Letter to Whole School - World Book Day Week

Dear Parents/Carers,

23rd February 2024

Re:  World Book Day Week of Activities:  Monday 4th – Friday 8th March 2024

Curriculum Link  – ‘Celebrating Careers Week

World Book Day is approaching and, as always, we are looking to use this as a fun way to promote core literacy skills and build links with the world beyond school.  World Book Day was created in 1995 by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Science and Cultural Organisation) on Shakespeare’s birthday, 23rd April.  It is now celebrated in over 100 countries around the world!

To support our students in building the skills and knowledge needed for life beyond Meadow, this year we are teaming up with the Vocational Faculty to celebrate careers week, ensuring that all students have an opportunity to build awareness of the world of work and discuss their aspirations for the future. During the week students will

  • take part in a competition to research information on a job that interests them
  • take part in a range of job related events including construction work linked to our new build and visiting ex-pupils discussing internship opportunities at the Marriott Hotel.
  • have fun building wider general knowledge through books coming to life in two giant Planetarium domes [teaming up with the Humanities and Technology Faculties].
  • visit our library to read the new world of work-themed books, visit the book fair to choose new books for their class reading corner AND hear staff sharing their favourite books at lunchtime.
  • join in a special assembly and collect their World Book Day voucher – (see below)
  • take part in a non-uniform day on Thursday 7th March – the theme is the world of work. Come dress as a favourite character from a story or in the clothes for a job they are interested in.

Staff will be joining in too, dressing for the job they would have done if they were not working in education – we have a cool quiz about past jobs we have had too!

We hope that the students all have a fantastic week!

Yours faithfully,

Mrs. Sugden                                   Mrs. Tudor                   Miss Gaafar                                  Miss Sojka

Letter to Class JR - Duke of Edinburgh Award - Bronze Expedition

February 2024

Dear Parents/Carers,

Pupils in Miss Robinson’s class have been working towards their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.  To achieve the full award pupils are required to undertake a 2 day, 1 night expedition.

On 4th-5th July 2024, it has been arranged for the class to complete the expedition at Rickmansworth Canoe Sports Trust, with two days undertaking water sports, including canoeing and paddle boarding.  Pupils will then ‘camp’ (in the classroom/field) on the Thursday night.  They will also be cooking their own food for dinner on the Thursday evening.

It is a great opportunity for pupils to undertake a new challenge and push themselves and we would love it if all pupils from the class can join us.  Familiar staff from school will support throughout the duration of the expedition. All pupils' needs will be discussed in advance with families to ensure everyone is supported and feeling confident to undertake the expedition.

Unfortunately, if the young people do not attend they won't achieve the full award. They will still receive their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award for the sections they have achieved in school, but will not achieve the full accreditation.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact fbonnar@meadowhighschool.org
Many thanks,

Faye Bonnar
Assistant Head Pathway 1

Letter to Pathway 1 - Pupil Email Account

January 2024

Dear Parents/Carers,

Some Pathway 1 classes are learning about the use of email.  To do this effectively, we would like each pupil to have their own school email address.  Some pupils have one from previous years learning and for some this is new.  This email account is not a private account; it is an account managed by the school, which means that staff at the school can check the accounts at any time.  This makes it a much safer account then other email accounts.  The school system also filters out and blocks most SPAM emails, but occasionally something might get through.  As it is a managed account, you can ask school for help with it if there are any problems.

We take pupil safety extremely seriously and will be supporting pupils in understanding e-safety rules and the rules about using this email account.  As a school, we have a legal duty to safeguard our pupils and it is important that you know that any illegal use noted may be reported to the police.  This would include things like serious bullying, threats and the sharing of illegal images. Less serious misuse will be dealt with by the school.

Please take time to read the rules that will be shared with your child when they first access their email account.   Please sign and return the form below.

If you have any questions about this, please let us know preferably via your child’s form tutor.  If they can’t help they will pass your question on to me.

Kind Regards

Faye Bonnar
Pathway 1 Assistant Head

NHS Letter to Year 9 - Your Health - A Brief Screening Questionnaire

January 2024

Dear Young Person,

Re: Your health – a brief screening questionnaire

The School Nursing Teams in Hillingdon work in partnership with children, young people and families as well as schools and the local authority to ensure that pupils are supported within their school community to remain healthy and receive the right support where it is needed.

As you are in Year 9 it is a good time to review your health through this brief questionnaire as recommended in the ‘Healthy Child Programme’ (Department of Health, 2009).

Each school in Hillingdon has a named School Nurse. The School Nurse runs a confidential service in schools. We can help where young people want advice or need to talk to someone about any worries relating to their health and well-being, as well as provide support and advice to parents/carers.

The questionnaire provides an opportunity to identify any new or on-going health needs you may have and require additional support with, and enable individual follow-up actions which may be required to support you in ensuring you remain healthy as possible.

This information will be kept safely in your School Health Record, and will not be shared with any third party. If information is to be shared will we always get your consent first unless we feel that you are in any danger or at risk of harm.

The questionnaire will take less than five minutes to complete.

Please complete the questionnaire even if you believe you have no health needs. The closing date for returned questionnaires will be Friday 26th January 2024.

Please press control+click on the below link to open and complete the questionnaire:

NHS Letter to Year 12 - Your Health - A Brief Screening Questionnaire

January 2024

Dear Young Person,

Re: Your health – a brief screening questionnaire

The School Nursing Teams in Hillingdon work in partnership with children, young people and families as well as schools and the local authority to ensure that pupils are supported within their school community to remain healthy and receive the right support where it is needed.

As you are in Year 12 it is a good time to review your health through this brief questionnaire as recommended in the ‘Healthy Child Programme’ (Department of Health, 2009).
