Dear Parents and Carers
It was great to see so many of you attending my Parent Coffee Morning last week so I could share with you the work we have been doing at Meadow to ensure your children receive a world-class education. We covered the work we have done on our Values and Mission Statement as well as update you on how we have responded to your comments from our last meeting and to see how the new ‘Positive Notes’ have been received at home.
I also informed you about the launch of our new website, that went live on Monday 2nd March at midday with our social media platforms following slightly later on.
I also shared with you an update on the progress of our new building at Northwood Road and I discussed with you how we will work with families to ensure a smooth transition to our new premises. To that end, I would like to invite you to attend a parent information session about the new building. There are two sessions available to parents, either 11th March at 5pm or 12th March at 9.30am. At this meeting I will update you on the progress of the building as well as the timeline for moving and how this will impact the end of the school year and the start of the new academic year. Please try to attend one of these sessions if you can. I would also reiterate that these sessions are for parents only.
This week we also hosted the Hillingdon Attendance Hub. It is the first time we have been asked to host an event run by the local authority, and we hope many more will follow. At the event, attended by over 40 Hillingdon Schools, good practice was shared on how schools are promoting excellent attendance among their students. I would like to remind all parents of the need to ensure their child is in school 95% of the time and that a single day off per week can detrimentally impact student outcomes and next steps.

|
We have also been celebrating Book Day and Careers Week this week with all students engaging in different careers activities and receiving talks of different career paths from a range of employers. To recognise book week, we have also been reading stories to students in lessons and in the library and on Thursday we all came to school dressed as characters from books. More photos next week.

Finally for this week you might have heard in the local news or on social media about a craze hitting some London boroughs, known as Student Wars. This anti social trend seeks to influence students to ‘fight on site’ any student they see from another school. I wanted to reassure parents that this has not impacted us at Meadows yet and, so far, it has had limited impact in Hillingdon itself. However, I wanted to share with parents the article link below so they can keep an eye and ear out at home for any language that might be indicative of involvement in this latest craze. If you have any cause for alarm or have any information, please share it with the Police directly.

I wish you all an amazing week.

Attendance - Winners !
Our Attendance Competition between classes has commenced, in which the class with the highest fortnightly attendance is awarded with the Attendance Trophy.
This week the award was awarded within Pathway 2 and the results are:
|
|
1st place: Class 10DM with 96.7%
2nd place: Class 7KS with 96.2%
3rd place: Class 8SM with 95.7%
Well done to class 10DM and all of our pupils who are doing their best to be in school every day!

If your child is suffering from sickness or other NHS-advised illnesses, we support their need to stay at home and recover. Please refer to https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/is-my-child-too-ill-for-school/ if in doubt, and rest assured that our Welfare Team will assess your child and contact you if we consider them too unwell to be in school.
Being around teachers and friends in a school environment is the best way for pupils to learn and reach their potential. Time in school also keeps children safe and provides access to extra-curricular opportunities and pastoral care. Every moment in school counts. For example, a child who is absent for three days over half a term could miss 18 hours of learning. The higher a pupil’s attendance, the more they are likely to learn and build their social skills, ready for a more successful future.
It’s important that we work together as a community to support the attendance of all our pupils and we continue to welcome your communication if there is anything you would like to discuss regarding this. In the first instance, please speak to your child’s Form Tutor or contact Miss Kelliher: attendance@meadowhighschool.org

Pathway 1
Visit From Royal Culinary of Arts
Pathway 1 Key Stage 3 pupils had an exciting visitor this week from the Royal Culinary of Arts. In the first of three sessions, Chef Amandeep visited us to deliver a session on our taste and senses.
|
|
|
The pupils were challenged to identify the five tastes:
- Sweet
- Sour
- Salty
- Bitter
- Umami
|
|
As well as identifying where they could taste this on the different areas of their tongue.
This linked in with our senses topic from Spring 1 and also into Careers Week which we are currently celebrating.
The following pupils expressed their enjoyment:
|
|
"It was really good and it was really tasty, except for the mint jelly, I thought it was going to be cherry flavoured! I really liked the kiwi and the honey." Ty
"I liked the food, I didn't like the jelly! It was not my favourite." Karina
"I liked the sour lemon!" Devika
"I liked the umami taste, it was a tomato." Louis
"I liked the honey." Raqeeb

Hillingdon Interfaith Visit
Hillingdon Interfaith visited the year 10 and 11 groups last Friday with their roadshow. Volunteers from the world's six biggest faith backgrounds talked about their central beliefs and backgrounds and presented the students with a hands-on experience. The theme for the day was 'All faiths can be friends'.

A Visit from the Fire Brigade
We were pleased to welcome representatives from the London Fire Brigade, who visited the school to speak with students about their vital role in keeping communities safe.
During the session, firefighters shared insights into their day-to-day responsibilities, the variety of incidents they respond to, and some fascinating history of the fire service. Students were particularly interested in hearing real-life experiences and learning about the teamwork and bravery required in such an important profession.
Unfortunately, the visit was cut short when the crew received an emergency call and had to respond immediately. Although their time with us was brief, students thoroughly enjoyed the session and gained valuable insight into the work of the fire brigade.

Sixth Form Students Take the Wheel
|
|
This week, a group of our Sixth Form students had the exciting opportunity to take part in real-life driving lessons as part of a pilot scheme delivered in partnership with Young Driver. The programme was designed to introduce students to the basics of driving in a safe, controlled environment, helping them begin to develop an essential life skill.
Under the guidance of a fully qualified instructor, students learned about vehicle control, road awareness, and the importance of responsible driving. For many, it was their first time behind the wheel, and the experience proved both educational and empowering.
The pilot was a great success, with positive feedback from students and staff alike. We are delighted with how well the programme was received and are already exploring plans to offer this opportunity again in the future.

Year 10 Visit To The Civic Centre
As part of Humanities / careers / world book week, Year 10 visited the civic centre in Uxbridge. We studied past and present maps of the local area and discussed how our area had changed. We then visited the museum where we discovered that a house in Hayes cost £675 in 1930!

Meadow High School Hello Youtube Channel
– Lots of Stories to enjoy!

Two new stories were posted on Monday 2 March:

Dear England Lessons in Leadership
by Gareth Southgate
read by Mr. Cunningham
This is a great book to explore whether you are an football fan or not. I can’t explain better than Gareth, ‘Many of us find ourselves called upon to be leaders at some point in our lives. Whatever meaning leadership has for you, I hope the stories I tell in these pages may resonate with your own experiences, and may even offer you some guidance.' Have a listen to Mr. Cunningham reading and see what you learn.

The Gruffalo
by Julia Donaldson
read by Mrs. Monaghan
This is another one of our favourite stories here in school – we have been told that we needed to add it to our YouTube channel! "A mouse took a stroll through the deep dark wood. A fox saw the mouse and the mouse looked good." Walk further into the deep dark wood, and discover what happens when the quick-thinking mouse comes face to face with an owl, a snake and a hungry gruffalo ... Mrs. Monaghan will tell you all about it!
