Meadow High School

‘Achieving Together’

The inclusive policy of Meadow High School respects the varied and individualistic teaching strategies of the staff. The responsibility to implement the strategy is shared by us all whether teaching staff, teaching assistant or ancillary staff. No one should feel uncomfortable about re-enforcing good behaviour and employing corrective measures where necessary.  The school ethos is such that Meadow High School is a learning environment and pupils should be free from alarm, harassment or distress.

The policy complements our Parent, Pupil and School agreement (otherwise known as PACT) and the 6th form equivalent. There is a clearly defined staged approach to managing behaviours, which enables staff, pupils and parents to have a clear understanding of where the pupil is in the referral process. We recognise that a

strong behaviour policy rewards success as well as providing support for pupils experiencing short-term behavioural difficulties.

Meadow High School would wish to maintain an ethos that creates positive values. There are in society, generally agreed basic principles of moral behaviour, honesty, concern for others, regard for property and these are all virtues to be encouraged in children. Leading by example we will offer our pupils’ ways to improve,  modify and adapt to what we believe to be right, in light of the developing notions of citizenship.

Whenever a member of staff feels that the referral process should be enacted, the appropriate form should be used and the pupils referral record itself should record any action taken. This is vital information should it become necessary to involve outside agencies in the Pupil Support Programme. In order to establish a successful support programme all members of staff need to be involved: dissemination of relevant information will occur so that staff can respond appropriately within the framework.

The referral process starts with the class teacher and TA and should not be passed on until all strategies have been applied, when support within the structure will be forthcoming. Pupils can be fast tracked in serious situations and advice on this is given within. With the total commitment of staff, many day to day incidents that we face will not need to be referred but can be dealt with quickly and quietly.

The behaviour policy will be reviewed annually by the Assistant Head Teachers and the Deputy Head after consultation with staff.

Form Tutor Responsibilities

Form Tutors are expected to ensure that their pupils are correctly dressed, wearing only the appropriate jewellery and make-up and have all essential equipment.

Please make contact with the pupil’s parents / guardians if you have concerns in any area.

Please refer to the Home School Agreement (PACT), which outlines the standards pupils are expected to maintain.

NO rings / bracelets / hoop earrings / necklaces

NO gel or artificial nails/nail varnish

YES to a watch / an item relating to the pupils religion (appropriate to school wear)

NO white or coloured trainers / sweatshirts with logos / caps within school

YES to dark shoes or black trainers / black or grey skirt or trousers / white shirt / royal or navy jumper or sweatshirt

NO chewing gum around the school (class use @ discretion of staff as part of ‘Alert’)/ i-pods / electronic equipment

NO to mobile phones, if a phone is bought into school it must be switched off, left in reception and collected at the end of the school day.

There is a form on which you can record pupil’s problems in these areas for your reference.

General classroom expectations

As a general rule pupils should not be out of the classroom during lesson time.

Pupils should visit the toilets at break and lunchtime rather than during lessons. They should also be encouraged to wait until the end of a period before going to the toilet. Please be firm about this but use your discretion where appropriate.

There should be no chewing gum around the school at all although use as part of the ‘Alert@ programme is Permitted in class @ staff discretion. Please ask the pupil to place the chewing gum in the bin and send a referral to the Tutor if a pupil is using chewing gum out of class.

Pupils should remove outer coats / caps / non-school jumpers before the start of a lesson. If a pupil refuses then continue with the lesson and send a referral to the Tutor.

Pupils may drink water only from a clear plastic water bottle during lesson time. However if they abuse this privilege it may be withdrawn.

Pupils should not visit the water fountain between lessons as this makes them late. Please encourage them to drink at break and lunchtime instead.

Monitoring Behaviour

(Please refer to the five stages of managing behaviour sheet for more guidance and the behaviour support plan, which the tutor can use for further support)

In the first instance it is the class/subject teacher’s responsibility to monitor a pupil’s behaviour within their lesson. When this process begins the teacher MUST send a referral to the Form Tutor for information.

