Important Update

In the news yesterday it was announced that London's risk rating was increased to Tier 2.

Whilst this will have very limited impact on Meadow as a school community, the government guidance relating to Meadow is that all staff and pupils should wear face coverings when moving round the school, but not in the classroom.  Unless your child is unable to wear a face covering, please can you ensure that they bring a face mask to school everyday.  If they cannot wear a face mask please let their form tutor know this.

We are happy for face covering to be colourful and appealing, but they should not be offensive to anyone or likely to frighten or intimate other pupils.  If a face covering is washable, we recommend that you buy several different coverings so that they can be changed everyday.  In school we will help pupils to learn how to safely wear, put on and remove face coverings.  A small bag or pouch to store the face mask in when not being worn would be helpful especially if this can be clipped onto your child's clothing.  Please put your child's name on the inside of their mask(s) to help ensure that it doesn't go missing.

Dear Families

This has been a busy week for everyone with so much going on in school and on the site.

As I walk around the school I am very proud of the work going on in Bubbles.  As you know, our focus has been to transition pupils successfully back to school, to help them to re-engage with others, to address their concerns and fears, to get them re-used to the structure of a school day and to help them learn all the new skills they need to cope with a world where Covid is present.  Seeing the creativity of staff and pupils has been inspiring and I am very glad that we extended our class based Bubbles up to the October half term, as many of our pupils are still processing 'lockdown' and the change and impact this had for them.

I will be sharing an updated Covid Response Risk Assessment next week on our website and next week's bulletin will have more information for you on what school will be like for pupils on their return on 2nd November, after the half term break.

Covid

We have had no confirmed cases within our community this week.

A reminder on what to do if your child has suspected symptoms:

  1. Do not send them into school.

  2. They should isolate at home for the appropriate amount of time and preferably have a  test booked for them.

  3. If you cannot book a test contact the school attendance team.

  4. Pupils CANNOT return to school until the isolation period has ended or we have been provided evidence of a negative test result.

Thank you in anticipation of your support.

Assembly

This week Mr Hornal, one of our KS5 teaching assistants, 'Braved the Shave' for Macmillan cancer support.  During the assembly I took the opportunity to look at the fantastic work the Macmillan nurses do and why they exist.  Discussing topics like cancer is never easy as it is an emotive subject for many of us.  My key messages to pupils were:

  • everyone gets ill at some point in their life and for some people this might be with cancer.

  • lots of people recover from cancer, just as they do from other illnesses.

We looked at the science of cancer and then the signs and symptoms that could indicate something is not right.  I was careful to stress that having any of the signs and symptoms does not mean the person definitely has cancer, but that the pupil should always tell a trusted adult so that they can arrange a doctor's appointment.

Thank you to Mr Hornal for not only entertaining us, but raising money for such a worthwhile cause.

Thank you to Ms Lennon for sharing her personal story with us and for shaving Mr Hornal's head!

Thank you to 11AM and DL for being such a good assembly audience and participators.

11AM:  Callan, Jayden, Oscar, Kaine, Rokas, Alishba, Safwan, Uvejs, Aaron

DL:  Sam, Nistlerooy, Nadir, Lacey, Erin, Mehreen, Stacey, Danyal, Kian, Paul

Pumpkins

I have had great fun watching Bubble groups this week hunting for the pumpkins that are hidden about the site.  As there is one in my office window I have had lots of little visitors looking in on me and bringing a smile to my face.

Thanks to everyone who created the pumpkins and Miss Nolan for organising this fun event.

Build

Our attenuation tank (rainwater collection tank) is now built and is currently disappearing back under soil and turf on the school field.

The site of the new build is having the underground work completed and we have been told that the steel frame will start to be erected mid-November. This is likely to be the noisiest part of the whole build as there will be metal cutting involved. We have ordered additional ear defenders which we will allocate to pupils who need them.  If your child makes you aware that they are struggling due to the sound of the build, please let the Form Tutor know so ear defenders can be issued.

Many thanks to you for your support and feedback, all of which have helped us immensely!

Best wishes for a great weekend.

Headteacher

Parents - Please be aware of a new council notice outside school !

Just to make parents aware of a public notice the council have recently placed outside the school which might indicate an intention to to increase their patrols in the area or use footage from the camera to prosecute offenders.

