Issue 4 - Friday 27 September 2024

Dear Families,

Assembly

This week was the National Cycle to School Week. We used this as the inspiration for our whole school assembly, which focused on cycling safety.

Here are some key points that were discussed with the pupils:
  • Having the correct equipment, which should include a well-fitted helmet

  • Being seen by wearing bright, high visibility and / or reflective clothing

  • Maintaining the bike including having front and rear reflectors, front and rear lights, oiling the chain, having working brakes and pedals, the height of the handlebars and saddle and the correct tyre pressure.

  • Checking that the bike is still the correct size for the rider

  • Where are the safest places to ride

  • Road safety
If your child hasn't already completed a cycling proficiency course, please look out for the next one that will be hosted at school.

Build Update

Some of you may be aware from the news that a large building company, ISG,  has gone into administration. Unfortunately for us, this was the building company working on our two projects. At this moment, both projects have stopped, and we are awaiting further information from the Local Authority and Department for Education about what will happen next. What we can assume is that neither project will be completed within the expected timeframes.

At Meet the Tutor evening, we will still be hosting our Pathway 1 / Northwood Road sessions regarding next steps, BUT this will now have a few ifs, buts and maybes as there is now some uncertainty around timelines.

I hope all Pathway 1 / Northwood Road families will attend a session.

Certificates

I was delighted to hand out several certificates in assembly this week for pupils across the school.

The first of these acknowledged the hard work and progress that the pupils were making in their English lessons.

We also had three Most Improved certificates for pupils who have made significant improvement in any area of school life, from attendance and punctuality, through relationships and behaviour to effort and progress.

This week we had two Pupil of the Week certificates where pupils have shown outstanding effort or achievement over a significant period of time.

As the term progresses, more and more pupils will have their hard work and progress recognised. We are also happy to present certificates that pupils have gained out of school e.g. swimming, music etc. Simply send in the certificate, and we will send it back to you after the assembly.

Allotment

You may have seen the video of our new allotment site on Instagram. We are looking for any tarpaulins that people might be willing to donate so that once we've cleared an area, we can cover it and hopefully stop the weeds from growing back!  If you do have a tarpaulin that you can donate, please send it to school in a carrier bag for the attention of Miss Willis or Mrs Rigby. We'll keep you updated on our progress and will be asking for volunteers to support us once we are up and running.

Have a great weekend.

Kind regards,
Mrs J Rigby
Headteacher

Updates to
Medical Policy and Practices

Dear Parents

We are updating our school medical policy and practices to ensure that we are fully compliant with all the current government guidance.  Over the next few weeks, if your child has any medication in school, you will get an email or letter asking you to confirm in writing that you give the school permission to administer this medication.  From now on, we will ask you to do this every year, and we will not be able to give any non-emergency medications (prescription or non-prescription) without this written permission. This includes any medication administered in school on a daily basis.  So please keep an eye on emails or send a letter to school to give us written permission.

We will also ask permission annually to administer any emergency
medication we hold.
However, in the event of a medical emergency, we would administer this medication so long as we have the prescription label that the medication has on it from the chemist/pharmacy and an NHS care plan.

If you are sending any prescription medication into school, it has to arrive in school with the label that the chemist sticks on it, so please send it in the box if it comes in a box.  We cannot administer any prescription medication without seeing this label - please note this includes emergency medication.  We can only give pupils antibiotics and other prescription medication in line with what it says on this label.  Changes to this can occasionally be made if supported by a letter from an appropriate qualified medical professional, e.g. if a dose is changed or the time the medication is taken is changed.

There will be further changes in how we manage medication and medical conditions in schools over the next few weeks, so please keep an eye on the bulletin for this important information.

If you have any concerns or worries about any of these changes please contact kwalsh@meadowhighschool.org to discuss.

Many thanks

Elmer by David McKee

read and signed by Mrs. Sugden.

This Elmer is different. Elmer is patchwork.

The grey elephants all love him, but he soon starts to wonder what it would be like to be just the same as them.   [This book is a student request!]

Revolting Rhymes by Roald Dahl

read by Miss Green.

Fairytales as you’ve never seen them before! Gruesome and grisly, dastardly and daring, these Revolting Rhymes turn familiar stories topsy-turvy.

Watch Miss Green’s video to find out more!
