Meadow High School Careers Strategy

Meadow High has a holistic approach to its careers programme and is designed to meet the needs of all students to help them with:

  • Independence skills
  • Vocational pathways
  • Supported internships
  • Employer engagement
  • Work experience
  • Business enterprise programme
  • Preparation for work (World of Work)
  • Transition

We work in partnership with Education Development Trust, Shaw Trust, Marriott Hotel, JobCentre Plus and the Local Authority. Our independent careers adviser, qualified to level 6/7 is available to all students. Parents/guardians are actively encouraged to attend careers meetings and are invited into school to meet the local providers/colleges and employers.

We offer a differentiated work related curriculum from year 8 to year 14 where the students learn about the world of work including: understanding different job roles; learning about health and safety at a workplace; preparing for interviews; creating CV’s; understanding work relationships and language at work; learning about teamwork, problem solving and communication; knowing your rights and responsibilities at work; exploring job opportunities and preparing for work experience.

Providers' Access Policy

Pupil entitlement:

All pupils in years 7-14 are entitled to:

  • find out about technical education qualifications and apprenticeships opportunities, as part of a careers programme which provides information on the full range of education and training options available at each transition point;
  • hear from a range of local providers about the opportunities they offer, including technical education and apprenticeships – through options events, assemblies, group discussions, coffee mornings and taster events;
  • understand how to make applications for the full range of academic and technical courses.

As it deems appropriate for our pupils, the school will provide meaningful encounters with employers and educational providers including, a minimum of two encounters with providers of technical education in each Key Stage.

Management of provider access requests procedure:

A provider wishing to request access should contact our Careers’ team:

Mrs A. Fabisch - Careers Leader

Mrs S. Stock - Careers Advisor, Work Experience Coordinator, KS5 Transition Officer

Mrs S. Khaboo - Lead Job Coach

Phone: 01895443310, ext. 244

The school will work with providers in order to identify the most effective opportunity for them to share information about education and training opportunities.

Careers Department Mission Statement

At MHS we do more than just help our students gain qualifications. We are preparing them for independence and all that it entails. We are committed to raising standards of attainment and providing students with the skills needed to progress successfully into further education, employment, and adult life.

We want our pupils to be able to fulfill their potential and prepare for life after Meadow. This includes delivering a breadth of opportunities and experiences that our pupils can start to build their own future pathways on. As we aim to do this, we are also fully aware of the impact the difficulties our pupils have due to the nature of their needs and we look to how we can start to overcome these barriers, working alongside our pupils and their families.

INTENT:

What will our pupils experience throughout their careers curriculum at Meadow?

● Access to work related learning from Year 7 onwards - learning that is linked through their curriculum provision and also explicitly delivered sessions i.e through DWP

● Engagement with different employers and providers in a variety of formats such as assemblies, visits, talks, project work, careers events, Employers’ Evenings, Enterprise Days, Vocational Pathways, Work Experience, Supported Internship

Why do we want this?

● We want our pupils to know their skills and strengths; know what they are good at, what they find hard and how they can managed their difficulties

● We want our pupils to work towards independent living and/or working

● We want them to have hope and optimism, sense of purpose, adaptability and resilience

● We want our pupils to have access to, and engagement in, decent work - voluntary or paid

● We want our pupils to learn and make progress so they can thrive and experience success in their future pathways

● We want our pupils to pursue and value their own wellbeing and happiness

● We want our pupils to be fully informed about different career pathways

IMPLEMENTATION:

How will we deliver this?

● Pupils’ access to a careers curriculum from Year 7 onward which will be regularly monitored and evaluated to ensure it is fit for purpose.