Parents may not be aware that the council have placed a camera near the crossing and that stopping or parking on the zigzag area is an offence that could result in points on their licence.

Class LD went on the pumpkin hunt around school that Miss Nolan organised.  They had a great time searching for the pumpkins and showed how fantastic their counting skills were!

Jeans for Genes - Non Uniform Day

Wear your Jeans to school (or any comfortable non-uniform clothes) for a donation of £1.00 for charity.

Money raised will go to support the annual Jeans for Genes Day, which raises funds for the charity Genetic Disorders UK.

We will also be donating a percentage of the funds raised to Heathrow Special Needs Farm, who were recently badly affected by flooding.   Heathrow Special Needs Farm have been very supportive of our pupils over a number of years. They allow us to use their premises to take pupils to do pathways work and also work experience.

Halloween Event

Wednesday 21 October
& Thursday 22 October

I am excited to be hosting our yearly Halloween event again!

This event will take place over two days on Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd of October.  Students can bring money in on the day that their class has their allocated time slot.

There will be games and a spooky sweet sale at the cost of 20p.  Cakes will be 50p each.  We will be providing ‘free from’ snacks for those with allergies.

We have had to spread this Halloween event over two days so each bubble can have a ten-minute slot ensuring the correct cleaning between classes.

Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions, we will not be face painting this year.

A letter has been sent home with details of timeslots - click here to read the full letter with timeslots.

Help With Fuel Bills

If you, or someone you care for, is disabled or receives a disability benefit, then you or they could be entitled to financial help with energy bills. There are varying levels of support and availability for those who need it.

Here is a list of schemes designed to help get cheap gas and electricity for disabled and vulnerable customers.

What are social energy tariffs?

Social tariffs are regulated so that you pay no more than a company’s lowest available plan. Energy suppliers may provide a social tariff for vulnerable customers, which can include people with disabilities. If your disability benefit is not quite stretching to cover your energy bills and you are finding it hard to pay, you should contact your supplier and ask about their social tariff. They will ask for some details from you that will help them identify whether or not you’re eligible, then talk you through the process from there.

What is the Warm Home Discount Scheme?

If you, or someone you care for, is finding it difficult to keep warm in winter, you or they may be eligible for the Warm Home Discount scheme, which you could help get you a significant discount on your energy bill. Call 0845 603 9439 for further information.

If entitled, the saving is taken from your electricity bill between the winter months of October and March, instead of being paid directly to you.

What are Cold Weather Payments?

If a period of particularly cold weather has hit your area recently, you could be entitled to Cold Weather Payments. The cold weather must last for seven days or more, with an average temperature of 0°c or lower.

Cold Weather Payments are determined by The Department for Work and Pensions and are added automatically to the benefits of people who are eligible within 14 days after the cold spell. If you’re eligible to receive the payment you should get them sent automatically with your benefit allowance.

What is the Fuel Direct Scheme?

If you struggle to manage payments for your energy bills and have gotten into debt, you can contact your energy supplier about the Fuel Direct Scheme. Fuel Direct can aid energy bill management for those receiving state help by taking outstanding debt, in parts, automatically from their benefit payments.

If you are in doubt about any of your entitlements concerning disability discount on utility bills, you should make it a priority to call your energy supplier. They will be able to give you all the information you need. They often offer those who are disabled help with energy bills. You can also find out more at GOV.UK.

If you are struggling to find the money for bills, it could be you’re simply paying too much for your energy – in which case, it’s time to switch to a better deal. Pop your postcode in the box at the top of the page, to run and instant energy comparison and find a cheaper tariff.

If you have a prepayment meter installed, it could be worth swapping it for a credit meter, as this offers a cheaper way to pay for your energy. For more information see our prepayment meter page.

Carry out annual gas safety checks

If you, or someone you care for, is claiming disability benefits, then you or they could also be entitled to a free gas safety check. A gas safety check ensures that all of your gas appliances – boiler, cooker, fire, etc – are working correctly and safely. They are usually carried out once a year. Contact your gas supplier to find out if you could receive these check-ups for free.

E-Safety Focus

There are a lot of games, apps and websites which our children can access online. The National Online Safety website aims to provide information to help parents keep up to date with what is available and help keep children safer on line.   We will share some of the tips from National Online Safety each week.   More E-Safety information and tips can be found on the school website PARENTS / E-SAFETY