Please note that subject teachers are responsible for detentions relating to problems within their subject area, including punctuality.

Procedure for Detentions

Break detention in first instance, if not attended then go onto a Lunchtime detention.  If lunchtime detention is not attended then an after school detention will be given.  A phone call must be made home and 48 hours notice given to the parents to notify them of an after school detention. A form must then be filled in and given to the office to enable them to write a letter home to the parents confirming the details of the after school detention.

Form Tutors may decide to place a pupil on their report if they have had several referrals from members of staff in different areas. (It is from this stage on that the Pupil Referral Tracking sheet MUST be used).

Sometimes a Tutor may notice a pattern of behaviour within a particular subject. In this instance it would be appropriate to work with the subject teacher to find a solution to the problems before the pupil was put onto a report.

The reports consist of five progressive levels which will be colour coded.

  1. Form Tutor                 blue
  2. Assistant Head         yellow
  3. Deputy Head             pink
  4. Head                           orange

The person responsible for monitoring a pupil should write the pupils name and the date of commencement on the staff room notice board. Please remove a pupils name when you have finished the monitoring period.

Pupils should not stay on a reporting level for more than 2 weeks at which time there should be a review of their behaviour.

If there is no improvement in a pupil’s behaviour then they may be moved to the next reporting level after consultation with the appropriate person.

You must be able to show evidence of all the strategies you have employed up to this point and have the referral record completed and ready to hand on.

Where a pupil has previously been on a reporting level, this is the level they should immediately go back to if their behaviour deteriorates again (check the Tutor held records).

A record of any meetings/phone calls that take place should also be kept and filed with the Form Tutor.

If a pupil’s behaviour is of a more serious nature then they should be immediately referred to a member of staff further up the monitoring chain (see Pupil Referral Record sheet for guidance). The pupil will be dealt with at this level but will then be monitored at whichever level of the system they have reached.

All paperwork relating to a pupil should be given to the Form Tutor who must keep it in a tracking file that follows the pupil through the school (a file per class is quite acceptable with a plastic wallet per pupil).

Time out arrangements

This strategy should be instigated and monitored by the form tutor only if they believe that other strategies have been attempted. If a subject teacher feels that time out would be useful they should discuss this with the form tutor, teaching assistant for the class, Team Leader and Assistant Head.

The management of the time out arrangements needs to be carefully considered to support the individual needs of the pupils requiring Time Out.  This should be in conjunction with the AHT as pupils should not simply be put outside a classroom where they may disturb others.

The location that a pupil will go to during time out should be carefully considered. The time out can take place within the classroom where this is practical.

The length of the time out should be part of the agreement as pupils should not be missing whole lessons if this can be avoided.

Five stages of managing behaviour

The following table may be used for guidance, to aid a consistent approach in helping our pupils manage their behaviour.

  • Stage 1 (Class/subject level)
  • Excessive talking
  • Lack of effort/insufficient work
  • Forgotten ‘homework’
  • Swearing
  • Disrupting the lesson
  • Late arrival to lesson
  • Lack of equipment
  • Chewing gum out of class/refusing to remove if requested by staff during lesson
  • Stage 2 (Form Tutor level)
  • Unacceptable behaviour around school
  • Consistently out of lessons
  • Disruption of several classes
  • Consistent lack of equipment
  • Incorrect uniform/jewellery/artificial nails/nail varnish
  • Verbal abuse (name calling etc)
  • Late arrival to school
  • Continual lack of effort/insufficient work
  • Stage 3 (Assistant Head level)
  • Lack of improvement in any of the above
  • Physically aggressive behaviour
  • Stage 4 (Deputy Head level)
  • Pupils going off-site
  • Malicious damage to property
  • Smoking
  • More serious aggressive behaviour (resulting in an injury)
  • Sexual/racial bullying
  • Alcohol/drugs
  • Stage 5 (Head level)
  • Assault
  • Verbal / physical abuse of staff

 Intervention by the Head Teacher when appropriate

Further to the above table here are some suggestions of appropriate sanctions that staff can apply to aid a consistent approach to pupil’s behaviour.

