Weekly Bulletin

Issue 7 - Friday 23 October 2026

Dear Parents and Carers

The final week of a busy half-term is upon us and I would like to thank you all for the support you have given the school, the staff and the students since we returned from the Summer Break.  There have been some hurdles to overcome this half-term, the delay to the new building being the most notable, but there have been some amazing successes too.  Some prime examples include the recent trip to Jamie’s Farm, success in football tournaments, participation in Duke of Edinburgh.  Last week gave two further examples.  The Enterprise Team ran a successful Halloween Sale, and we also held a silent disco as part of our Show Racism The Red Card work.

Last week I also welcomed over twenty parents to my first coffee morning of the year.  It was great to see so many of you there, so I could provide you with feedback on what we have done in response to your voice.  These major changes relate to our school values, the four pathways in our new curriculum which are being delivered in lessons daily, the new code of conduct which asks students to focus on being ready to learn, aiming high and using kind words and deeds at all times.  We will unpack this with students when we return after the break.  We also discussed our new learning cycle that outlines how students will be taught at Meadow High School.  All of these changes have been contributed to by this parent group, and it is very reassuring to know that your voice and partnership with us is driving school improvement.

In my coffee morning, I also introduced the new Independent Learning Booklet that will be launched through form tutors after half-term.  This will initially be a pilot for Key Stage 3 students across both campuses.  A letter will be sent to parents outlining how this will work, and we will use tutor time and assemblies to launch it to students. We will then evaluate it moving forward towards next September.  (The link to the Independent Learning Booklet is in this bulletin).

This week the Under 16 football team also participated in a school tournament and showed great resilience, skill and sportsmanship in all their matches.  Well done to all those involved

That is all for this half term, other than to wish you all an enjoyable break.  I look forward to continuing to work with you when we return in November.

Independent Learning Booklet
Key Stage 3

Please find the link to the KS3 Independent Learning Booklet, developed in response to parent feedback regarding learning at home.

We are trialling the booklet across Key Stage 3 at both the Royal Lane and Northwood Road sites.

The aim of the booklet is to provide pupils and parents with practical learning, activities and ideas that build upon the knowledge and skills pupils develop in school, helping them to apply their learning in real-life, everyday situations.

Parents and carers are encouraged to adapt the activities to suit their child’s individual needs, either by extending the level of challenge or simplifying tasks where appropriate.

We would welcome parents and carers sharing photos or brief messages with the form teacher to celebrate and share the activities their children have completed at home.

Thank you for the support in helping to develop meaningful opportunities for learning beyond the classroom.

Boomerang Club

On Tuesday, we hosted another successful Boomerang Club, welcoming back our former pupils to share how they’re getting on!

It was lovely to hear all about their experiences and give our current students the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about college life, the courses available and what to expect after leaving school.

A huge thank you to all our ex-pupils for coming back to share their experiences.

Ms Carter
Phase Leader, KS5

Meadow High School Hello Youtube Channel
– Lots of Stories to enjoy!

Extended Learning:  Engaging with a range of stories provides lots of learning opportunities.  Please remember that we have our own YouTube channel where you’ll find a wide range of stories to enjoy. Listening to stories can help boost reading and language skills;

  • spark your imagination and stimulate curiosity
  • help your brain, social skills and communication skills develop
  • help learn new words as you read. Subconsciously, you will absorb information on how to structure sentences and how to use words and other language features effectively
  • help with developing an understanding of how to read, modelling pacing, proper intonation (using voice for expression) and correct pronunciation  whilst immersing children in stories
  • help develop comprehension skills – a crucial part of reading
  • help inspire a love of books and reading – a life-long learning tool

Here is a reminder of some of our favourite stories for October.

Goosebumps:

by R.L. Stine

Funny Bones
by Janet and Allan Ahlberg
                   read by Mrs. Mistry

This is how the story begins... “On a dark, dark hill there was a dark, dark town. In the dark, dark town there was a dark, dark street." A perfect choice for Halloween!

Sam Wu is NOT afraid of Zombies  by Katie & Kevin Tsang
read by Mr Cowley

There's hardly anything that Sam Wu is afraid of. Unless you count ghosts, sharks, the dark and maybe even spiders. But definitely NOT zombies. Except for actual real ones maybe...

Elmer
by David McKee

read and signed by Mrs. Sugden

This Elmer is different. Elmer is patchwork.

The grey elephants all love him, but he soon starts to wonder what it would be like to be just the same as them.  [This book was a student request!]

Revolting Rhymes
by Roald Dahl

read by Miss Green

Fairytales as you’ve never seen them before! Gruesome and grisly, dastardly and daring, these Revolting Rhymes turn familiar stories topsy-turvy.   Watch Miss Green’s video to find out more!

Northwood Road Campus News

KS5 held their Vocational "Goodies" sale on Thursday  morning.

Pupils worked hard to make items to sell, set up and serve customers. They had been practising with role plays earlier in the week and have been using their maths skills to add up the cost of items and give change with support. We were delighted to hear from our customers how impressed they were and how good the biscuits and cakes tasted!

Thank you to Mr Millard and his team for supporting us with making the shortbread in Food technology lessons.   We made over £55.00 !

Employability Skills

Students have been developing their employability skills by carrying out a range of tasks across different vocational pathways, with a particular focus on teamwork, communication, following instructions, and completing tasks efficiently. Throughout the lessons, all students demonstrated a positive attitude, worked very hard, and remained focused on the tasks set. Many thanks to all the staff who supported students' learning during these lessons, as well as the students for their great participation.
