Weekly Bulletin - Issue 27 - Friday 23 April 2021

Issue 27 - Friday 23 April 2021

Dear Families,

I hope this finds you all well.  We were delighted to welcome back staff and pupils who had been shielding upto the end of March.  Whilst we are still being extremely careful on site, it is lovely to feel things gradually getting back to normal!

Covid

We have had no confirmed cases of Covid in our community since the last bulletin.

Testing

For those pupils whom have home testing kits, please continue to complete two a week and log the results on the NHS system.

You only need to notify the school if your child has a positive result.

We do have some Lateral Flow Test kits in school, so should the home test indicate a positive you can either book a test at a walk in centre or arrange to come to school to collect a kit.

If you have not previously given permission for your child to have rapid testing in school and then at home, but would now like to do so, please complete the online permission form.

Exams

As you may be aware, most externally accredited courses have opted not to have exams this summer. The exception to this, for our school, is Functional English and Functional Mathematics exams which are still scheduled to happen in person in June.

The number of pupils taking these exams are small and we have strong plans in place to allow pupils to take the exams, and for staff to invigilate and support in the exams, in a Covid secure setting.  Letters will be sent home next week to those pupils sitting these exams.

Build

Over the Easter break I visited our new building with a group of staff. The Build Team is now completing the construction of the individual internal rooms and spaces, so have got a really good sense of just how big the building will be! Our first pupil group from our Scout troop will be visiting the site in the next few weeks. This is under strict Health and Safety procedures and will include being provided with steel toe cap boots, high viz clothing, a hard hat and safety goggles. Whilst on site the pupils and staff supporting them will be escorted by the three senior on site members of the build team.

Assembly

Assembly this week was about being patient. We watched a really interesting experiment which looked at children and whether they are able to wait for a treat (or not!).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yo4WF3cSd9Q

We also looked at situations and people that might make us impatient and how we could develop our patience.

We also finished the assembly with a lovely thought from one of our Year 9 pupils, Rafia

“Butterflies can't see their wings.
They can't see how truly beautiful they are,
but everyone else can.
People are like that as well.”

Thanks Rafia for sharing this lovely thought with us all.

Very best wishes to you and your family,

Mrs J Rigby
Headteacher

Duke of Edinburgh

We are greatly saddened to hear of the loss of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award’s Patron and Founder, His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh, and our thoughts are with The Queen and his family.

The Duke had a lifelong commitment to inspiring, empowering and developing young people, and in setting up The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, he has helped transform the lives of millions of young people worldwide.

In the UK alone, 6.7 million young people have benefitted from taking on the personal challenge of a DofE Award, setting themselves up with the skills, confidence, and resilience to make the most out of life and make a difference to the world around them.

In the 65 years since His Royal Highness founded the charity, the need for the DofE has never been greater, with young people facing unprecedented challenges and an uncertain future due to COVID-19.

The DofE will continue the remarkable legacy of His Royal Highness, working to make sure that all young people – and especially those from marginalised groups – can benefit from the better educational outcomes, employment prospects, community ties and stronger mental health the DofE can help support.

At Meadow High School, our Pathway 1 pupils currently undertake the Duke of Edinburgh Award, allowing them to explore new activities, skills and undertake expeditions which enrich the curriculum and help support towards independence.

For further information about the Duke of Edinburgh Award please visit  https://www.dofe.org/

Friends of Meadow
Annual General Meeting

The Friends of Meadow AGM will be held via Zoom video conference at 1.40pm on Tuesday 4 May 2021.  If you've never been able to make it to a Friends of Meadow (our Parent Teacher Association) meeting before, or are not sure what it's all about, this could be your chance to find out!

There will be some formalities we need to go through, as it's the Annual General Meeting.  Following that, there will be a chance to have a chat about what we have done and what we plan to get up to, to help our school.  As last year, you'll need to supply your own tea and biscuits, but we hope to meet up in the new building next school year.  We'll just need to be careful not to drop any crumbs on the new carpet.

If you'd like to attend our on-line AGM, please drop me an email, goodbodyjg@yahoo.co.uk , and I'll send you joining details.

John Goodbody
Secretary, Friends of Meadow

Miss Barham would like you all to meet Edith and Beatrice our new therapy bunnies!

Pet therapy sessions are starting again this week for whole classes or 1:1 sessions with our students!

The bunnies are looking forward to lots of cuddles!

National Survey of Children:
The Big Ask

The new Children’s Commissioner for England, Dame Rachel de Souza, has today launched The Big Ask – the largest ever consultation with children aged 4 to 17 in England. It aims to find out children’s concerns and aspirations about the future, so that we can put children at the heart of our country’s recovery from the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

All schools are encouraged to support their pupils to complete this survey. A range of teaching resources have also been produced, including lesson plans and activity packs, to help teachers incorporate this into their lessons.

Parents, care leavers and those working with children are also invited to complete the adult survey to share their views about the future for children and young people today, and what they think is holding young people back.

The results from this survey will help the Children’s Commissioner identify the barriers preventing children from reaching their potential, put forward solutions and set ambitious goals for the country to achieve.

Government Review Into Sexual Abuse In Schools

You may have heard about, and been deeply troubled by recent reports of, the sexual abuse and harassment young people have suffered at school and in the community that have come to light recently.  Sexual abuse in any form is abhorrent and it is vital that these allegations are dealt with properly. We are taking immediate action:

  • A new NSPCC dedicated helpline will provide support and guidance to any victims of sexual abuse in schools. This includes how to contact the police and report crimes if they wish.

  • Ofsted will undertake an immediate review of safeguarding policies in state and independent schools. The review will look at the extent and the severity of the issue and ensure schools have appropriate processes in place to allow pupils to report concerns freely, knowing these will be taken seriously and dealt with swiftly and appropriately.

Young people and adults can contact the NSPCC helpline on 0800 136 663.

For parents' information:

Offensive Weapons Act 2021

The Offensive Weapons Act surrender and compensation scheme ran from 10
December 2020 to 9 March 2021 and is now closed. This now means that you will not be able to possess certain knives and weapons anywhere, even at home.

These include flick knifes, zombie knives, curved swords, batons, and knuckle dusters. This change has been brought about by the Government’s Offensive Weapons Act designed to increase public safety by reducing knife crime. This and further information can be found on the link below:

WE ARE STILL COLLECTING EMPTY CRISP PACKETS TO HELP THE HOMELESS

We have been contacted by a parent of an ex-Meadow pupil about a scheme on the Help the Homeless Hillingdon facebook page, asking for donations of empty crisp packets, which will then be ironed together to make blankets for the homeless.

There will be a box in school Reception to collect any empty crisp packets you may like to donate.   Any donations will be passed on to the people organising the scheme.

What a great way of recycling !

Update:   Several large bags full of crisp packets have now been collected at Meadow and Tille (ex Meadow Sixth Form pupil) and her family have kindly taken to them to a collection point in Hillingdon where the blankets are ironed together.    We will continue collecting some more packets this term !