Staff may want to apply other strategies as well. Please keep a record.

Strategies are not necessarily in an order as it may be necessary to jump ahead to strategies (rather than following them all) if a pupil’s behaviour is deteriorating rapidly.

It is good practice to involve parents as much as possible. If you feel parents need more support they may be referred to the Hillingdon Parent Partnership.

  • Stage 1 (Class/subject level)
  • Excessive talking ; moved to a different position / TA to work with pupil / given small tasks to occupy time / dialogue and set targets to improve problem / referral to Tutor
  • Lack of effort/insufficient work ; dialogue to discover if there is s simple problem / set small achievable targets / TA to work with pupil / lots of praise and rewards for small achievements

/ go through work at break time / referral to Tutor

  • Forgotten extended learning work ; help pupil with work at break time / contact home to see if it is ‘homework’ friendly / referral to Tutor
  • Swearing ; dialogue to explain inappropriateness of language / set targets for acceptable language / referral to Tutor
  • Disrupting the lesson ; find a position in the classroom that is less distracting for the pupil and others / dialogue about the effects of the pupils behaviour / targets for improved behaviour / TA to work with pupil / referral to Tutor
  • Late arrival to lesson ; dialogue to explain what the pupil is missing by arriving late / warning / break time detention / lunchtime detention / referral to Tutor
  • Lack of equipment ; dialogue to explain exactly what equipment is expected for the lesson / referral to Tutor
  • Chewing gum out of lesson; gum into the bin and dialogue to make sure the pupil is aware of the school rule about
  • chewing gum / break detention and referral to Tutor

  • Stage 2 (Form Tutor level)
  • Unacceptable behaviour around school ; target setting / monitoring period with frequent ‘checkups’ / break detention / phone call home / lunch detention / letter home

/ detention with HoY / meeting with parents / referral to AHT

  • Consistently out of lessons ; dialogue to ascertain if there is a specific problem / monitoring period / phone call home / removal from playground at break time / letter home / removal from playground at lunchtime / meeting with parents / referral to AHT
  • Disruption of several classes ; target setting and monitoring period / phone call home / letter home / meeting with parents / referral to AHT
  • Consistent lack of equipment ; warning / phone call home / monitoring period / letter home referring to PACT / meeting with parents / referral to AHT
  • Incorrect uniform/jewellery/nails etc ; warning / phone call home / letter home / meeting with parents / referral to AHT
  • Verbal abuse (name calling etc) ; dialogue about what is expected as good behaviour / monitoring period / phone call home / break detention / letter home / lunchtime detention / meeting with parents / referral; to AHT
  • Late arrival to school ; dialogue to explain the importance of punctuality / phone call home / letter home / referral to EWO
  • Continual lack of effort/insufficient work ; phone call home / dialogue and target setting / monitoring period / letter home / lunchtime catch-up work / meeting with parents / referral to AHT
  • Stage 3 (Assistant Head level)
  • Lack of improvement in any of the above
  • Physically aggressive behaviour
  • Stage 4 (Deputy Head level)
  • Pupils going off-site
  • Malicious damage to property
  • Smoking
  • More serious aggressive behaviour (resulting in an injury)
  • Sexual/racial bullying
  • Alcohol/drugs
  • Stage 5 (Head level)
  • Assault
  • Verbal / physical abuse of staff

Disruptive pupils during lesson time

As a general rule pupils should NOT be sent out of the classroom but their behaviour managed within the classroom environment.

If it is necessary to have a pupil removed from your class then staff should either press the Assistance Alarm if there is risk to the pupil or others or send a message asking for assistance. A member of staff will then come to your aid. A referral form regarding the pupil’s behaviour should be filled out by the class teacher ASAP (before the end of the same day).

If the situation is urgent or the pupil is threatening or dangerous:

  1. Activate the alarm for assistance (identified by the ! in each room)
  2. Remove other pupils from the area

If a pupil leaves your class send a note to notify member of SMT and complete a referral form by the end of the day.

