Issue 39 - Friday 15 July 2022

Dear Families

I am delighted to inform you of a fantastic accolade the school received last week.  Our careers programme won the best Greater London Authority Programme of the year award. We are so pleased that the work we have done and are doing to develop our careers program has been recognised at this level.

Linked to this is one of our next projects which will start in Autumn this year.
Our 6th form hall and the next door classroom are being converted into a kitchen and community cafe where our pupils can learn kitchen, hospitality and other transferable skills and all pupils can practice using money to purchase healthy, good value food and beverages.

Build Update

If you have visited Royal Lane recently you will have seen that the build team are busy on external works around playgrounds and car parking. These are still on track to be finished in time for the start of the next academic year!

A gentle reminder that families should not enter the site to drop off or pick up their child unless they have an agreed arrangement with the school. This would only be agreed if the child's mobility does not allow them to make the short walk into school or a risk assessment indicates it is not safe for the child to be dropped off and walked in.  If you are unsure and think this applies to your child, please speak to the Assistant Head for your child's team.

Farewell

We are saying some farewells next week.

Mr Rostom and Miss Jordan have both had short term contracts with us which are sadly ending. They have been great team members, and we thank them for all their support and wish them both well in their new posts.

Mr Brady and Mrs Mayall are both relocating and have new jobs closer to home.

Mrs Mayall joined us as Miss Nolan in 2015 and has been a member of the 6th Form team during that time. Mrs Mayall started our media course, has been responsible for Life and Living Skills and has run the 6th Form Council as well as numerous whole school charity events.  Mr Brady has been a team member since 2011. During that time he has been a Form Tutor from Year 7 to 11 and has been responsible for Geography and History.  His football skills have also been put to good use at breaks and lunchtimes!

We are also saying farewell to Miss Bhopal who started work at Meadow in 2005 as our History teacher.  Her passion for her subject (and dressing up) has engaged pupils across the years and to this day, history remains a very popular subject in school.  Miss Bhopal has run the School Council and yearly Children in Need / Comic Relief events which pupils love so much and her dedication to the school and commitment to supporting initial Teacher Trainees and Early Career Teachers has allowed Meadow to grow the outstanding team of teachers we have today. Miss Bhopal is going to a very lucky local special school to become their Deputy Headteacher, a role she is more than ready for.

I am sure you will join me in wishing all these staff a fond farewell and in wishing them the very best in the next chapter of their journeys.

Best wishes to you all for a beautiful weekend.

Kind regards,

Mrs J Rigby
Headteacher

Dear Families

As you know it is due to be exceptionally hot at the beginning of next week on Monday and Tuesday.

To look after pupils we have the following measures in place:
  1. Optional early pick up for pupils. Please email meadow@meadowhighschool.org to arrange this, you will not be able to collect your child without advance notice. It is the parent / carer's responsibility to notify school transport if you have collected your child early. Early pick up will be at 1.40pm.

  2. Optional early departure at 1.40 for independent travellers. Parents / carers, please email meadow@meadowhighschool.org if you give permission for your child to leave at this time. They will not be allowed to leave early without this permission.

INCLUSION QUALITY MARK (IQM)

On Wednesday of this week, we welcomed Tracey from the Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM) assessment team to our school. We have very proudly held an IQM award since 2015/16, and it is now time for its renewal. The renewal involves a process of reassessment.

To conduct this assessment, Tracey spent the entire day on the school site. She spoke to parents, governors, teachers, Teaching assistants, the leadership team and importantly, to our students. During the day, she collated evidence to support the 8 elements of the IQM Evaluative Framework – they include:

1.       Inclusion Values of the School

2.       Leadership, Management and Accountability

3.       Curriculum – structure, pupil engagement and adaptation

4.       Learner Progress and the Impact on Learning

5.       Assessment

6.       Behaviour, Attitudes to Learning and Personal Development

7.       Parents, Carers and Guardians

8.       Links with Local, Wider and Global Community

The 8 elements of the IQM frameworks demonstrate the necessity for inclusive practice in every area of our school community. As a result, this validates the prestige in holding the award.

Everyone works tirelessly to maintain inclusivity at Meadow, and Tracey witnessed this during her visit with us. A thank you to the parents and governors who gave their time to speak with her.

We received excellent feedback and look forward to being re-awarded the IQM accreditation.

Additionally, Mr Morgan has again successfully secured the silver quality award for School Games Mark. This has included the promotion of:

  • Participation - encouraging young people at school to engage in sporting activities.
  • Competition - Increasing the number of different sports that are being played and the competitions being entered
  • Workforce - increasing the number of pupils who are involved in leadership activities alongside taking part in competitions.
  • Clubs - increasing school links with clubs or establishments from the area.

In anticipation of next year and the drive for continuous improvement, I would like to welcome parent/carer feedback. If you have any suggestions on areas where you would like Meadow to develop, please contact myself and let me know your ideas – your thoughts and suggestions are valuable; the best way to contact me is via email which is detailed below.

I look forward to hearing from you

Ms Ahmed

CLASS 11JT WOULD LIKE YOUR HELP !

