Issue 39 - Friday 19 July 2024

Dear Families

As I reflect on this academic year, here are some of the highlights and successes I would like to share with you:
  1. We have less pupils with severe persistent absences, and we are working with all families to increase attendance for all pupils. Our current whole school average is 86.2%. Please support us to get this to our goal of 92% for next year!

  2. There is a pleasing increase in the number of pupils with 100% attendance for at least one term, with Autumn 2023 at 14, Spring 2024 at 42 and Summer 2024 at 14. Thank you to all of you and your families.  Lets all work together to increase the number of pupils achieving this and the number of 100% attendance prizes we give out at the end of each term!  NB. We will be introducing rewards next year for pupils who achieve 95% and 100% for a whole year.

  3. There has been a significant decrease in the number of suspensions. Thank you to all the pupils, families and staff who have worked so hard together to support our young people to co-regulate or self-regulate their behaviour.

  4. Pupils are engaging more closely with their PLIM targets and making more steps of progress towards their EHCP outcomes.
     ????????????????

  5. We have successfully changed over to our new phonics programs and pupils are engaging well with these and showing improvements in their reading skills.

  6. We now have our first EVER cohort of 13 pupils working towards their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.

  7. Several successful residential trips took place to Germany, Devon, Centre Parcs, Paccar and we had our first school sleepover.

  8. We have introduced new accreditation for Food Technology and Computing.

  9. We held more parent engagement sessions and coffee mornings and are planning even more for next year.

  10. Thanks to Mr Anstee and other staff for providing a huge amount of lunchtime clubs and expanding our after-school club opportunities.

  11. The range of enrichment activities on a Friday afternoon has been increased and more pupils received their first or second choice of activity each term.

  12. We have had lots of pupils volunteering to perform in whole school assemblies.

  13. Our second Flair, anti-racism survey showed that the work we have undertaken over the past two years is having the desired impact. BUT like always, we can do more and better, so please look out for the ongoing work we will be continuing with next year.
I hope you agree with me that all of these should be celebrated.

Thank you to all our wonderful families, pupils and staff for making the school community a great place to learn, grow, develop and work.

Very best wishes for a sunny weekend!

Kind regards

Mrs J Rigby
Headteacher

Local Safeguarding Concern

We have been made aware by the local safeguarding team that there has been an adult male posing as a child on Snapchat. He has been wearing a school uniform and contacting girls via the App. Currently, the age of the girls being contacted are 13-14 years old.

Police are aware and through evidence, he is known to be meeting with girls and buying them gifts, food, vapes and providing them with Uber credit to travel around. There have also been allegations of sexual assault.

We are asking parents, carers and families to be vigilant in terms of any conversations you have heard or hear in the future that are of concern or any disclosures of this nature. If you have any concerns of this nature, please contact the Police and / or the Stronger Families Hub.

If you are at all worried about online sexual abuse or the way someone has been communicating with you or your child online please follow this link for support and guidance CEOP Safety Centre.

Kind regards

Sixth Form Drama Performance

The 6th form Drama class performed their own script this week.

They created a sequel to the movie 'Stardust' and developed their characters' storylines whilst working on their voice work. The cast ensured they remembered their own lines and worked well as part of a team.

Great work!

Class 10LD Bowling Trip

On Thursday 11 July, 10LD went bowling and Pizza Hut courtesy of Chris achieving the Jack Petchey Award.  We had a lovely competitive day out.  Many 'strikes' were made and following bowling, once the class had built up an appetite, the class ate as much Pizza as they could manage!  Pizza Hut staff commended our boys as being 'the best school group they had ever had'!

Class AP - Trip to Pizza Hut

Class AP went on a trip to Pizza Hut on Tuesday, 16 July.

Students had the opportunity to practice their independence by picking and ordering food. They also continued to develop their social skills such as communication and active listening as they had to interact not only with their teachers and classmates, but also with staff at Pizza Hut.  All pupils showed excellent behaviour and have had loads of fun!

Class IM - Trip to the Zoo

On Tuesday 16 July, Class IM went to Whipsnade zoo. All the pupils had a fantastic time trying to spot different animals around the zoo. They liked the giraffes, the elephants and penguins the most. They enjoyed having their snack and lunch at the zoo, but complained about the walk! On the way back to school everyone enjoyed having a little nap, except the driver!
