Issue 6 - Friday 11 October 2024

Dear Families,

Our Enrichment Groups started last week, and it's fantastic to see the range of activities pupils are participating in.  Enrichment is a time where pupils can try out things that can lead to ongoing hobbies and interests in a pupil's Life Beyond Meadow, and we have dedicated an afternoon a week to this important life skill.

Here are the groups that are currently running:

Horticulture; Mindfulness; Cross Stitch; Arts -Sculpting; Music; Fitness;
Environment; Arts - The Seasons; Social Games; Park Walks; Reading Club; Media Club; Culture Studies; Working on Canvas; Dungeon and Dragons; Cooking for Pleasure; Community at School Publication; Dance; Arts and Crafts; 'Pop Art'; Mosaics; Board Games; Chess Club; Nature Studies; Gardening!

Pupils take part for a term and then choose a new option for the next term. Sometimes pupils choose things they find out they don't like, and that's OK! It's just as important to know what you don't like as what you do like.
As well as the activity itself, enrichment is a time where pupils mix with those outside their tutor group, develop new friendships and practice their social communication skills. They also meet staff from across the school who they may not have worked with before.    Look out for photos on Instagram!

Assembly

This week we focused on a special day that is coming up on the 17th October.

Pupils learned about what the basic needs for living are and how those who can't access these basic needs are disadvantaged. We looked at some of the causes of poverty and at how much of the world population is currently living below the poverty line. If you are interested, here is a link we looked at that shows real-time numbers of people living in poverty or extreme poverty. It's a worryingly huge amount! https://worldpoverty.io/

We reflected on what the UN Convention for the Rights of the Child says and found these two extremely relevant rights.

We talked about what we as individuals can do to help reduce poverty and pupils came up with a huge range of sensible suggestions. Finally, I set pupils a challenge to help decrease poverty by not wasting anything. Here were some of the suggestions:
  1. Don't waste electricity. If you aren't using it, turn it off. If you are the last to leave a room, turn the lights off. If you are cold, put on a jumper instead of turning up the heating.

  2. Don't waste water. Turn off the tap while brushing teeth. Have shorter showers. Collect 'grey' water to water the garden.

  3. Don't waste food. Have a smaller portion and eat it all. Help use up food that's in the fridge before asking to buy something else.
World Mental Health Day

Yesterday was World Mental Health Day and we as a school participated in the Young Minds awareness and support campaign. Pupils and staff were invited to wear yellow to show their support and to let young people know they are not alone, and we think that how they feel matters.

If you are worried about your child's mental health, please seek advice and guidance from your doctor and know that we are here to support you.

Next Friday, 18 October is
Wear Red Day
Show Racism the Red Card

On Friday 18th October 2024, as a school, we are going to take part in an event organised by Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC), called “Wear Red Day”.

SRtRC is the UK’s largest anti-racism educational charity, and you can find out some more information about the organisation at https://www.theredcard.org

At school, pupils and staff are being asked to wear something red in support of being a proud anti-racist, in order to dismantle racism in society. It can be wearing lots of red clothes, or as simple as wearing red socks.

Resources Request - Can You Help ?

Dear Parents / Carers

We are reaching out to parents / carers to ask if you can assist in our search for resources.

Recently, the school managed to acquire some funding to convert two of our rooms into a catering kitchen and a café, with the intention of running a ‘walk-in café’ that will be open to the public, which students will run and maintain, alongside support from staff.

Unfortunately, the funding did not cover furniture, so we are looking for local businesses to donate furniture that can be ‘upcycled’ by our students for use in the café. We are looking for very eclectic styles, shapes, colours etc. as we don’t want to be seen as ‘corporate’.

If you work for, or know of any companies that may have any of these items that are no longer in use and may be suitable for our project that could be donated, we would be incredibly grateful for your support. We are able to collect any donations using our school minibuses.

The kind of things we are looking for:

  • Tables (to seat max 4)
  • Chairs
  • Sofas (2 seaters)
  • Armchairs
  • Also, crockery/cutlery

This initiative is an incredible opportunity for our students to gain practical skills alongside their qualifications, significantly increasing their chances of securing sustainable employment. Additionally, the café will be made available to local community groups, such as care homes, at a reasonable price, providing our students with opportunities to engage with different sectors of the community.

If you are able to assist, or would like to discuss the project further, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at 01895 443310. Your support would make a tremendous difference to the success of this project and the future prospects of our students.

Thank you for your support.

Parentkind / Asda
Cashpot for Schools

Parentkind – the charity that supports school PTAs - have teamed up with Asda, who is making millions of pounds available to donate to schools across the UK through their ‘Cashpot for Schools’ initiative – all you have to do is, opt in through the Asda Rewards app, choose our school and shop and scan in store or shop online at Asda.com, between now and 30th November 2024

Asda will donate 0.5% of the value of your shop to our school. Also, every time somebody opts in, Asda will give an additional £1 to the school Cashpot. Plus, it doesn’t stop there – Asda are also giving £50 to every school to get them started.

The supermarket has joined forces with Joe Wicks to support the initiative – look out for the TV advert, radio ads and social media coverage.
