Black History Month - October 2021

At Meadow High School, we have been celebrating Black History Month, with assemblies, lessons and workshops.

Week 4-8 October 2021

In assembly this week we celebrated the amazing life of Betty Campbell. Betty was one of the first female teacher trainees in Wales and went on to become the first black Headteacher in Wales.  She was passionate about multiculturalism and ensuring that all young people know about their history.  Thanks to Betty's drive and determination the Welsh education system has it written into law that multiculturalism is taught in all schools, ensuring that the diverse pupil population learn about history from multiple angles and perspectives.

In tribute to this formidable lady, a statue to commemorate her and her achievements was unveiled this week in Cardiff.

Mrs J Rigby - Headteacher

This week pupils have started to engage in a range of activities in relation to Black History Month. Pupils have been invited to view our new display, and have participated in drumming, music and cooking sessions.  Also this week pupils will have an opportunity to attend reading sessions and a group discussing LGBTQ+.

Thank you to all staff and pupils for their engagement and support, and I look forward to the rest of this month!  Look out for more updates !
