between 9am-3pm). Our students are aged 17+ with learning difficulties/disabilities. We only place students who we believe are capable and confident to work under supervision in the community. These placements will be term time only and students do not attend work placements during school holidays, unless they wish to, and it is agreed by the provider. Arts News!
What’s new from the start of the year?
It’s been a fun and inspiring first half term in the Arts Faculty with a phenomenal creative response from students, staff and parents to lots of exciting new experiences.
Something that has been at the forefront in staff minds is how we can provide opportunities for pupils to really enjoy social experiences alongside their academic Arts learning.
October was a great month to raise awareness about Historical figures and learning about Black role models. On Friday the 7th of October, pupils in Key stage 3 were given the option of participating in an African Dance workshop with an instructor from Dancedays or doing Art and Craft around Black role models and Maasai mask collage. The pupils from different classes worked together and showed an impressive knowledge of why learning about Black History and role models is so important.
During the Friday afternoon session Key stage 4 and 6th Form pupils also had the option of doing the Dance workshop, there was a massive turn out from Pathway one, several of our 6th Form and year 11 Pathway 2 and 3 pupils mentioned how fun it was to join in with students across the school. Rafia mentioned “I have never done that sort of Dance before I really enjoyed it!” Archie also said he wasn't expecting to enjoy it so much as it is quite different to what he is used to, both were keen to have more new experiences.
|
|
|
|
With Mr Ellis in Music this term he also inspired Year 8 and 9 pupils to get involved in Musical Cultural activities. He said, “they have particularly enjoyed learning about Music genres from Africa, China and India, whilst year 7 have experimented with a broad range of new instruments, scales, and signing while singing”.
In Dance Miss Kalia shared that, “students have been independently remembering their dance kits to wear to their practical lessons in the quiet eater's hall. This has been a great chance for them to use the mirrors and dance in the larger space.
|
|
In Year 8 Dance students have worked hard to learn Jazz dance and have been experimenting using different props into their routines.
Don’t they look jazzy!
They also danced in Black history month to many Jazz singers who they enjoyed listening to, such as Nina Simone and Billie Holiday.”
|
|
|
In Year 9 Dance students have been working on their expressive movement and linking emotions. There have been some brilliant observations from 9LC when watching contemporary dance and then trying out some of the techniques. The class were very eager to learn other styles and got to try out the basic Tap moves. Great job!
In Art and Drama combined lessons, Year 9 pupils enthusiastically celebrated Chadwick Boseman’s life and groundbreaking role in Black Panther, debating what makes a hero?
This year we have been really pleased to welcome our new Art and Design Teacher Miss St John, to the Art and Design Department. She has settled in quickly to the culture of the school and is really engaged in getting to know the pupils and their personal Art interests.
Miss St John recently shared her thoughts, she explained that “all the pupils have been working really well in Art and Design”. One project example she shared is, “the year 8’s have been enjoying their Autumn project on Architecture and Buildings, where they have researched imaginative Architecture and looked at the Artist’s Kandinsky and Mondrian. One student in particular found it hard to settle at first, but is now producing amazing pieces. Emily achieved the Lower school Art student of the Month Certificate for October (please see below) and she also bravely joined in with dancing during the African dance workshop.
We are very proud of all our pupils' participation.

Well it’s nearly “the most wonderful time of the year” and again we are calling on our lovely community. So many of you have helped us for the last few years but we know this year will be very different for many of us, and we understand this, but we still have loads of families needing help, actually even more so this year. So with this in mind if you are able to put maybe one extra item a week in your basket that will be such a big help.
Below you will see a list of the items we include in our boxes, if you can help with donating anything we would be very grateful. Remember your gifts help many families that otherwise would struggle during this holiday time.
   PRESENT LIST
This year again we will be asking for specific items for our gift boxes. We decided this as it will reduce unusable gifts ( wrong ages, likes, ability) and help us to spread the boxes further.
