Thank you to everyone who took part in our Red Nose Day celebrations.

We raised a whooping £73.50!

We were given a tour when we arrived and commented on the beautiful craftsmanship of the buildings.

Afterwards, we all went to the shop next door to buy some Indian vegetarian snacks and devoured them. 

The children loved every minute of the trip and wanted to go back again another time. 

They were exemplary and a credit to Meadow High School.

The students and staff have enjoyed the bright and colourful decoration.

These sessions are designed to help students develop a better understanding of how to manage their finances as they prepare for life beyond school. So far, students have been learning about the basics of budgeting, including how to track income and spending, plan ahead, and make informed financial decisions.

Laura & Deborah informed our students how MND can affect people in their lives and thanked us for our fundraising and support this year.

Year 7 and year 10 went on a trip to St. John the Baptist Church in Hillingdon, where they learnt all about the features of a church. Both year groups asked and answered lots of interesting questions and enjoyed seeing a historical church for themselves to consolidate their learning.

Pupils were especially proud to make their own healthy sandwiches, learning first-hand about the importance of a balanced diet and making positive food choices. They approached this with enthusiasm and independence, and we are incredibly proud of their efforts.

You can support this learning at home by encouraging your child to eat a balanced diet, choose healthy snacks, drink plenty of water, and take part in regular physical activity such as walking, swimming, or playing outdoors. These small daily habits make a big difference to lifelong health and wellbeing.

This year we are also exploring other cultures and beliefs by decorating the library to celebrate the Chinese New Year [17.02.26 – 03.04.26].  Our students are really enjoying finding out all about this festival as well as the animal year they were born into.  This year it is the Year of the Horse, and for the first time in 60 years, it’s a Fire Horse year - the last one was in 1966, maybe a positive sign for the World Cup this year!

Kaytlin has won the Jack Petchey Award for being a great friend, working hard, helping others in lessons and being generous. 

Kaytlin has chosen to spend the funds on our School Prom 2026.

They were impressed with our warm and nurturing learning environment, especially our sensory spaces, our library and all the interventions offered to our young people.

In addition, a special mention to Jo, Josh and Sam, who represented the school amazingly and spoke so eloquently about their experiences at Meadow.

I am very proud to say we are the only school in the borough with this award and it really is a testament to how our staff work with and support our young people to help them regulate their behaviour and emotions, build key adult relationships and feel safe and secure at school.

We will be posting two new stories on Thursday 1^st January.  The stories this month are   

• £1OO for Friends of Meadow from the Christmas Bazaar.
• £183 for Motor Neurone Disease Association from the Bazaar and Meadows Got Talent.

Thank you so much to all the pupils, staff and families who supported and contributed to these events.

Another well done and thank you to Mrs Shukla’s Year 10 class and Miss Le Page’s Year 13 class, who produced some excellent melting snowman biscuits and Christmas pudding chocolate biscuits.

Finally, a huge thank you and well done to Mrs Shukla’s Year 9(GM) group, who baked over 100 cupcakes for the sale. An incredible team effort that helped make the Christmas Bazaar such a success! 

Elf on the Library Shelf

Each day Buddy the Elf arrives in the library with a new story and characters for our students to enjoy.   So far we have had:

• The Gingerbread Man, 3 Little Pigs, The Wizard of OZ,
  Jack and the Beanstalk, Thomas The Tank Engine,
  Cinderella, Snapper.

The students really enjoyed visiting each day to see what Buddy had brought them.

Feeling a bit sad at the thought of the library without its festive colours? 

Don't worry, we have a plan!  In January we will be picking up on the positive energy of the New Year.  There will be a box ready to collect all our wishes for 2026 for ourselves, our loved ones and the world beyond school. We will be sharing these as part of a big display to help us focus on the possibilities of the year ahead. We will be asking our Reading Champions for their help once more, decorating the library with the theme of the Chinese New Year - 2026 is the year of the horse, not just any year of the horse, but the Fire Horse.  So, lots to look forward to, see you all in January.

They have looked at skills needed front of house and back of house and really worked hard on their customer service skills.

On Wednesday 10^th December, they all worked together as an amazing team to run the Holly, Jolly café. They invited some staff and students and served them a variety of festive drinks and snacks.

A big thank-you to all our customers and well done to class HA who did a fantastic job!

Pupils received their exam awards and certificates, which were presented by
Past Mayor, Councillor Shehryar Ahmad-Wallana.   It was a lovely evening and great to see past pupils returning as well as current pupils, to receive their awards.   

Head Pupils Vinaay, Amiya, Sam and Diego made a speech and a Vote of Thanks.  They thanked everyone for coming to the evening.

The Headteacher, Mr Cunningham, and Chair of Governors, Mr Burton, also spoke during the evening.  You can hear Mr Cunningham's speech in the video link later in this post.

During the evening, we also held a charity raffle.   Thank you for all the donations of prizes.   We also auctioned off some of the flowers, which had kindly been donated by Simply Flowers and Funky Flowers.   We raised over £220.00, which will be split between MNDA (Motor Neurone Disability Association) and Friends of Meadow.    Thank you everyone for your generous support.

It was an honour to attend my first Meadow High School Awards Evening last week.  It was great to see the former students returning to Meadow High School to receive their certificates and other accreditations and to see how they are getting on now they have left us.  It was also a pleasure to see current students receiving their certificates they achieved last academic year.  This will surely give them a boost as they move through their current studies.  I spoke to the students about the ‘positive power of failure’ and you can see my talk on the website by following the link below.

We would like to say a huge thank you to the staff at Simply Flowers (South Ruislip) and Funky Flowers (West Drayton) for the donations of four beautiful floral arrangements which helped to make the evening really special. 

