Dear Parents and Carers
Another busy week at Meadow High School with the students starting their afternoon enrichment programmes for this term as well as beginning their events to mark Black History Month.
Over the course of this month we will be recognising famous people from different ethnicities who have made a positive impact on society during their lives. We will also be focussing on Black History Month in assemblies, and we will be having some themed days in the canteen to celebrate the different cultures in our own community. This month is also the celebration of Diwali. This takes place on 20th October and students and staff who are of the Hindu or Sikh faith are entitled to request a day off school for religious observance.
This month we will also be gearing up towards Halloween and the school You Tube channel has two books that I would encourage students and parents to explore further. These are ‘Winnie the Witch’ and ‘Goosebumps’. The You Tube channel has a chapter of each being read by a member of staff to introduce the text, and then it is over to you.
Can I please take this opportunity to ask parents to complete the parent survey that you have been emailed. The closing date is Monday 13th October at 4pm. We are currently looking at our school values and aims and your voice is a key part of it. I will share the headlines via the bulletin and also at the parent information evenings I am having in October. Please sign up if you wish to attend these. The dates of these and the link to the survey are below:
- Wednesday 15th October 2pm
- Tuesday 21st October 11.30am
- Thursday 23rd October 9am
I wish you all an enjoyable week ahead.

Black History Month
At Meadow we will be celebrating Black History Month throughout October and we will be concentrating particularly on Black British History.
In Reading Intervention lessons and assemblies, we will be learning about
enslavement and the reasons why we celebrate Black History Month. We will be reading and performing poetry by Benjamin Zephaniah and creating and presenting our own research about our chosen Black British influential person.
In PSCHE we will be learning about each other and discussing our differences and how we should celebrate them.

Show Racism The Red Card
Wear Red Day
|
|
Dear Parents/Carers,
On Friday 17th October 2025, our school will be taking part in an event organised by Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC), called Wear Red Day.
On the day, pupils and staff are encouraged to wear something red to show support for anti-racism and help challenge racism in society. This could be a full red outfit or something simple like red socks or a red accessory. Please remember: no hoodies allowed.
In the lead-up to Wear Red Day, pupils will be learning about the charity, the history behind the campaign, and how they can help challenge and dismantle racism.
To take part, we kindly ask for a 50p donation, which can be paid:
- In cash on the day handed in to the class team / reception, or
- Via Parent Pay
SRtRC is the UK’s largest anti-racism educational charity. You can find more information about the organisation at www.theredcard.org.
Thank you for your continued support.
Yours sincerely,
M. Newman & C. Sojka

Wrap Up London
Getting your winter wardrobe ready? Does your warm coat need a new home? Have your kids grown out of their winter coat?
After half-term, I will be collecting warm coats to donate to Wrap up London.
If you would like to donate, please drop your coat to school
(drop off point to be confirmed).
Between 3rd -7th November
WrapUp London is our annual winter coat campaign. Every November, thousands of Londoners give their time to donate, sort and distribute coats to help people in need keep warm over the winter.
In 2024, WrapUp London saw over 15,000 warm coats collected. Among their beneficiaries were over 90 front line charities, including homelessness organisations, women’s refuges, and family centres. Now entering its 15th year, WrapUp London has become one of the largest winter volunteering events in the city: a celebration of what can be achieved when people combine their collective efforts to do good.
The number of those living in crisis in the city is rising, and the winter months are often the most challenging for people already enduring homelessness and poverty.
A person’s spare coat and another’s spare time can not only help keep a person warm, it can keep them alive.
Let’s spread some Meadow High school warmth around London this Winter
Keri
