Careers Department Mission Statement

At MHS we do more than just help our students gain qualifications. We are preparing them for independence and all that it entails. We are committed to raising standards of attainment and providing students with the skills needed to progress successfully into further education, employment, and adult life. 

We want our pupils to be able to fulfill their potential and prepare for life after Meadow. This includes delivering a breadth of opportunities and experiences that our pupils can start to build their own future pathways on. As we aim to do this, we are also fully aware of the impact the difficulties our pupils have due to the nature of their needs and we look to how we can start to overcome these barriers, working alongside our pupils and their families.

INTENT:

What will our pupils experience throughout their careers curriculum at Meadow?

● Access to work related learning from Year 7 onwards - learning that is linked through their curriculum provision and also explicitly delivered sessions i.e through DWP

● Engagement with different employers and providers in a variety of formats such as assemblies, visits, talks, project work, careers events, Employers’ Evenings, Enterprise Days, Vocational Pathways, Work Experience, Supported Internship

● Impartial careers advice and support from a careers advisor

● Staff who are committed to and passionate about helping our pupils develop as they make key decisions and prepare for their future pathways

● Support in working with pupils and their families as they prepare for their future and for life after Meadow to consider work as a life goal

Why do we want this?

● We want our pupils to know their skills and strengths; know what they are good at, what they find hard and how they can managed their difficulties 

● We want our pupils to work towards independent living and/or working

● We want them to have hope and optimism, sense of purpose, adaptability and resilience

● We want our pupils to have access to, and engagement in, decent work - voluntary or paid

● We want our pupils to learn and make progress so they can thrive and experience success in their future pathways

● We want our pupils to pursue and value their own wellbeing and happiness 

● We want our pupils to be fully informed about different career pathways 

IMPLEMENTATION:

How will we deliver this?

● Pupils’ access to a careers curriculum from Year 7 onward which will be regularly monitored and evaluated to ensure it is fit for purpose.

● Experiences of different workplaces and environments, with support from our Job Coaches

● Meaningful encounters with employers and educational providers including, as it deems appropriate, a minimum of two encounters with providers of technical education in each Key Stage. 

● Enterprise and Careers Days

● Embedding the careers within the curriculum

● Supported Internship and work experience opportunities

IMPACT:

What is our expected impact?

● A whole school approach ensures that careers is considered an important aspect throughout life at MHS for pupils in preparation for adulthood.

● Pupils will have a successful transition on from Year 11 into Post 16 and beyond school

● Pupils will have had experience of a wide range of opportunities, interests, and options so they are best placed to make informed decisions about their future choices

● Pupils will develop the skills needed for them to be more independent and employable, whether that is voluntarily or paid

● Pupils will know the value of having work and commitments in their lives

● Pupils will know that they have a valued and important part to play in the world in which they live and they can and are motivated to contribute to society in a way which best suits their interests, skills and needs.

● Pupils will know about and make use of the range of support and advice that is available to them in order to support their choices and decision making as they progress on from Meadow

● Pupils will have an increased sense of confidence, having experience of work related/independence tasks both internally and externally.

● Pupils and families will understand that work, not just college, is an option post Meadow 

● Pupils’ and their families’ aspirations and expectations regarding employment will raise
