Jack Petchey Awards

The Jack Petchey Achievement Award Scheme aims to enable schools, colleges and youth organisations to recognise, reward and celebrate the achievements of their young people.  Jack Petchey wants young people to raise their aspirations, believe in themselves and make a contribution to their society.

Achievement Awards are designed to recognise a wide range of achievements. It is not just about being clever, or gifted, but about putting the effort in and doing your best. The scheme works well because young people themselves are involved in nominating and selecting the winners.

Meadow High School has participated in the scheme since 2006. Each academic year the Foundation enables us to recognise and reward 9 individual pupils for their personal accomplishments. Students and staff recommend pupils and our School Council then vote for who they think should win the award. It is seen as a great honour to be selected for the Jack Petchey Achievement Award and winners and their families are invited to a special Awards Ceremony at the Beck Theatre each year where they receive a medallion and meet the Mayor of Hillingdon and other VIP’s from around the borough. Winners are also given £200 to spend on things that they feel the school would benefit from. Pupils put ideas for this on a wish list and each winner selects something from the list. The wish list has a wide range of ideas on it – scooters, wet break games, DVDs, magazine subscriptions and whole school themed lunches are just a small selection of the many things we have been granted since joining the scheme.

The Jack Petchey Award Scheme also enables us as a school to recognise adults by awarding a Leader Award each year. The Leader Award has been designed for young people to thank and celebrate the adults who support them. It allows us to honour the dedication and commitment of staff and volunteers - particularly those who go 'the extra mile' to support our school. Leader Award winners are also invited to the celebration event at The Beck Theatre and offered the opportunity to apply for an additional small grant once a year.