Key Stage 4 pupils have been very busy over the last few weeks.  They have been finding out about dragons, enjoying dragon poems, being creative, making dragons and building skills comparing using our school dragons, George [the reading dragon] and Lex [our EAL dragon]. We are so proud of the students and the fantastic work they have produced.

Not content with all this hard work, Pathway 1 KS4 students offered to help with a really important job we needed to be done.  Our EAL dragon, Lex, needed help. His scales are covered in over 50 flags which represent the countries our school community has links with.  We needed people who know about flags and can colour really carefully – thank goodness for our fabulous students! 

Mrs Majidi and I were amazed by our students’ knowledge of flags of the world and how brilliantly they worked as part of a team, sharing so nicely. You are all superstars, and we are very grateful for your help!

Lex is now looking so much better.  Over the next few weeks, we will be asking students from across the school to help us complete the job.  If your child loves flags of the world and would like to help, please let their Form Tutor know, and we will try our best to make sure they are involved in the project.

The Scholastic Book Fair pop-up book shop event is nearly here with the most recent book releases for children and young people.  The fabulous thing about this book fair is that when you buy books, our school receives free rewards that we use to buy more new resources for our students. These rewards are vital for our school because it allows us to continue developing our wonderful Library. Our Library is the heart of our school and supports all of our students to develop an understanding of themselves and a curiosity for the world around them.

We will be hosting two parent coffee afternoons on:

One session on Tuesday 25th November: 

• 1.45pm till 2.45pm

One session on Thursday 27th November:

• 1.45pm till 2.45pm

These will give you the opportunity to visit the Fair with your child and choose some of the fantastic books that will be on offer. You can pay at our parent coffee afternoons via card, Google Pay or Apple Pay using a QR code we will provide at the fair that you can access on your mobile phone. Please ensure you bring a mobile device with a camera so you can access the payment portal on the day.

If you would like to collect your child and take them home when you finish, please remember to complete the slip on the letter we sent out so we can ensure they will be ready. Please note that there is no on-site parking - if there is a particular need, please contact your child’s form tutor.

Can you help shape the future of our school?

Information about the role

Once elected or appointed for a term of four years, a parent governor takes on the role of a school governor, a public volunteer. All governors are equal, no category of governor is any more important or influential than any other. Parent governors exercise a strategic parental voice on the governing body.

I have included more details on the role of governors with this letter. Please read this as it is important to understand the role, expectations and commitment before applying.

What can you offer as a parent governor?

• Enthusiasm, time and commitment – to attend twice termly Full Governing Body (FGB) meetings and one or more sub-committes.
• Any professional or other skills you may have will be very helpful, with an openness to learning and change and wanting to make a difference.
• Your local knowledge will be valuable: you will have a feel for what is important to people.
• Governors also provide objectivity in debate and decision-making and can add further and different perspectives to school matters.

What are the benefits?

• Being a school governor is a privilege – you are a small but very important part in an educational system with a very long history.
• The knowledge that you have played a part in improving local children's education
• A chance to develop new skills, to practice and strengthen existing ones, such as chairing a committee meeting, researching or leading on a key school issue.
• The opportunity to work as part of a team to make a real difference in the community.
• The opportunity to meet new people from all walks of life whom you probably would not have otherwise encountered.
• Knowing that the decisions you collectively make will have a huge impact on children’s lives.
• You develop as a person and may even find that your experiences as a governor influence future career and life choices.

Please note: any potential candidates shall also have the opportunity to meet informally the Chair, Vice Chair and Clerk to the Governing Body to ask any questions they may have in relation to the nature and purpose of the role. If you are interested in volunteering, here’s what you should do …

1. Please check that you are eligible to stand as a parent governor. There are some criteria which can disqualify you from serving as any type of governor. This list is given in the nomination form. If you are applying, then you must confirm that you are not disqualified.

The definition of “parent” includes:

• all natural parents, whether they are married or not: and

• any person who, although not a natural parent, has parental responsibility for a child or young person; and
• “Parent” is defined as including “any individual who has or has had parental responsibility for, or cares or has cared for, a child or young person under the age of 18”. It includes a person who the child lives with and who looks after the child, irrespective of what their relationship is with the child. The reference in the definition must be to someone involved in the full-time care of the child on a settled basis.

There are some criteria which can disqualify you from serving as any type of governor.  This list is given in the nomination form.  If you are applying, then you must confirm that you are not disqualified by those criteria.

2. Please nominate yourself by completing the attached nomination form.
3. Please ensure that your completed nomination form is returned to the school by 13:00 on Tuesday 2 December 2025. There is a Nomination Box in the school Reception area for the collection of nominations. They can also be submitted by email to the clerk to the governors, rcarpenter@meadowhighschool.org
    

What happens after the nomination deadline has passed?

Nominations received after the deadline will not be accepted. If the school receives more nominations than the one vacancy, then we will hold an election and all parents will be asked to take part in a secret ballot to vote for the candidate they feel would be most suitable as a parent governor. The information you supply as part of your nomination will be circulated to parents to help them decide who to vote for. Your personal contact details will not be distributed. This is for governing body purposes only.

If the school receives one nomination for the one vacancy, then that nominee is deemed to be ‘elected unopposed’ and becomes a parent governor without the need for an election. If no parent nominates themselves by the deadline given above, then the vacancy is held open until a suitable nominee comes forward. If an election needs to take place, then I will inform all nominees personally, and all parents in writing, providing details of how to vote and the deadline for doing so. If there are any questions or you need further information, please let me know as soon as possible. The timescale for this process in November/December 2025 is as follows:

For the successful applicant (whether or not an election takes place), a term of office of four years shall commence from early 2026, with invitation to the next Governing Body on Monday 16 March 2026.
