Literacy Week 2017 - People Who Inspire Us

Monday 27 February 2017  - Friday 3 March 2017

To celebrate World Book Day on 2nd March we have held a week of events which have proved to be very successful, enjoyable and engaging for both staff and students.  The theme of this year's events has been "people who inspire us".

This week started with a visit from the London Ambulance Service who spent the morning with our students explaining what their jobs entail.  The students were invited to test
equipment and try on various medical attire which is carried on the Ambulance.

Tuesday proved to be just as enjoyable with a visit from the Police, who brought along their van for the students to sit in, test out the sirens, inspect riot shields and various other equipment kept on board.  They were invited to try on genuine uniform, hear how they communicate via walkie-talkie, their new body camera equipment, batons and handcuffs.  The students were fascinated and really enjoyed the morning.

On Wednesday, we had a visit from PAT Dogs, who gave a very informative talk to the students on how to care for animals.  They were given the opportunity to meet two of the dogs courtesy of Miss Bergin and Miss Sojka who kindly brought their beautiful, well behaved puppies into school.

In addition, we also had two very interesting talks on Aeronautics, from Mr Bergin and The Ministry Of Defence from Mr Gillman.

During lunchtime each day the students were invited to come to the Library to listen to talks from some of our staff who kindly gave up their time to talk about someone who inspires them, Students who attended were treated to juice and biscuits.

The culmination of the week saw our students dressed up as an inspirational character of their choice.  There was an array of amazing costumes, and goody bags for each class were given out in assembly.

World Book Day tokens of £1 were given out to each child.  These can be used against the purchase of any book.

Thank you to all the staff and parents for your continued support
and enthusiasm during these themed weeks.  It is hugely appreciated.  A big thank you to the contributors from The London Ambulance Service, The Met Police, Mr Gillman from the MOD and Mr Bergin, our Aeronautical Engineer.   Thank you also to the PAT dog puppies Max and Arlo for being so well behaved and wagging their tails all day.
