Issue 28- Friday 28 April 2023

Dear Families

I hope this finds you all well during what is proving to be quite a disrupted half-term. With bank holidays and teachers strikes our pupils are having to cope with lots of change.

One of our aims as a school is to support pupils to learn to cope with the changes we all face in life. We start with routines and structures, use supports for planned changes and additional support for unexpected changes.

Being a person with additional needs was once described to me as 'feeling like being a square peg in a round hole'. Our job as educators is to support our pupils to become a little 'rounder' and able to cope with the 'square' moments in life!

Please don't forget that Monday 1st May is a bank holiday and that we will probably have another strike day on Tuesday 2nd May, when we will be open to pupils whose families cannot make safe alternative arrangements for them.

Very best wishes to you.

Mrs Rigby
Headteacher

Trip to Prestolite Electric, Greenford

Some of the Year 11 students visited a manufacturing company called Prestolite Electric, which make products for heavy-duty vehicles such as buses, tanks, agricultural vehicles and supply them to distributors in UK and many other countries. Students were welcomed by Mick Cooper (Operations Manager) and he explained the background of the company, its operations and different types of roles within company. Students had a great opportunity to tour the factory and saw various types of old and new machinery use in making different mechanical parts, how parts testing is carried out and how orders are dispatched to the customers.

After the tour, students participated in a practical activity to assemble the part of an alternator. A Prestolite apprentice demonstrated to students how to assemble the part and afterwards, they all followed the instructions provided to assemble that part. Throughout the visit, students were asking Mick relevant questions. Overall, students had a positive learning and work experience. Massive thanks to the team at Prestolite Electric and school staff who supported this trip.

Please see below details of an upcoming webinar regarding supported internships for 16-24 year olds with an EHCP.
Hillingdon PCF
On behalf of the Steering Committee

Hello Everyone, here’s a Supported Internships event that may be of interest to Forum folk and your wider parent carer communities – please feel free to share.

Supported internships are study programmes for young people, aged 16 to 24, who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and want to move into employment, but need some extra support.

The National Development Team for Inclusion (NDTi) are hosting a webinar for Parent Carer Forums and individual parents and who would like to learn more about Supported Internship on Thursday 18 May, 10.30am-12noon.  A flyer for the event is attached and you can book here: Spotlight on Supported Internships Tickets, Thu 18 May 2023 at 10:30 | Eventbrite

NDTi are leading the Internships Work project, funded by the Department for Education and every London Borough has now made a successful application for £50k+ funding to improve their supported internships offer.  We’ve been asked by Linda Jordan from NDTi to obtain feedback from London Forums about their local area’s progress in engaging with their Parent Carer Forum as a core requirement of this funding.  We’ve created a very short survey – even you haven’t heard anything about supported internships in your area it’s really important that we hear from you.  If you could please take a few minutes to complete the survey we’d really appreciate it: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/NDTiSIforForums  There is also an availability matrix so that we schedule our next catch up meeting with Linda when most Forums are able to attend.
