Issue 15 - 5 January 2018

Issue 15 - 5 January 2018

Welcome back after your Christmas break. I hope you all had a happy, safe and healthy holiday and are now looking forward to the lighter evenings and the promise of Spring!

As you know, I have now started my Headship at Meadow. Thank you to all of you who sent your good wishes and congratulations, it was very humbling to have such a lovely response.
Mr Macdonald has kindly agreed to come back for a couple of days each week to 'handover' and mentor me. I am delighted to be working with him and look forward to driving my vision forward and to building on his excellent stewardship of this amazing school.

One of my first jobs as a new Head is to recruit my replacement, and this is happening this half term. I am also working with the Procurement Team from the local authority to re-tender our MDT contract (a process that happens every three years to ensure value for money).  I will also be submitting a bid for additional capital funding to try to secure money to build a further block to replace the remaining temporary classrooms that are not part of our new build.

As we are currently in an Ofsted 'window' I am looking to maintain and develop our educational provision to secure the outcome the school deserves. This is an appropriate point for me to mention the Ofsted Parent View where you can comment on the school. (Link also on front of school website).  I hope that if you are happy with the provision for our pupils you might take a moment to comment on this as this is very helpful to Ofsted in forming their initial view of the school.

Finally, I would like to give you advanced warning of a joint 'Positive and Possible' day that I will be hosting for pupils, families and staff on the first training day in September 2018. I believe that this will be Monday 3rd September but will confirm this date with you as soon as possible. You will be invited to share any ideas you have that would be positive for you as an individual, for a group or for the school as a whole. From this event we will gather information for our development plan and ensure that as a community, we are working together to achieve the very best for our young people.

Mrs Rigby
Head Teacher, Meadow High School

To help you make contact with the most appropriate person to assist you when you call the school, our Reception Team will ask what your call is regarding. Please take a moment to inform the team member if this is a general inquiry, subject specific enquiry eg. Maths or a concern or complaint.

In most cases you will be directed to your child's Form Tutor. They will not always be immediately available but the receptionist will take a message, including the level of urgency, and will pass this on.

For subject specific issues this may be a Subject Teacher or Faculty Leader. Again, if they are not available a message will be passed to them.

Occasionally, you may be directed to the Assistant Head Teacher for your child's Team.

There is no Deputy Head Teacher at present and calls for Mrs Rigby (Head Teacher) will go to her PA.

Should you wish to email rather than leave a message our reception team will give you the
appropriate email address.

Free School Meals

Did you know……… just registering your child for Free School Meals means that the school is given extra money (under the Pupil Premium Scheme).   Please help us by registering for Free School Meals now to make sure we don’t miss out on vital funding.   Every penny counts !  If you need help with registering please contact Reception, who can make arrangements to help you.

Travel Training—Ealing Mencap

As mentioned in a previous Bulletin, Hillingdon Council have confirmed they will not be funding Travel Training through Ealing Mencap after 31st March 2018.

We are obviously very sad about this as many of our pupils have benefitted from this initiative, which has helped them to travel independently in the community.

Please find attached to the Bulletin a letter from Ealing Mencap which explains the matter in full and what will be happening with pupils currently being travel trained.

School Nurse

Our School Nurse, Alex Read, will be holding drop in sessions at Meadow  on the following dates to see any pupil who has a health concern, either physical or mental.

· Friday 12th January from 13:30 till finish

· Friday 26th January from 9:30 till 11:30

· Friday 23rd February from 9:30 till 11:30

· Friday 9th March from 9:30 till 11:30

· Friday 23rd March from 9:30 till 11:30

Pupils can refer themselves to see the School Nurse.  Sessions will last approximately 20 minutes.  Alex is happy to discuss any issue no matter how small.

Alex is happy to discuss with you any health issue or concern that you may have about your child via the telephone.  If you would like a call, please contact Berni (Mrs Gamble)  or Alison (Mrs Wallington) in Welfare, and they will notify Alex.

Shoebox Appeal

Unfortunately, we did not quite reach our target of 230 shoeboxes for the Jason Roberts Foundation in Grenada.

We will be continuing our appeal throughout this year, with a view to ship these out ready for next Christmas so that every child at the 3 Special Needs schools in Grenada will receive a present.

If you have any unwanted gifts, toys or stationary at home please think of bringing these in to add to our appeal.

Thank you to all who have donated so far.

News about the Weekly News Bulletin (you are reading now)

After Easter 2018 (NEXT TERM) the Weekly Bulletin is going paperless !

This means that we will not be automatically sending home paper copies of the Bulletin each week.

The Bulletin is already on the website each week under News/Weekly Bulletin.   It is also available on the website in a translatable format (using the Translate button at the top of the website).   The new website is accessible via mobile phone, tablet and computer.

We will ensure the Bulletin is on the website every Friday afternoon to keep you up to date with all the news, events and diary dates, just as we do now.

We hope that the vast majority of parents will find this a convenient and efficient way of receiving the Weekly Bulletin.  If you are unable to access a computer, tablet or mobile phone and still need a paper copy sent home, please contact Reception ensuring you let them know your child’s name and class.

Don’t forget there is lots of other useful information on the School Website.

Crisis Fundraising

At the end of last term, a number of fundraising activities took place including a Soup Kitchen run by Mrs Fabisch and the Sixth Form and “Wear A Christmas Jumper Day”.  We wanted to raise money for the charity Crisis a charity which helps homeless people.

Thank you to all the pupils, parents and staff  for participating and supporting this cause.

In addition to the funds raised by the activities, there were some very generous personal donations from a number of parents and staff.

We raised a whopping £500 !  Amazing !

You can find out more about the charity Crisis on their website

Training Course

We have been made aware of a course run by Hillingdon Adult Education which may be of interest to parents “Facilitating Resilience in Children And Young People.  The course is over five weeks from 19.1.18 to 23.2.18 from 9.30am -12.00 at Harlington Adult Learning Centre (telephone 01895 556252).  The course has no fee.

“The course will support learners to improve their confidence as a parent or carer and to learn new positive parenting strategies to increase young people’s and children’s resilience.  You will be enabled to engage with other parents and carers.  Further details are on the School Website (News/Upcoming Events and Courses).”