As part of the 11JT community project, our class has decided to collect food items for the local Give and Share.  We want to help people who are less fortunate and, because of the cost of living crisis, many people will struggle to feed themselves because of prices going up.

Please bring in any non-perishable food items and toiletries that you think would help people in need.  Please take them to Class 11JT.

The deadline to bring items into school is Wednesday the 20th July.

We hope you can support us in our community project.

Thank you !

Sixth Form Trip to Hyde Park

On Monday, 6th Formers made a journey into Hyde Park London. It was a super hot sunny day ? but we found a shady spot under a tree where we had a Pizza Hut picnic for lunch??

It was quiet in the park but we managed to collect data on the different ways people exercise!
We will be putting our results into a bar graph at school ??

France – May 2022!!!

Our France trip to Nice/Draguignan with the sixth form group was a memorable trip.  The trip was filled with lots of fun vocational activities such as art, catering, horticulture and many culture walks. The students were welcomed into the school and have made friends for life!

We arrived at Nice on day one where ate at a lovely French Cuisine and took a stroll through the beach during sundown. We visited the beach in the beautiful centre of Nice. We explored the streets full of markets and the students spoiled themselves with a bite to eat with waffles/pancakes and ice cream. From this we hopped onto a first class train on the way to Draguignan! We were welcomed by the lovely French team.

The next day we got ready for our day at school! We were welcomed by the French students with a song/dance and some lovely pastries. We took part in some vocational activities such as arts and crafts, which involved portrait painting with red wine. We also were shown how to be crafty with seeds/paper making; the students picked their own flowers from the garden to add. In the afternoon, we explored the Draguignan town and decided to do a hunt! We joined into teams and whoever found the most dragons won extra ice cream (Miss.Bhopal’s idea).  In the evening time, we joined some students/teachers where the students devoured on some more savoury/sweet crepes!

On another day, we all jumped onto a bus and took a trip to St. Raphael’s for a fun half a day at the beach. The students took part in team/sport activities with memory games and volleyball on the sand. We went on lots of strolls down the streets full of markets where we practised our French and discussed our favourite times so far. We visited the Town Hall where we met the mayor and had a lovely talk about the history of Draguignan.

One of the nicest activities was our visit to a vocational café, run solely by adults with SEN. They served us an amazing meal, and we were inspired by their services, and we are looking forward to adapt this amazing idea at Meadow, once our café is built!

On our last day full day at the school, the students were shown the catering kitchen. They were becoming chefs for the day and had to make lunch for everyone. The students prepped by putting on their apron and washing their hands. The French students welcomed them into the kitchen and helped them with some catering skills such as, chopping, cooking, slicing and pizza decorating. The students and teachers were very impressed! In the afternoon, we made our way into the activity halls where the students learned how to rock climb and play badminton. We then showed the French students how to dance some of UK’s iconic dances, like Candy! Overall, the students enjoyed their whole adventure in France. They made friends, learned new French words, tried new foods, new activities and independently worked as a team!

Prom Shop

The Meadow High School Prom Shop has been a huge success this year.  Students have been welcomed into the Pop Up Shop to choose what they would like to wear to the Prom. All items for the Prom Shop have been generously donated for use by our students. We have been able to provide beautiful dresses with all the necessary accessories and shoes for our female customers, and suits, shirts and ties for many of the boys.

"A Night Under Stars" themed Prom  took place on Thursday 14 July and we hope to have some photos to add to next week's Bulletin.

Summer Reading Challenge 2022!

Friday 22nd July - Monday 5th September 2022

To help our students keep learning and avoid the summer 'dip' that can happen in their skills, we are running a Summer Reading Challenge.  The aim is to encourage our students to develop a love of reading and an understanding of why building their reading skills is important.

We will be issuing all students with a 'Reading Passport' to help them track when they use their reading skills. Please help your child to identify a reading challenge target to work on - this can be anything that works for your child and your family situation. The text on the passport says:

Q. Why should I read, it’s my summer break?!

A. That’s easy to answer!

Reading WILL help you ...

  • do well in school
  • get a better understanding of yourself and others
  • learn new things
  • build skills that will help you be more independent in life beyond school
  • people who read regularly say it helps them feel good.

Avoid the summer reading ’dip’ - set yourself a reading challenge now!

You could...

  • read at least 3 books
  • visit your local library at least twice
  • read at least twice every week
  • research to find out something new (tell someone what you found out, make a project to share)
  • use your reading skills for practical tasks

Tell us about what you have read or how you have used your reading skills this summer—email asugden@meadowhighchool.org. We will keep a log and award certificates in September!

Please encourage your child to take part. Listening and talking about stories counts too, there are loads of different websites for this depending on your child's developmental stage - remember we have a range of stories on our school youtube channel too!  We're sure you will work out your own reward system, however Mrs. Sugden will be keeping an eye on her emails if logging achievements with us is a good incentive - photos of your child using their reading skills (that you would be happy to have displayed on our website) would be welcome too!

Please ensure your child brings their Reading Passport back to school in September, their new Form Tutor will be keen to see how they have done!

[Spare copies of the Reading Passport will be available to print off on the website in case you need more boxes or the passport goes missing.]

Very best wishes for a wonderful summer break.
