Issue 12 - Friday 28 November 2025

Dear Parents and Carers

It was an honour to attend my first Meadow High School Awards Evening last week.  It was great to see the former students returning to Meadow High School to receive their certificates and other accreditations and to see how they are getting on now they have left us.  It was also a pleasure to see current students receiving their certificates they achieved last academic year.  This will surely give them a boost as they move through their current studies.  I spoke to the students about the ‘positive power of failure’ and you can see my talk on the website by following the link below.

This week we have had another key event in school with Governors holding their annual strategic day.  This is an important day when Governors plan for the 3 - 5 years ahead and how they will work alongside me and all the staff in achieving it.  They also take the opportunity to wander around the school and meet students and staff to ascertain their views.  This is even more important this year as we are planning for our move to ‘One School, Two Sites’ from September 2026.

Part of our preparation for this move and also in response to parent feedback in the surveys conducted in half-term 1 is to review our Mission Statement, Vision and Values.  We are currently doing this in school at the moment and I will be writing to you separately to outline how you can contribute too (see letter home and article in this bulletin).

Away from School Improvement can I also remind you of the importance of attendance as a contributor to achievement.  Attendance above 95% is closely linked to achieving positive outcomes in the courses you are taking at school.  In Key Stage 3, it also ensures that you lay strong foundations on which to build as you move from school.  Parents play a key role in this by ensuring students are up and ready for school and arrive on time.  Talking positively about school and the school day at home is also a good way of boosting strong attendance.

I wish you all an enjoyable week ahead.

Celebration of Achievement Evening

Pupils, their families, Governors and staff attended our Annual Celebration of Achievement Evening last Thursday, 20 November 2025.

Pupils received their exam awards and certificates, which were presented by
Past Mayor, Councillor Shehryar Ahmad-Wallana.   It was a lovely evening and great to see past pupils returning as well as current pupils, to receive their awards.

Head Pupils Vinaay, Amiya, Sam and Diego made a speech and a Vote of Thanks.  They thanked everyone for coming to the evening.

The Headteacher, Mr Cunningham and Chair of Governors, Mr Burton, also spoke during the evening.  You can hear Mr Cunningham's speech in the video link included in his letter above.

During the evening, we also held a charity raffle.   Thank you for all the donations of prizes.   We also auctioned off some of the flowers, which had kindly been donated by Simply Flowers and Funky Flowers.   We raised over £220.00, which will be split between MNDA (Motor Neurone Disability Association) and Friends of Meadow.    Thank you everyone for your generous support.

Thank you to all the staff, governors, parents and families, and the pupils for making this a special evening.

Meadow Mission and Values

Dear Parents and Carers

As I am sure you are aware, Meadow High School will be operating across two sites from September 2026.  Part of our work to get ready for this is to review our Mission Statement, Vision Statement and our Values and strap line.

A lot of work has been done on this since September and some of you have already contributed by completing the survey you were sent before half-term or by attending the parent coffee mornings.  I am, however, still keen to hear your voice.

Attached to this letter are some slides of a proposed Mission Statement, Vision Statement and Value page.  I would be very interested in your feedback on this and also your views on whether we should retain the ‘Life Beyond Meadow’ strap line.  If you wish to provide feedback, please send it to the following email address:

meadow@meadowhighschool.org

Please mark it for the attention of Michaela Manning and title your email ‘Meadow Mission & Values’.

The deadline for feedback is Monday 8th December at 9am.

Many thanks in advance

Graham Cunningham
Headteacher

Oscar Eats Christmas by Lou Carter & Nikki Dyson

read by Mrs. Bullen

It's Christmas Eve and Oscar the Unicorn is hungry.
He's eaten the Christmas tree, the stockings and is about to make a start on the presents. But at least he hasn't eaten the magic reindeer food that allows the reindeer to fly . . . has he?! Oh. He has.  All of it.

How is Santa going to deliver presents to the rest of fairyland with his trusty reindeer unable to fly?

The Boy Who Slept Through Christmas

read by Mrs. Tudor

Leo LOVES Christmas.  And this Christmas needs to be absolutely perfect, because it’s the first one without Mum. Only it all keeps going wrong!  Home Alone meets  A Christmas Carol, this story touches ever so gently on childhood grief but is wrapped up in a chaotic and heart-warming adventure. You can also scan the QR codes to enjoy songs by Matt to go with the story.

Scholastic Book Fair – Thank you so much for your kind support!

This week was a busy week in the library as we hosted a Scholastic Book Fair pop-up book shop on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

The event was very well attended and we would like to say a huge thank you to the parents/carers who kindly found time to come and support. We hope that you enjoyed the opportunity to visit our library, meet other parents and do some shopping with your child too.

I would also like to say a special thank you to Miss Gaafar for coming in from maternity leave to provide the technical support needed and Mrs. Kennedy and our Reading Champions for doing such a fantastic job decorating the library – it looked amazing!

If you are unable to attend but would like to support our school by purchasing books, please visit https://clubs.scholastic.co.uk/C-67234RGY to order online. For every £1 you spend, our school will earn 20p in Scholastic Rewards. Please place your order online by December 13th, 2025.

Pathway 1 and Pathway 2
KS4 Pupils Dragon Project

& Our MHS Dragons

{item_alt_tag}

Key Stage 4 pupils have been very busy over the last few weeks.  They have been finding out about dragons, enjoying dragon poems, being creative, making dragons and building skills comparing using our school dragons, George [the reading dragon] and Lex [our EAL dragon]. We are so proud of the students and the fantastic work they have produced.

{item_alt_tag}
{item_alt_tag}

Not content with all this hard work, Pathway 1 KS4 students offered to help with a really important job we needed to be done.  Our EAL dragon, Lex, needed help. His scales are covered in over 50 flags which represent the countries our school community has links with.  We needed people who know about flags and can colour really carefully – thank goodness for our fabulous students!

{item_alt_tag}
{item_alt_tag}

Mrs Majidi and I were amazed by our students’ knowledge of flags of the world and how brilliantly they worked as part of a team, sharing so nicely. You are all superstars, and we are very grateful for your help!

{item_alt_tag}

Lex is now looking so much better.  Over the next few weeks, we will be asking students from across the school to help us complete the job.  If your child loves flags of the world and would like to help, please let their Form Tutor know, and we will try our best to make sure they are involved in the project.
