Weekly Bulletin - Issue 33 - Friday 11 June 2021

Issue 33 - Friday 11 June 2021

Dear Families,

This week, it has felt like we left school for half term in the Winter and have returned after the break to Summer!   We are generally coping well with the sudden change in heat but would appreciate it if you could:

  • make sure your child has a reusable water bottle for use in school (please clearly label this!)

  • a sun hat to wear whilst outside (again, label this please!!)

  • they apply sunscreen before leaving home or have some with them that they are able to apply (we can supervise but generally staff can't apply sunscreen and as always, label!!!))

  • make sure your child is not coming to school overdressed with a winter coat.  If they need outer wear it should be a lighter weight coat, jacket or raincoat (and you guessed it, labelled!!!!)

  • make sure pupils who suffer from hayfever take their medication at home before coming to school. They may also benefit from wearing sunglasses when they are outside, as this helps to stop pollen and dust from entering the eyes.  A peaked cap is also good as it stops pollen and dust from drifting down onto the face (and also keeps the sun off!)
Covid

There have been no confirmed cases of Covid in our community since the last bulletin.

Please continue to take twice weekly Lateral Flow Tests and report any positive cases to us.

Thank you for not sending your child into school and getting them to take a PCR test if they show any of the following symptoms:
  • High temperature
  • A new persistent cough
  • A loss of taste and/or smell
  • A runny nose, persistent headache, shortness of breath and/ or vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
Return to a Pre-Covid timetable!

I am delighted to report that, after 15 months, we have had our first week where pupils have been moving about the school as they would have done pre-covid.
The slight changes that remain obviously include the one way system, front facing desks and slightly shortened lesson lengths which have allowed us to continue staggered breaks and lunchtimes.  I have been extremely impressed at how well pupils have transitioned back to doing this.   Of course for our Year 7 pupils, this has been their first experience of moving more widely about the school and they have done magnificently!  Well done to all of you.

I must also extend my thanks to teachers who have been moving resources around the school for two and a half terms, to TAs who have been rock solid pupil support in tutor bases and to our wonderful Therapy Team, who have stepped in and supported in so many ways. I'm sure you are all happy to return to more normal working!

Assembly

This week we learned about Pride month. The messages of Pride are fantastic ones 'Celebrate who you are' and 'Equal rights for everyone'. This is something we are very passionate about here at Meadow as so many of our pupils could be subject to discrimination just for being who they are.  In the words of Elliot Page "This world would be a whole lot better if we just made an effort to be less horrible to one another".  As I said in the assembly, you don't necessarily have to believe the same or agree with other people's choices but you must be tolerant and never make people feel bad for being true to themselves.

Exams

As you know, the vast majority of external accreditation has been done this year via Teacher Assessed Grades.  Miss Caddell and our Faculty Leaders have done amazing work to ensure that pupils have not only had the very best opportunities to evidence the level they are working at but have also been meticulous in moderating grades across subjects to ensure accurate and fair grading.

There have been a few exams however, some of which were taken this week for Functional Skills Mathematics Level 1 and Functional Skills English Level 1 and Level 2.  Congratulations to the pupils who were involved in these for their calm and mature approach to the exams.   We are So proud of you!

May I wish you all a very well deserved weekend.

Best wishes

Mrs J Rigby
Headteacher

Dear Students:

Well done to our students who have begun sitting their exams this week.  As a school community, we are extremely proud of your resilience, dedication and hard work that you have put in. It has been an extremely disrupted 12 months due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and we couldn't be more impressed with your attitude to your studies.

We have no more exams after this week, with our last one finishing on Friday 11th June.

While exams are an important part of school life, we know that you all are so much more than the grades on a paper. You are kind, helpful, resilient and just lovely people to be around. Some of you speak two or more languages, play instruments, coach sport or are amazing older siblings. You help each other every day and it shows. You have all had difficulties to overcome to achieve this and we think you are amazing!

Well done - from all at Meadow!

their Review at this time.

Medical

If your child is suffering with hay fever and takes antihistamine to help relieve their symptoms whilst it is the hotter season, medication must be given at home before they leave for school.   We can only give medication in school if it has been prescribed by the child's GP and we are required to follow the dosages prescribed.

Thank You.
Alison Wallington - Welfare Team.

Racism

6th Form's Assembly Focus last week was on Racism.  We spoke about the anniversary of George Floyd, the Black Lives Matter Movement and how we could make changes in our community.

You can see the assembly PowerPoint here:   Racism Powerpoint

As a whole school, we currently have an Equality Working Party that meets regularly to address, make changes,  and continue to educate our young people. Please look at the following links with your children to continue to embed our ethos of anti-racist establishment:

What would you do? Are a great resource for challenging racism in a range of situations suitable for most students:

Project SEARCH is a partnership venture between Meadow High School and Marriott Heathrow that prepares young people with learning difficulties and disabilities for competitive employment. Several students from Meadow High School have gone on to be successful at seeking employment and gaining real life experience working on a supported internship.

The DfE recently attended a virtual tour of Project Search and were impressed with the programme after talking to our current cohort of students, Marriott staff and parents involved.

Project Search is available to anyone aged 17-24 with an EHCP plan.

News and Events in the Community

Schools have been asked to circulate the information below to parents by Hannah Ives - Hillingdon Child Protection Advisor to Schools and Deputy LADO

Dear Parent/Guardian/Carer

Recent reports from Public Health of England show increased presence of cannabis edibles and THC vaping consumption among young people. It is a new trend and something which parents might not be aware of.

SORTED (Substance Use and Misuse Programmes for young people) in collaboration with the Safer Schools’ Police Officers team will be holding a FREE online information session on Friday the 25th of June at 10.00 am to raise awareness, advising how you might spot the signs a young person may have consumed cannabis products and what support is available.

To book your place on this online session, please, email SORTED team sorted@hillingdon.gov.uk

Kind regards
Ania Frejlich-Botha