After any of these situations a referral form should be completed and given to the Form Tutor.

Violent pupils

  • Pupils interviewed separately to gain clear picture of incident
  • Witnesses interviewed
  • *Where appropriate pupils bought together in a  situation mediated by a member of staff
  • Parents /carers contacted by phone to be informed of incident
  • If necessary parents/carers to collect violent pupil from school
  • Where appropriate an exclusion
  • Where appropriate contact Safer Schools Police Liaison Officer
  • Re-entry interview with pupil / parents/carers senior member of staff and nominated person to monitor pupil
  • If pupils have not previously met then a meeting arranged and mediated by a member of staff
  • Pupil closely monitored on reporting system

Where a positive handling has had to be used on a pupil, the staff member who initiated the restraint should inform form tutor, Deputy Headteacher and the office, where they will be asked to fill in a

Serious Incident Report Restraint form [please check if pupil has a PHP in place before completing restraint form].  If you require help with this form, please see any member of the SMT.

These forms must be completed and signed by the Headteacher within 24 hours of the incident.

All of the above need to be recorded and filed with the form tutor including exclusion letters.

Violent behaviour to other children or staff is not acceptable. Some children retaliate when provoked by other children. In most cases they regret their action and as soon as possible the two parties should meet and discuss how they feel. In all cases parents must be involved and usually violent pupils will be excluded following discussion with parents.

Where pre-mediated violence is judged to be an attack on another pupil then the parents/carers of both pupils must be informed by telephone followed by an external exclusion of the violent pupil. Senior staff and parents/carers then need to agree a re-entry to school, which may include a daily report or internal suspension.

Where there is pre-meditated violence against staff then parents/carers must be informed immediately and the child excluded for a fixed term, pending an internal investigation. The child will not return to school until a re-entry procedure has been agreed with close monitoring of conduct by a nominated member of staff and the parents/carers.

It is essential that children who commit acts of pre-meditated violence understand that this constitutes assault and is a serious civil offence. In the same way staff must be cautious when ‘handling’ children so that action is not interpreted as ‘assault’.

Continued non-compliance and violent aggressive behaviour will result in permanent exclusion (unless agreed changes can be managed).

Link book

Teachers are able to communicate with pupils’ homes via the LINK book and visa versa.

The pupil LINK book can be used to record positive events and there is a space for pupils to record their merits.

Tutors should check pupils LINK books at least once a week and if possible write a short comment.

Rewards

In general, the school is not expecting to use a reward based system, as the expectancy is towards reasonable behaviour and not disruptive, defiant or aggressive behaviour.

As with any behaviour system the use of rewards is equally as important as the use of sanctions.

Some of the rewards pupils can receive are:

  • Positive Notes
  • Reward trips at the end of year arranged by Form Tutors.
  • Pupil of the Term  - certificate and prize at the end of term assembly.
  • House Groups – non-uniform day every term for house with the most merits.
  • Merits:    50 – 100 – 150
  • Breakfast Bar Voucher

Assembly:
In the Celebration of Achievement assembly a ‘Most improved behaviour’ and ‘Pupil of the week’ certificate will be awarded. Pupils may also receive subject certificates

At the end of each term Form Tutors nominate a pupil of the term, who receive a certificate and prize, pupils can also receive various awards within the final Celebration of Achievement Assembly.

Other rewards will also be used to celebrate success and encourage improvement.

Merits

Pupils should usually receive one merit at a time for excellent work, improved behaviour, answering questions etc within the classroom.

In addition merits may also be given for:

  1. contributions to special school events
  2. subject specific awards given at the Celebration of Achievement Assembly
  3. subject specific awards given on a termly basis
  4. representing the school in a positive way whilst on a trip or with visitors )

Don’t forget, a word of praise can go a long way!

Review of behaviour policy

The behaviour policy will be reviewed annually. Staff teams will be consulted and the appropriate changes made by the management team.
