Meadow High School
Weekly Bulletin

Issue 22 -  Friday 27 February 2026

Dear parents and carers

Welcome back to the new term after what I hope was an enjoyable half-term break.  A short but busy half-term lies ahead of us, and we have already completed one week of it.

It was great to see so many of you at my Headteacher Coffee Morning this week and to discuss with you the work of the school, especially our Vision, Missions and Values that we will be launching in the Summer Term, our new website, feedback on our recent Peer Review and the progress of our new buildings and how we will engage with you as we move towards its completion.

This half-term also sees two significant cultural events that are celebrated by our staff and students.  During half-term we welcomed Lunary New Year.  This year is the year of the horse.  If you or your child were born in 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014, then this is your year.  Those born in this year are said to be brave, resilient and hard-working.  They are also associated with success and good fortune.

We will also be celebrating Eid during this half term, most probably on the 19th or 20th March.  I know some of our staff and students are engaged in the month of fasting leading up to this event and all students and staff who celebrate Eid are entitled to a day of absence for this important religious festival.

As always, at the start of the new term, can I remind parents about the need to ensure their child attends school on time every day?  We aspire for all students to achieve 95% attendance as this has a direct correlation with successful outcomes and next steps in education.  We will continue to celebrate and recognise great or improved attendance, and we will follow up with you by phone or in writing if we feel we could work with you to improve your child’s attendance.

Can I also request that you ensure your child is always adhering to the dress code, especially not wearing hoodies in school, and to ensure they have an outdoor coat, as we will always endeavour to get students out in the fresh air at break and lunch, even if it is raining.  I would also request your support in ensuring that you do not use the turning circle when dropping off or collecting your child and that you always use the crossings to get across Royal Lane.

I wish you all the best for the term ahead.

Mr G Cunningham
Headteacher

Parents Evening - Change of Date

Due to Ramadan, we are changing the date of Parents' Evening from 17 March
to Thursday 16 April 2026

Beware - Phone Thieves !

The police have alerted us to a spike in mobile phone thefts in the Royal Lane and Pield Heath Road area.

These are being carried by perpetrators on e-scooters who drive alongside
victims and simply snatch the phone.

Please tell students to ensure they keep their phones hidden in a pocket or bag whilst walking to and from school or waiting at public bus stops.

Curriculum link Humanities Faculty – Exploring Our Local History + Celebrating MHS 60th Anniversary

{item_alt_tag}
{item_alt_tag}

World Book Day and Careers Week is nearly here! As always, we use this as a fun way to promote core literacy and communication skills as well as build links with to life beyond school.  This year is the National Literacy Trust’s Year of Reading which makes this even more special. It is also worth remembering that World Book Day is celebrated in over 100 countries.

To support our students in building the skills and knowledge needed for life beyond Meadow, we are teaming up with the Humanities Faculty to focus on exploring our local history and celebrating Meadow High School’s 60th anniversary year.  We have a wide range of events planned to ensure that all students have an opportunity to gain knowledge of their local area and build awareness of the world of work including discussing their aspirations for the future. During the week students will

  • take part in a competition – Find the most interesting fact about your local area [ask parents/ carers to use their knowledge or research information] – Great prizes to be won!
  • take part in a range of job or history/geography related activities with some very special visitors from the world of work
  • visit our library to add to our local history VERY big book and pop by at lunchtime to hear staff reading some favourite stories [check out our YouTube channel, Meadow High School Hello, too!]

  • join in special assemblies and collect the World Book Day book they have chosen
  • take part in a non-uniform day on Thursday 5th March – the theme this year is Reading for Pleasure so come dressed as a favourite character from a story or for a job they are interested in. AND a special event is happening on Friday – weather permitting [so keep your fingers crossed for us!]

Meadow High School Hello Youtube Channel
– Lots of Stories to enjoy!

Extended Learning:  Engaging with a range of stories provides lots of learning opportunities.  Please remember that we have our own youtube channel where you’ll find a wide of stories to enjoy. Listening to stories can help boost reading and language skills;

  • spark your imagination and stimulate curiosity
  • help your brain, social skills and communication skills develop
  • help learn new words as you read. Subconsciously, you will absorb information on how to structure sentences and how to use words and other language features effectively
  • help with develop understanding of how to read, modelling pacing, proper intonation (using voice for expression) and correct pronunciation  whilst immersing children in stories
  • help develop comprehension skills – a crucial part of reading
  • help inspire a love of books and reading – a life-long learning tool

    We will be posting two new stories on Monday 2 March.

Dear England Lessons in Leadership
by Gareth Southgate

read by Mr. Cunningham

This is a great book to explore whether you are an football fan or not. I can’t explain better than Gareth,  ‘Many of us find ourselves called upon to be leaders at some point in our lives. Whatever meaning leadership has for you, I hope the stories I tell in these pages may resonate with your own experiences, and may even offer you some guidance.'  Have a listen to Mr. Cunningham reading and see what you learn.

The Gruffalo
by Julia Donaldson
read by Mrs. Monaghan

This is another one of our favourite stories here in school – we have been told that we needed to add it to our YouTube channel!  "A mouse took a stroll through the deep dark wood. A fox saw the mouse and the mouse looked good." Walk further into the deep dark wood, and discover what happens when the quick-thinking mouse comes face to face with an owl, a snake and a hungry gruffalo ...  Mrs. Monaghan will tell you all about it!

Year 12 & 13 Careers Fayre

Students from Year 12 and 13 visited Hewens College before half-term to attend a careers fayre. A range of colleges and companies were in attendance, speaking with students and providing valuable information about future pathways and opportunities after leaving Meadow High School. The event was a great success, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Many thanks to parents and staff who took pupils in Years 12 and 13 to the SEND Careers Fair at Hewens College on 12th February. Feedback from pupils and parents has been positive and many have come away with greater knowledge about next steps in terms of moving on from Meadow and how to access local youth clubs and be active members of the community. Any more feedback please email fbonnar@meadowhighschool.org
